Suggestions for new River/Lake features... 6 Years, 5 Months ago
I'm just getting into Dwarven Forge's Caverns, Rivers and Lakes and I'm loving it (DoE also...) Might pre-order some of the new Chasm sets - we'll se. Anyway, here are some suggestions for the rivers:

1) rapids, maybe even with a [real] level change involved. They could be part of a 6" chasm that is as tall as the stairs of a regular set.

2) a waterfall, perhaps with a height expansion, and a secret cave or stepping stones behind. Or make it expandable widthwise as well and make it flexible so there could be a cavemouth *or* the stepping stones.

3) a beach.

4) a stone quay designed to match to the regular dungeon stuff.

5) a waterspout or water elemental - done in blue resin similar to the flames from the DoE expansion.

6) flooded dungeon rooms. Some regular rooms and halls with water in them. Maybe a sloped floor leading into the flooded section. flooded out stairs.

Just some ideas.

Regards,

Howard

These are good ideas! But I especially like 4 and 6 (especially the sloped floor and flooded stairs). Those pieces alone would greatly expand the usefulness of the lake pieces with the dungeon pieces (though you've now triggered some ideas I'm going to need to find time to try out!)

Nice suggestions. I would be interested in all. But what I absolutely need to do the kind of lake/cavern setups that I want to do are - 1) more lake/river transition pieces - ie straight shore with one land corner and the other water; and 2) straight shore with two land corners opposite (not available in any set to date I don't think). Individual peice availability for the first (which I think are now found in the lake set) and production of the second (available individually or as part of a set) are a must IMO. The lake/river transitions of clear water with a bit of land on two corners (on the same side vice diagonal) would also be quite helpful. These are in one of the sets (forgot which) - but I need more!

Not really sure what you mean. Could you draw it for me from top view? I believe we have both those pieces already...

Oh i have some HA, bits left over and some Casting crafts, this sounds like a fun project for Break comming up.

Did you see crioux's in another thread? I have been thinking about doing this but with my "lava" tiles and his looked very nice, i will have to take an idea or two from him.

Ditto as to #1 and i think i got most everything to do this right now, i might have to do that this weekend.... after i finish the layout for the current contest (it is 80% done, realized i forgot a set at our gaming location... so when i grab it tonight i will add it and see what it looks like. )

Actually I stand corrected - you are right - there is a straight shore piece with two land corners. And there is a clear water piece with two land corners on one side. They are great pieces - very useful...but I need more! In combo with the diagonally opposed land and singe and triple I could design never ending sinewy water caverns...and then of course with the chasm set and future waterfall/rapids sets (and the cavern & cav passages sets) - my oh my - what awesomes (and highly complex) setups might be possible! This is my dream. But I can be patient and let you satisfy the sci-fi and/or outdoor/castle(?) adventure gamers for a few rounds of sets...(and I'd certainly be into the latter...)

Good to hear narrow passages might be making a reissue comback. I've come to appreciate their utility and artistry in setups (and I only have one at the moment - shame).

I'd like to see:

7) Deep water tiles (murkier than the current water ones to make truly massive lakes).

8) Dungeon walls (like cavern walls)

9) DOE walls

I like the beach idea. It might be three pieces -- left and right "end" of the beach, and straight sandy shoreline pieces to go between them.

Dungeon-stone match-ups would be nice as well. Quay, boat slip, maybe a couple of others.

I might like to see flooded passages. Let's start with (limit it to?) a single straight 6" passage with a water floor; a watery passage dead end; and 2" passages with stairs going down into the water, a ramp going down into the water, and a broken floor edge.

I can go either way on deep water tiles, but you would need a straight edge, an inside corner, and outside corner, and a solid piece.

I'm not sure how Aracon means Dungeon and DoE walls -- do you mean the walls joined to a water base?

All I REALLY want now is a waterfall -- it would make so much sense with the water sets and the chasm set, being able to make stacked water displays. Plus it would look REALLY cool.

I also think that it might make sense to list more water elements as single-pieces. More than anything else in the MM line, these are pieces whose uses are going to be highly individualized. I, for example, don't think I'll be making very many massive lakes, so I don't need as many open water pieces -- but I might find that, for example, I'm so in love with the lake/river transition pieces that I never have enough of them, or enough 1-corner pieces, or enough lake corners. Etc. Being able to customize how we collect our water elements would be very useful to most people, I think.

I'd still like some narrow cavernous passages, such a set could include some narrow cavernous passages with water, in order to link water caves?

Thoth, thanks for your input. Could you sketch out very simply on some graph paper (from the above view) what you mean? Which pieces you would like to have available individually or perhaps as a group pack, say 2/2/2 or 3/2/1 or 3/3 or in what combination that would make the most sense. If you can show me how making these pieces available would allow people to greatly improve their set-ups we (perhaps) would consider putting some combination together, same way we made the individual open water pieces available. You have to convince me, and others here, that it would be something worthwhile to many River and Lake owners, and so something that will sell 300 or so such packs...
