Miniatures 3 Years, 10 Months ago
The Dwarven Forge miniatures have always fascinated me. I thought they were the coolest miniature when I was younger. I remember them being sold at Wizards of the Coast, but not anymore.

Anyway I was wondering whether or not the orc swordsmen set, the orc archers set, and the entire Lizard men faction would be returning. I'd be interested in purchasing them along with the other orc faction sets. If I remember correctly I recall various warband sets being sold, but they seem to have disappeared. Let me know.

Well, I know you're looking for official word, but I can say that Stefan has said a lot over the years that the minis line is pretty much dead. They didn't sell that well, and it felt like a waste of resources, since lots of companies make prepainted minis, but nobody else does what DF does.

So, sadly, I think your best bet is to scour eBay. That's how I picked up another lizardman set last year. The orcs are even easier to get, there's usually a handful of them floating around. Lizardmen are harder....

Well that's upsetting. Have any recommendations on Ebay sellers?

Sorry, nope -- maybe someone else does? I would just go by feedback rankings and price. You shouldn't have to pay too much, esp. for the orc sets. Unfortunately, the lizardmen you can expect to pay a pretty penny for. They rarely show up, and there's typically a bidding war when they do.

L my only quibble with this is that i don't think there are lots of companies that make pre-painted minis...

I can think of 5 Comapines that are making Prepainted minis
Rackham - Sci-fi and fantasy
Wotc - Just dropped the SW line and are putting out 1 set of DDM this year, seems to be switching to pogs.
Reaper - Is still foundering with the LE line still has roughly 25 minis from March or Aug of 2007. I will give them 30 minis in almost 4 years that is about 7 minis a year, that's not a line its a sporadic trickle.
EM4 - The tiny line of Sci-fi and Fantasy that has not expanded, and has a number out of production.
Arcane Legions - Only the part of the line are painted, and 25mm

Mage Knight is dead and burried, Wizkids got some life under NEAC but the Hero clicks is all they are doing.

I can think of almost more companies that make the multi part plastic kits that are un painted than make painted minis.
GW, WgF, Perry, Mantic, Imortal and EM4. Then toss in Metal and I say we don't have lots of companies that make painted minis.

I would like to make more miniatures as I obviously have always been a fan of them, so I wouldn't say it's out of the realm of future possibility.....there has to be some special inspiration though, or theme to go with it...don't think we are going to re-release anything we have already done as the demand would probably not be enough to meet our minimum quantity factory requirements...

I suppose it's a question of what one considers "lots." I think that even five or six is a lot, although given the tons of companies that make other kinds of gaming products -- including unpainted metal minis - I can see how that number seems paltry by comparison.

Still, my point was that DF is really the ONLY company that makes prepainted modular terrain like this. And that is a very different thing from being one of five or six.

(also, to be clear, the decision to stop making minis, or at least suspend the idea indefinitely, was made by DF back when DDM was still dominant, and competing with them seemed foolish)

Not only does Dwarven Forge produce quality pre-painted modular terrain, but it also produces quality pre-painted miniatures, or at least used to.

The entire style of the miniatures is just fantastic: The detailed bases, the extremely well hand-painted figure, DF miniatures are absolutely ideal. They contrast beautifully with the DF terrain as well. The line should be expanded.

What inspired me to collect DF miniatures was the idea of collecting an army of pre-painted fantasy miniatures, at a reasonable price. Sure Games Workshop offers the army concept, but the prices are outrageous and they're not even painted! You have to buy the paints and the brushes just to use your horrible painting skills and ruin the $5 miniature you had to glue together. Rackham miniatures are pre-painted, however they're far too expensive and they look a ton less realistic compared to DF miniatures. Dungeons and Dragons are a pain. You can't exactly collect an army with them. Instead you have to waste your time digging through booster packs, just to not get what you were looking for. Unless of course you buy singles off the internet, but still you'll be paying more money for a less detailed figure.

With DF miniatures you can purchase sets of 3 miniatures with varying poses, rather than all the same pose. It creates more of an army-like feel. The way DF portrays the factions is exactly how I picture them.

We should create a brainstorming thread in order to think up ideas for the line.

Althought I deeply love DF minis (I have a nice bunch of them, lucky dog!) and I would like the idea of DF making a lot more, I think the company would need to grow much much bigger to be able to invest time in this project without diminishing the amount of time dedicated to terrain projects, which always will be the ones that makes the more profit, I think. I'll be happy if that day arrives, though. By the time... what about DF creating creatures that are at the same time terrain and miniature?

I mean by that to creatures that are really big or that can't move, or that usually combat from a particular position. Imagine floors with hell pits with swarms of shattered skeletons reaching out to grasp the PC's, ropers hanging upside down (as stalagtites) from the ceiling, massive gods chained to runic columns, titanic water creatures half-out of the water, like a sea serpent bending to attack people in near solid ground, living caves with walls full of tentacles and eyes, giant machinery/golem as part of the walls and the ceiling that attacks with enormous limbs/arms and doors that are his gargantuan jaws, etc.

Ok just chatting, I think it's not very likely to happen, but now the seed is planted and... you can tell: it would freakin' ROCK!!!

Greetings!

I really like this idea! I took some tentacles from a Reaper Well of Doom mini and based them with green stuff so I can place them in my DF displays, either in water or coming out of cracks in the ground. More of that would be awesome. For stability and modularity sake, I'd suggest removeable, pegged items. That way you can either have "normal" terrain, or inhabited space. And, it would be less likely to break during shipping/storage. (protruding tentacles etc. would seem very fragile to me otherwise)

In general, I think people need to remember just how small DF is, and how narrow their profit margin is. There may not be many companies that make prepainted minis, and maybe none do quite what DF did, but the fact remains that DF can do very little with its limited manpower/finances. Any miniature line would severely detract from future terrain offerings, and I don't think most of us would want that. Plus, while the difference between prepainted and unpainted miniatures may be HUGE for some fans, for others a mini is still ultimately a mini, and there remain plenty of options for obtaining fantasy miniatures, while fantasy terrain is still remarkably scarce. For that sort of fan, allowing DF to remain terrain-oriented is a fine choice.

But I do like the idea of mixing it up. Tentacles coming out of water or cracks in the walls, giant arms reaching through broken floor tiles, dragon heads emerging from caves, ghastly aberrations coming through mystic portals.... there are many options....
