How do I replicate the Chamber of Sorrow paint job 5 Months, 2 Weeks ago
So I got my tiles and love them. I really want to duplicate the paint job from the Chamber of Sorrows on at least 1 of my unpainted sets. Anyone know what brand paint and colors were used? Did you use glossy paint or a gloss varnish? It looks like a red base coat, with a black dry brush and then a dusting of gold?
Stefan if you could comment it would be much appreciated. My son and I are having fun so far with the tiles and building dungeons. Thanks so much for making these, now I can let my boy go wild and not worry that he'll break anything.

I second this...

I LOVE my CoS, but it is frustrating the hell out of me. You pretty much have to build the exact room that Stefan did. You can't add doors because then you take out a wall section and have no floor to replace it with. I know i can put walls inside the room and i have played with some of that, but in truth i just wish i had been smart enough to buy 2 sets!

I figure i will pick up some unpainted and make myself some extra floor sections. I think maybe one of the early paint videos Stefan talked about it, i'll have to go back and look.

multiple threads asking the same question - lets do it all in one place so that when Stefan has time to answer he doesn't have to repeat himself:

basically you must paint them red first....very red....then drybrush black over it many times till the black it dark and rich....then you will need to go with a wash of bright red, so it seeps into the cracks, maybe a few times....and then, again, a very careful black drybrush being very carefull not to get it into the cracks where the red is....in the end the black will be dull and it will look bad until you varnish it so that the black and red becomes glossy again...then it will look good:)

oh almost forgot, a little gold drybrush for the edges at the end as well...

It's actually pretty easy, just takes time...

Reaper Paints...

As for the high gloss finish.....all the glossy stuff I tried to use just wasn't glossy enough...so Lulu ran out to Duane reade and bought hairspray! the hairspray I used was Suave Max Bold and it worked great! careful it's flammable...not sure if i want to recommend it as I have no idea how long it will last...we were definitely thinking outside the box when we used it in desperation....it's still holding up great....but there has probably got to be something in the hobby industry which works good too, i just don't know what...i could ask the factory what they use but it's probably some chinese thing or factory made thing that you can't get here anyway...

I was able to paint my unpainted tiles to match the Chamber of Sorrows factory paint job - heres write it up:

Top 2 are factory painted, and the bottom 2 I painted.

Thanks Quor! That paint looks perfect. I tried using Americana brand glossy Lipstick Red and Satin Black, but it doesnt have that thick gloss to it that yours does. Will pick some this week.

Great work! The only other thing to match is the gold on the edges of the walls.

But your method is so simple, that even I can pull it off! I might use this on unpainted caverns if they don't officially offer a "Caverns of Sorrow"!

Quorthon13, did you do a glossy coat of sealer over the top, or does the glossies paint actually just match the shine of the original painted set?

That is just the paint - it is really nice and glossy - no sealer.

For the walls - I wasn't planning on doing any, I just wanted more CoS floor pieces... but for the walls - I don't have a paint that looks like an exact match, but I'll try to do one with DecoArt - Dazzling Metallics: Rich Espresso. It looks like with a dry brush it would be pretty close.
