You know Rabid Fox had a intriging idea involving a jounal? Where he builds the room takes a pic of it from above and makes a list of what he used? Then write down the contents of the room. You could add on or take away as the dungeons gose on. I hope I got that right. I can't find the post he put it down in. :?

I believe you are speaking of the 5x5 graph paper hard-bound lab book I spoke of before.
Each square in the book counts as a 2x2 area of DF MM.
I use a color key for each piece instead of having to write down in words what each piece is.
I use a box of 72 Berol Prismacolor pencils in this endevour for two reasons:
*a goodly number of colours and shades to chose from to represent the growing variety of DF pieces available.
*that they are erasable to a decent degree in the event of a screw-up.
Now, if you had a bit more money to invest in this than I did at the time, you could buy the 120 pencil set from Berol.
Then, you would be really set as far as colours.
I do not use markers because they can bleed through the page and I do not use ball points because they make indentations in the lower pages.
Moderate pressure pencil use works wonderfully!!

I do write down on the graph page though the page number, in a separate photo album that I use for the pics I have taken of my layouts, where the pics of that layout are located.

Only one problem MLV, almost all pieces in DF are at least 10'x10'. Makes it impossible to do a room smaller than 20x20.

I often take pics of the setups I make up, then I use Corel to make the map of the pieces.

Thanks Rabid. I have one of those 120 Prismacolor pencil sets already that I use for detail on some miniatures that I paint. So you will take a picture of a particular setup then color code it?

I think he is meaning a 50' room. You know 10" on the board with the 5'X5' squares.....

Not quite.
Since the photos I take of the set-ups are usually film camera pics rather than digital, I use the book right at the set-up unless there is a real rush to leave where ever.
That way I have record of the set-up immediately and do not have to wait for the return of the developed film pics.
Usually, I am experimenting days before the game involved so putting the set-up in the book is done on my time at my ease.
The only rush times are if I come up with a new set-up at a con or the like; in those cases a lot of the time I have to rely on the pics after they are developed instead of being messy in the map book.

On page one & two of the lab book Whitewind, you set up a color code table for the pieces of Dwarven Forge Master Maze you own.
For example:
Fantasy 6x6 Floor = Yellow Ochre (942)
Fantasy 4x6 Floor = Hot Pink (993)
Fantasy 2x2 Floor = Non-Photo Blue (919)
and so on.
Be sure to put both the name of the colour and the colour's Berol Prismacolour code.
This way, if you are out-of-town and lose a pencil, you can easily replace it at the local art supply store where you are at as long as they sell single Prismacolor pencils, which most do, by using the Prismacolour code number.

Also, remember to choose fairly different colours for pieces you commonly put next to each other.
This will make your records a bit easier to read.

My photos I keep as "real" view records of the set-ups.
Sometimes, those who you are going to play with need some convincing that the set-up you have described to them is really as cool as you say it is.
The photos provide great back-up in such situations.

Additionally, for the diagonal and curved wall pieces & curved passage piece, I use a very sharp normal (#2) pencil to draw in the wall(s) and the facing of the piece.

I hope this is sensical to you Whitewind; under the gun here as far as time this evening.
Sorry.
Feel free to ask any more questions you might have.
Have a great day!

Thanks much RF, I am going to keep this in a file and try it out. Don't know when but am going to try it. I have asscess to a Dig Camara and usually take photos of the set up. It would be good to draw the faceing like you said of the pieces that are not obvious what direction they face. Where do you pic up a lab book like that?

I think I picked up my books a few years ago at a college/university bookstore, but try out Wal-Mart and all that crowd as well.
Sorry for not any more concrete data, but I have had mine for at least six years and cannot remember exactly where I picked it up.
Too many moves ago - sorry; if it was not the pay and the satisfaction of solving serious problems, I would have to say that troubleshooting really is for younger single persons - not older family men/women.
Thinking about it, any store that caters to the achitectural or general scientific trade (especially lab work - of course) should have them as well.

My digicam is an ancient 1.3Mp handmedown, and I do not care for the resolution unless I am shooting for a 3x5 pic or smaller.
It easier to shoot with film and either get the disc with the order or to scan them in later at home.
I would buy a newer digicam, but I am just waiting for my father-in-law to get bored with his latest one again, a 6 or 8Mp one, and just get that one.
He will probably be jumping up soon to one of those 12Mp ones I have seen an ad or two about.
Then again, it would be great if I was handed one of the ones from work to keep.
I do not know the Mp count, but it shoots crystal clear pics at up to a half mile range and pretty good out to a mile or so.
Dreaming is always fun as long as the reality is expected at the end.
I would not want to have to pay for one of those cams; they all look way too expensive for my pay cheque.

I can even try Office Depot. we have a 2.2 " fakes that it is a 3 MP camara somehow. I dose ok up to about 8X10 and great for the Desktop on the putter.... I have started to scan some older photos and your right they do just fine. You can scan them at any res you want. I even played around one time and scaned a photo of one of my kiddo's gameboy characters " Spiro, a dragon " I made the very small photo fill the screen " Real Sharp " but the file wound up being 50+ meg. LOL.

Yes the Z3. It's been awhile since I looked at them so I imagion it is old news by now. I like it cause of the 10X zoom with image stabilzer. there is a 4 MP and a 10 I think. 4 photos in a second it nice. Do they split up the MP during that kind of burst? or are they all that big. I guess you can shoot a photo that can be enlarged to poster size? Hey have you ever tried to take a HUGE photo of your DW stuff from over head that then have it printed out as 1" squares?

My wife is a big Steelers fan If you have any of their photos that would be great. Well if you were to laminate a DF set up you would be able to put markings on to erase later. LOL I don't know if it would be real usefull but I would love to try it. I am thinking this camara is in the.....Ohhhhh say.....2000$ range???

Oh, am I glad DLH that you are not my wife!?!
EXPENSIVE TASTES!!

Whitewind, I just looked up that camera of DLH's.
It is $5,000 to 8,000 for just the camera body!!!
WOWZA!!!
That does not count for any of the lenses!!
Then again, she wrote that she already had some lenses.

Blast DLH, what do you and/or your hubby do for a living?!?
It has got to be substantial for that much on a digicam.
Or are you a photographer?

whitewind, your wife is a Steeler fan in the land of Cowboys and Texans?!?
Is that not just a bit living on the dangerous side of things?
Or does she not broadcast that?
