Nice job, Ghenghis Ska!

I especially like the camera angle of shot #3 and the very cool "depth" in shot #5. Pretty cool stuff.

This is going to be a good contest!

Here, a band of orcs have stumbled upon a long abandoned temple. Inside, the orc leader discovers a book of pure evil. Calling upon rituals in the book, the head of these orcs soon finds that he can control the dead.
What other foul powers will the orc leader unlock in the study of the terrible book's symbols. And for how much longer will his followers be willing to pay the ultimate price for their leader's newfound abilities.

This setup uses every piece from the 3 Den of Evil sets. Although some of the pieces cannot be seen, as they are underneath other pieces.

Enjoy!

The hatred between the Foul Stone Orcs and the undead inhabitants of the Lost Temple has raged for ages. Now the time has come to determine once and for all who has the right to the temple and it's unique power. Perhaps in this struggle a brave band of adventurers could take advantage of this distraction to call upon the planar rift gates power or find a new use for the book of endless spells...The temple awaits.

Enjoy :)

OK -- my entry.

Here are a few words about what I was going for here:

I wanted to exploit the strange planar qualities of DoE, so you'll notice there are almost no doors here. In a few cases, there aren't even obvious "rooms" -- note how at the end everything sort of bleeds together, with all sorts of raised and lowered areas.

I also wanted a symmetry that was sort of upset in a few places -- one area features a regimented, orderly arrangement of small rooms, all squares and rectangles, and then there are all sorts of violations of the symmetry scattered throughout. And I also like to think that, from above, the layout is some arcane symbol of evil....

And at the very end, a mysteriously floating platform (supported by a corner passage, note how it is missing elsewhere in the display). I like that effect.

Overall, I have been blown away by the powerful entries in this contest, and I am not superpleased with my entry, I have to admit. But I am pleased with it. It was really fun to come up with a setup for my entire DoE collection, and I really liked the atmosphere of it.

Enjoy!

Zoonat -- I liked your use of the curved wall and the fire-pot in shot #5, but I really liked the shot of the triumphant orc in your layout in #3, That was pretty cool!

Aubrey -- Very nice layout and your capture of shadows were very "convincing". Shots #2 and #4 were my favs. Nicely done!

L -- I loved the depth of shot #2 and the "sanctuary" feel of shot #3. That shot #5 is my favorite though. You scored originality points with me there on that one!

Good luck to all!

Thanks for the nice comments Ghostmage.

Not only has it been fun coming up with a limited layout for this contest, but it's been great seeing all the setups as it really helps get the creative juices flowing!

The uploaded pictures did not show up in the order I selected them, so my commentary has been editted for each pic.

This is my take on the Den of Evil. I went without the accessories. The way I accessorized it initially was with DDM minis... I had about 14 Blood Vol Cultists in a U in the main temple, led by a Cultist, summoning a barbed devil through the Summoning Door, with a couple of "Lolth's Sting" minis (Drow) picking up rats from a Rat Swarm and putting them in the cauldrons, which had small fire elementals in them... but I digress. I liked that so much that replacing it with other stuff no longer felt right. So, envison your own accessories!

Pic 3 is the general layout. I particularly wanted to show that the temple end of the layout was not resting on the wall of the wooden box I built the layout in. The structure stands totally on its own, and I wanted to make sure this was obvious from the picture. I used the box because I could move it very easily after it was built... necessary when you have a 19 month old lurking about. The temple end is two levels, but its hard to tell from the first pic.

Pic 4 is the Test of Fire. Only the cleansed shall pass!

Pic 5 shows the Door of Summoning (that had a barbed devil coming through!). The altar is one of the DOE doors, on a pillar, with a curved corner piece on top. Like most of the setups in this contest, every piece of DOE was used in this setup.

Pic 2 is the best shot to show the two distinct levels. The lower level had all sorts of monter minis lurking... Ochre Jellies, Carrion Crawlers, lot of rats... etc

Pic 1 was taken from behind the altar with "The Book". It has a great view of the "Gem Wall" in the T section. I love that gem wall, and this layout with that angle I felt really showed it off. From this angle, just beside the "test of Fire", you can see the stairs down to the labyrinth below that contained all the critters.

I did take some pics with the DDM minis I had used initially that I could post after the contest is over if anyone actually wants to see what I was talking about.

L,

Your setup is in teh true sense a portal.... Nice I like it.

Shoesan,

Well I do not know what to say other than I would vote for your setup. I think it is one of the most original and unique setups.

Shadox... thanks for the kind words. This contest IS really cool! I still have not found a good D and D group since I moved here to South Carolina, yet I am about 6-7 months into owning Dwarven Forge (and countless dollars!), so it is cool I have something to do with the sets until I can actually game again.

My set up was made to be playable as a mini adventure. The room functionality is better understood if you see the DDM monsters and other minis in it (along with DF treasure!). I may post those pics after the contest is over. The entry way had a minotaur attack. Then the right room after the entryway had a grell/intellect devourer sneak attack with some treasure located temptingly by the door. The opposite room before you ascended the stairs toward the Test of Fire had much more significant treasure, guarded by a spectre. With three rooms of creatures possibly beaten by PCs, at that point the DOE clerics would hope that the PCs would be satisfied with what was in the chests and leave. Ascending the stairs to the entryway to the Test of Fire had gargoyles and Earth Elementals (the wall kind) as final guardians. The Blood War Gargoyle minis look GREAT with the DOE! Once the party were to pass through those guardians and successfully cross the Test of Fire, they would arrive in the main temple, in the middle of a ritual being performed to summon in a barbed devil. Under the main temple were a good smattering of dungeon creatures that would be more than happy to deal with a few intruders providing the clerics were able to overcome the party and send them to the dungeons!

There were some really cool entries so far. Its kind of bittersweet though... I see all these cool designs and it just makes me want to game more! I really need to find a good gaming group!

Shoe,

I had the same issue when I moved back to the east coast from houston. I Did the following to get a group together and now I have on occasion to many. First of all I wrote out 2 or 3 games complete. Stats, treasure, even how the baddies would react. I then checked out meetup.com through wotc's website. I did not post but I looked and contacted others that posted. I then took several saturdays and hung out at a few of the local gamestores. Typically ones that are hosting DDM tourneys. What I found is that folks that play DDM around my age with small children are playing DDM skirmishes becuase they do not have the time to write up a game and/or have not played DND for 15 years. The ease of DDM skirmishes is that they can introduce their children into the game. I spoke with some folks and got some interest. Next I found a comfortable place to play and got the players together just to roll up characters. The new 3.5 system can be confusing but it gives the players flexability in what they want. I would suggest letting them play any off the wall thing they want the first time back. We got together and I showed off my DDM and DF along with my MBA stuff and they were like WOW!!! No riddles or puzzles just old fashion dungeon crawl with mindless combat. It worked. I now have 9 regular players that we alternate games. (4 players, 5 players) and a few extras. Going to the local university and posting on BBs helps also. Rolling up Characters at a starbucks next to the local university snagged me one player. Anyway good luck. I know how frustrating it can be to get players. You could even take some pictures print them out and post them at your local game store and see if anyone bites. Your setup with DDM figures would look great printed off of an inkjet. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. The only problem is that there is no FLGS in this area. The closest is almost an hour away in Savanah GA and and an hour and a half away in Charleston SC. I tried posting at both stores with no calls. I do not think very many (or anybody!) people from here (Beaufort, SC) go to these stores. And for the locals of those cities, I think the distance is too much of an issue, especially given that they are probably already playing in local games. But I will find something eventually. I was mainly commenting that until eventually arrives, this contest gives me good reason to break out the DF and go to town!
