Is there any interest in an Android map maker? 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Recently, I've left the hospital and I'm unable to work. Thanks to this I'm dabbling with Unity3D and I've got a couple of projects going on. One of which, is a, for a lack of better term, dungeon mapper.

It's in its infancy, and only but a few days old, but it's potential could be pretty high. At present, it has these features:
(Touch devices, tablet recommended, but phones will work)
Select, place and delete tiles with a touch.
"Paint" or "Scrub" away en masse with a toggle
    Rotate with a tap
Tile types (walls, corners, etc) remember their previous rotation

Shortly, I'll be adding saving/loading and the ability to change the "table size". I'm more than likely going to add a variety of tile sets to choose from (i.e.: Dungeon game tiles and Cavern game tiles to select from) so that you can start your dungeon in a castle and work your way down. I'm considering adding a "fog of war" to hide unseen rooms.

As a bonus, with it being on Android there exists many opportunities to share screens (sometimes via built in apps), plug hdmi into a tv, or simply pass a tablet to a cartographer/line drawer. If you game in a situation where players are responsible for remembering which way was up, then players might easily use this. On the other hand, a GM might want to play with a design, save it, and draw it out.

My only question is, should I share this with the world on the App store? Is this something that people might be interested in? If I gave away the app for free with the option to purchase additional tile sets is that something anyone might be interested in? Or, should I just do a premium model and just keep adding tile sets? Finally, would anyone find any use for this, freemium or premium, in the first place?

the generic program looks very close what I would like to have for an Ipad.

and I would pay to have it.

the DF mapping program needs an Ipad version with all the tiles. the current version isnt great.

An Ipad version is possible, but makes me more nervous because of the higher fee associated with Apples App store.

Yes, biowizard, there are actually many such programs on the web; however, I didn't see any on the Android play store. I've already mentioned the uses of having it on an android but with the massive proliferation of the Android tablet (iPad too, for these parts) just "holding" the map might be attractive.

Galahad, I think the biggest problem with the map maker that DF provides is actually the interface. I'm happy to say that using /mapmaker/ has made my program (that started for personal use) better. Half of it is just using a touch screen, but having a "repeat" and "paint" (no more click, click, click -- click and slide) makes the process much quicker AND easier on your wrists.

Compared to the DF mapmaker I'm only lacking a share and select (and group-move) tool. The group move tool didnt even occur to me because of how quickly you can build a dungeon, but I'll have to give it some thought now.

I had a question for any person interested in dungeon mapping software for mobile:

What tiles would you desire for mapping? For instance, right now I have floors, walls, a door, a diagonal wall, an open passage and corner pieces. Would you bother with pieces with walls, or would you be inclined to use just "floor" tiles and assume anything that isn't a floor, is a wall (with door tiles and the like for entrances). It would be similar to the card stock print outs you'd receive with some campaigns/modules.

I personally can see the argument for either and I wanted outside opinions.

You can't do two rooms that share a common wall unless you have wall tiles.

That's for sure; put that way you've answered my question. I don't normally use those aides so I didn't give much thought to their limitations. I think too many people would want rooms sharing a wall.

I've gotten the map maker to the point where I'm comfortable selling it. Unfortunately (for many of you), it's only on Android at the moment. At best, however, you'll only get a better product if it ever reaches your platform.

I do plan on adding a few things. Primarily, tiles and tile sets in the future. Additionally, Treasure and "detail" objects are not yet implemented.

Even if you're not interested in buying such a product, as fellow gamers, I'm interested in hearing your truthful opinion.

Edit: Naturally, I forgot the play store link:
