I went in for an MRI scan this morning (around 2:00 am), and got the results later this evening from my wife (who also brought me Arby's at work). As suspected, I have a tumor on my pituitary gland (about a 1" tumor, which is pretty big for such a small gland).

The good news is that it's benign, not malignant (i.e., not cancerous). The better news is that it's treatable by a weekly oral medication rather than surgery. In time it should diminish in size, and then finally disappear altogether.

So, I'll be around for many a year. In fact, I'm planning to live to 140 (after that I'll just let nature take its course). I'm running a game tomorrow for the D&D Meetup, and I have some extra special deviltry in store for the players, including two old Grenadier cave fishers I just painted up for some old school encounters.

VERY glad to hear it. 'Grats on the excellent outcome.

Just in case you aren't being nagged from every possible direction, be sure to take ALL the pills, and continue to monitor this even after you are given the all-clear after your course of treatment. (I also smacked a guy I game with upside the head (literally) when we found out his minor seizure was caused by malnutrition rather than a stroke, and gave him "orders" about his future diet.)

And be sure to self-impose a limit on how much you milk this for sympathy-wise, then share (or possibly negotiate) that figure with your significant other and family. This means your wife knows that you only intend to use the phrase "because I have a tumor" a certain number of times, and is less likely to become impatient with the patient. (This is in addition to REAL excuses, such as the condition making you tired, or the pills making you nauseous.) You should use the "sympathy card" for minor things, like getting out of chick movies and asking someone to bring you things from the fridge, never for anything serious like whether you will spend the holidays with particular relatives or who will do the taxes next year.

Oh, and I hear that bacon and cinammon toast are really good for benign tumors of the pituitary. And watching SFF DVDs counts as "radiation treatment". (Feel free to adjust those little nuggets of homeopathic wisdom to things that you actually like.)

Kradlo,

That is great news.

These moments in cold strerile doctors offices or emergency rooms remind us that life is precious. Last month my mother spent an entire week in the ICU and we all thought we might lose her. Fortunately she pulled through and is now fully recovered.

It reminds us that we should really enjoy our time here and make every day count. Sometimes I take for granted my relatively good health...

Living with old parents does tend to wake me up and remind me to be grateful and to cherish the time with them before they head off to their own grey havens

Good health my friend!

Good to hear the good news for you. Indeed - as Stefan said - there is so much we just take for granted. And thanks for sharing this here - it sometimes feels like a big family here.

In regard to playing the sympathy card - celebrate by ordering some DF. After all it is only money you part with and joy you will get back. Or is it too late and you already have everything you wanted and need to wait for the next sets from Stefan ...

I've been joking with my wife about the "sympathy card." I've told her that a brain tumor is like a "Get Out of Jail Free" card - you can get away with anything. If they ask you why you did something, you can answer, "Brain tumor."

She's rolling her eyes already. I've a feeling that I won't get squat out of this one. Well, that's okay, so long as I get this to go away.

And believe me, I will be taking the meds as long as necessary. No one has to tell me twice! That I can alleviate this without surgery is incredibly good news.

As for ordering more Master Maze, I may have to wait until the next pre-release schedule, but I will be ordering more. After all, I have to help support the manufacturers of my addiction... er, hobby.

;)

I suggest that, in honor of this, you name your next character Pituitary the Strong!

Kradlo, Stefan;

Good news from both of you! Ahh, Kradlo, are you SURE you want to go 140+? Someone told me that after 100, things get really BOOOORRRRIIIIINNNNGGGGGG.
Stefan, I am glad to hear that you mother is good to go. Parents are a precious gift (we only get two, one of each!), and even when they're being total PitA (eat your VEGETABLES, Stefan! OR you may NOT go paint!), they give us love, care, and moral support - or anyway, the good ones do. I suspect YOUR Mom was a good one, or you wouldn't be so concerned about her.

Everyone hang in there, and I HOPE all you Good Little Boys gave Mom a nice card and gift today, since today was Mother's Day here Stateside. I lost my Mom in 1975 (Liver cancer) and my stepmother is in early senile dementia in GA - but I got me a GREAT Mother-In-Law (and boy, wasn't THAT a lucky find!) and we had a good day with her!

See ya!
