Re:Straight passage Kickstarter Stretch Goal? 12 Months ago
Too many posts at once...

Jackattack's solution (not minotaur) is the following:

BioWizard, please reduce "Numberer of Expensive molds" on my set to 3 unless you are going to count the molds it would take to keep your tiles from breaking the 2x2 rule.

Sorry, no. Stefan's solution and mine do not call for designing smaller floor tiles. If you need a floor on the other side of a complete 2 tiles passage, you just do not use passage pieces in the first place and use normal pieces to start with... as here:

Also, I also stated that your proposed design (as jackattack's modular narrow passage) could be a single mold, there's no smaller than that!

Yes, this.

Thanks, BioWizard.

My solution doesn't require those tiles as is pictured here:

But if you wanted to fill in the gaps behind any & all of these tiles, you could with only 2 more molds.

jackattack, I get it now. Thanks. I see an issue with figure size, but other than that, I agree. It keeps within the 2x2.

I guess I don't see why if people can deal with the corner issue there, that they couldn't deal with the "gap" in my solution.

Seven more molds, by my count, if you make a u-turn with the passage and form a loop.

As for gaps, with squared-off walls you only get the gap at corners and intersections; with diagonal-edged walls, you get it at every spot in a passage. And you need extra fiddly bits to go behind/beside them, that can only be used behind/beside them.

This is the u-turn you describe, and I see what you mean.

And yes, Of course DF is opposed to Fiddly Bits...

One fiddly bit per piece, as opposed to three, or seven.

The diagonal half-tiles can be paired up to form extra floor tiles. The round half-tiles can be paired up to form a nice circular pit. So they are a bit more useful than they might seem at first blush.

The thing about designing modular pieces is that you need to play around with them, and put them in unlikely configurations to see how they perform (or don't) in various combinations and positions, and not just the ones that make sense right away.

Who puts a 2"x2" room inside a larger room? Someone who wants to create a(n awesome!) vault -- and now you consider making a tile with three walls in a "U" shape. (Which, BTW, would make a nice end cap for narrow passages.)

Who puts up a row of corner pieces on one side of a room? Someone who wants to create a cell block -- and suddenly you need narrow doors.

My hope is that DF will keep things as simple as possible, using as few pieces as possible, to create as few sets per line as possible. We like to joke about "the addiction", and talk big about buying whatever DF puts out in resin, but the fact is that the number of sets in each line is actually one of the barriers to attract new customers. It isn't just the cost per set that keeps some potential customers from buying, it's also the number of different sets they'd have to buy to complete a particular environment. If DF wants to appeal to a wider audience and bring Game Tiles to all gamers, they need to keep a wary eye on the number of pieces and the number of sets they produce in the Dwarvenite product lines.

Correct me if this is not where this thread stands at the moment:

The easiest solution is to trim the 2"x1" 'floor' off of two Wall tiles.

Then you can either glue those two wall tiles face to face to make a single passage set, or you can just leave the pieces apart for a little more versatility. For each Wall so modified, you'd have a 2"x1" Wall tile and a 2"x1" floor tile.

I am betting that Dwarvenite will cut very cleanly with a sharp exacto.

Probably. I really would like to not DESTROY my pieces to manipulate them to my needs, especially when I think that' we're on the verge of a solution...

For each of four pieces. So your passage solution requires eight molds. And you left off at least one -- bottom left also needs to be done with spurs on both ends.

The object is to have fewer pieces. The original standard passage design only had four pieces (five if you count an end cap) and needed three fiddly bits to compensate for passage walls. So this design is actually one piece in the hole at the outset.

Narrow passage. One piece. One mold. 2"x2". An end cap would be nice.

And by the way, I'm not actually insisting that my solution is the most desirable one. DF may be trying to eliminate the gaps that my suggestion admittedly includes. I just don't see turning modular terrain that's supposed to be easy to assemble into a puzzle, whether it's with diagonal wall edges or windmill pieces or whatever else.
