TOPIC: Tiles?
#49776
Tiles? 1 Year, 1 Month ago
I am assuming this will be modular.... Themed.... and the same size in terms of height as current DF?

By modular I mean different sizes width but same height or if different height then there will be height transitions?

Will there be a wider variety? Shapes? colors? themes?

I think we're dancing around the really important issue, here...

Are they more fireproof?

Now that you mention it, my Hellscape 2 set did melt with the heat of its own lava. Stray fireballs may char the floors.

TilesHate to throw a wet blanket on this on the eve of the Kickstarter, but isn't this concept of tiles already being done by others including one outfit doing them very cheaply

Df will make more variety and they will be of a higher quality and they will be compatible with all the stuff I've already got.

Re:Tiles? 1 Year ago
OK, now that the Kickstarter is released I can see that it is not "tiles" but actual DF, just in a cheaper material than resin and in Dungeon gray. I think it is a great idea to bring out a line that more people can afford. Personally though I have lots of room sets already so I don't know what I would do with another. I am having problems finding room for all of the DF I have now! I will probably back at a supporter level though just to show support for the project, but seeing how much it is funding in 1 day it looks like this should fund at a pretty high level.
I hope this doesn't mean that the classic resin lines won't be abandoned though.

Re:Tiles? 1 Year ago
As a longtime fan and collector of DF I will almost certainly be supporting this new Kickstarter initiative. However, I would have to admit to certain concerns.

1) Will the old resin pieces be going away? Do we need to "stock up" on what remains now, because new resin sets won't be produced?

2) Will the currently sold-out sets ever be reproduced? In resin? In the new "dwarvenite?"

3) In the video Stefan indicated that the new products will be considerably cheaper than the older sets. However, if you compare the current Room set with the proposed Hand Painted game tiles set, the difference is not all that impressive.

Resin Room Set: $109
(4) Swinging Doors
(12) 2" x 2" Floor pieces
(1) 2" x 2" Floor Pit piece
(13) Straight Wall pieces
(1) Straight Wall Secret Door piece
(10) Corner Wall pieces

Total pieces: 41
Number of different pieces: 6
Price per piece: $2.66

Hand Painted Game Tiles Set: $95 (though free US shipping also)

14x Straight Wall*
12x Floor*
6x Corner Wall*
2x Swinging Door

Total Pieces: 34
Number of different pieces: 4
Price per piece: $2.79

So in fact, the new Hand Painted set represents a price increase of ~13 cents a piece. It's also a far less impressive set, as it comes with fewer pieces and fewer distinct pieces.

Now, it may be possible that the price of the current Room Set is in fact unsustainable, and that may be the reason the new set compares so unfavorably at the moment. But even so, if the Game Tiles are meant to replace the old resin sets, I would have at the very least liked to have seen the variety of pieces preserved.

4) Kickstarter prices are often promotional, rewarding early adapters. Do the Kickstarter campaign reward levels represent promotional prices, or the expected standard price once the line is put into production?

Re:Tiles? 1 Year ago
Well, the Dungeon Tiles are more brick like instead of field-stone, so some might like a few sets just for the different pattering.

I *THINK* the stretch goals will add pieces at each pledge level at $120 and above. This could mean substantially more pieces per *set*, thus greatly lowering price per piece.

Also, I don't paint myself, but many people do and may be excited for the opportunity to custom paint their sets.
