The Graveyard of Mortheim (Dark Prophet VI) 3 Years, 3 Months ago
It was something very, very new and exciting for my group and me. I’ve been playing D&D since the first day the Third Edition hid the shelves. I’ve got myself a pretty neat set of Miniatures, Accessories and Dwarven Forge Dungeons. But I never, ever had anything for a surface adventure. And now, after 11 Years of deep, deep Dungeons, I wanted more. And so, for the last three month I bought a lot of stuff from all around the world. I build some things and painted a little bit over 250 different things. On top of that I gave my gaming group a complete new set of Character miniatures to illustrate the experience and better equipment they have now.

Now I still want more. I still want Dwarven Forge to make a Surface-Set. :)

But until then, here are some pictures from Sundays game night (for information about what is happening in the pictures I invite you to take a look at my new D&D Blog: darkprophetchronicles.blogspot.com/ ):

Thank you Harneloot! I think so too. I will post additional images from that game session but from a different setup in the next days. :)

good job with the hills! :)
the only thing that you can improve, it's the color of the grass in order to match exactly with the grass mat, but it's just a detail.

just for curiosity, how you made to play at D&D for years, without encouters on the surface?

Thank you HeroQuestFrance and Endar! :)

@HeroQuestFrance: The maps from Hotzmats are pretty good, which ones did you buy?

@Endar: The grass on the mat and on the hills does not match on purpose. Actually there are 4 different green tones on the hills, but the harsh flash of the cam has somehow killed most of them. I actually discussed this yesterday with one of my players, because the first two overview pictures are looking not half as cool as it did in real life. The tones go very kind of smooth into each other, but this is completely lost in the pictures.

Regarding you question:
I did not say we did not have any encounters on the surface. ;) There were some, but I never had anything really good to stage them. When Dwarven Forge is the "standard look" on the gaming table (an awesome thing so say, really :) ), everything less becomes...well, very much less.
When they were in a town I could build it with Dwarven Forge, but there was no grass or earth anywhere. This was no problem in big cities, but in little villages it was a little weird. And when they were in a forest or in a graveyard I also used Dwarven Forge tiles, but naturally they don't give you a good illusion of earth and grass, even without the walls. I tried different things but I was never satisfied, and so many adventures just had minimal encounters in the wildlife.
Right now I am still not completely satisfied (and I only will be if Dwarven Forge starts to make Surface Sets), but it looks good now. Not fantastic as Dwarven Forge, but good. :)

Wow! I really like your use of the ruins set in an outdoor setting!

A few questions if you don’t mind:

1 I like your Grendel Graveyard pieces but where did you get the other ones?
2 Would you care to elaborate upon how you made the raised terrain pieces?
3 Which pen did you use to draw the 1 inch grid upon your grass mat. I have always been afraid to mark my own but I see the effect looks very nice on yours?

Many thanks!
