The Demon Arch from Wicked Additions doesn't always get a lot of respect, but I like it. It's very useful for dividing a large space into separate sections without denying characters easy access between those sections. It's a good marker for the beginning or end of a specific area in a dungeon, or a particular room that the adventurers should be looking (out) for. And it is a wonderful accent piece, a nice break from plain stone walls and wooden doors.

Maybe the "problem" with the piece is that it is all alone -- many of us have only one or two Demon Arches, and there are no other pieces that are similar to it.

So I'm going to lobby for more arches, perhaps even a Fantasy Arches set that would contain four to six different styles. These would be 2"x6" pieces (although that could probably be pared down to 2"x4") with a (decorative) arch sculpted into the wall.

First, I'd like to see a plain arch. Just a simple opening in the wall ringed with worked but (largely) unadorned stone.

Next, we get into big and fanciful carvings, like the demon face. Personally, I don't think we want too many mouths, so I looked at other things that might define the boundaries of a doorway.

An ourobos (spelling?) seems like a natural. That's the snake curled into a single circle, with its own tail in its mouth. Flatten that circle a bit to keep the horizontal oval shape of the opening. Paint it red or gold for a nice contrast to the green Demon Arch.

The jaws of a megalodon (giant shark) would be good as well. Not a shark-face, just the jaws -- wide open, teeth all around. Could be decorative, could be a show of strength by the residents, could be a big trap that will chew up the first person to step through. White with tan detailing.

An octopus' arms would make a good border for an arch. Put the body up top (kind of squashed down), two arms defining the arch, and other arms carved on the wall in bas relief. If the sculpt is "cheated" just a bit, the octopus can also pass for an illithid or cthulhoid creature. Octopi are brown, but I think illithids tend toward violet or blue-grey.

Horns also make a good border for an arch. Put the head (or skull) up top, and sweep the horns down and around. I favor something from the ram family, but exagerrated steer or antelope would work. Horns are often brown or black.

One of the first things I thought of for this was an owl -- the face (conveniently flat) at top center, with the wings on a downbeat to form the arch. Lots of color possibilities.

Returning to the mouth-as-entry format, I like the idea of a beholder. The main eye goes up top, the mouth is the opening of the arch, and the remaining eyestalks are carved in bas relief around the arch. Each eye might be a different gemstone, or each eye might be the source of a different magical ray targeted at different spots in a room where traps might be triggered.

Two trees could form an arch, two trunks rising up to meet foliage overhead.

Finally, a "heraldic" arch might mark the entrance to a Hall of Heroes, or somesuch. Place any combination of lions, horses, unicorns, boars, and/or knights on either side, rampant (standing on hind legs). Put a stone "banner" across the top, but if characters are included keep them indistinct so GMs can make up what they say.

That's nine possibilities for arches. What did I miss?

I believe the spelling is Ouroboros, the great serpent with its tail in its mouth, the world wyrm.

All of your suggestions sound excellent. Keep 'em coming!

I like the demon arch and almost always use it somewhere in my setups...but I always think of it as a "goblin" arch for some reason...

I always thought it looked like something from the book "MAZE" by Christopher Manson:

archives.obs-us.com/obs/german/books/holt/books/maze/rooms/18.html

In fact, I love the designs in that book so much, when I first saw MM (including the demon arch) I really dug it in part because it reminded me of them. The demon arch is always going to be one of my top-five favorite DF items, along with the mermaid fountain (which is the first one I ever owned).

I would love to see arches, they were the first accessories I made for DF with HA molds. I'd love to see official Stefan ones, though -- and my preference would be for traditional, dungeon, gothic arches along the lines of the red pillars. Some more fantastical, snake-like, octopus-like, etc. stuff would be neat here or there, but what I'd really love to see would be tons and tons of basic arches. They ARE very useful, you can delineate rooms without completely blocking LOS, you can cordon off an area and still make it part of the room.

Lots of great uses, I'd love to see 'em.

One easy way for DF to make a plain arch might be to simply make the Wide Attached Doors from the fantasy starter set without any door in them.
