I think I'm in love.... 10 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Wow... this thing is just outstanding.

Some forum members may remember my love for the Skaven Doomwheel or whatever it's called. A giant wooden wheel filled with gears of all kinds and spikes, with giant jagged blades on the end. I used it as a piece of mining equipment in the DF caverns, and I also used it as some kind of experimental magical engine in an MBS layout with a lot of wizards and bookshelves. It's just so cool -- vaguely steampunk, extremely elaborate, nutty.

But this crazy thing... wow.

First, I like the fact that you have two options. Sure, if I actually played Warhammer, I'd have to buy two of these things if I wanted both. But since I'm just getting these for dungeon dressings, it seems like it'd be pretty easy to build just one whole machine and use the leftover parts to make some variation, smaller and incomplete but still effective.

The "hurricanum" looks like it would be a fantastic centerpiece to a crazy observatory, some kind of mystical forcefield thing, etc. Heck, do it in black and red and purple and it could be the engine that transports people in (and out!) of the Den of Evil!

Yeah, Imma need to pick this up....

The "orrery" style gizmo on the top of the first design is pretty awesome! It gives me fits of nostalgia for the "Dark Crystal". I have to say that it will make my list of future acquisitions. Thanks for sharing that link. If you do pick one up soon, let us know what you can build with leftover bits after you decide which you want to make.

I like your idea of using the "extras" to make Dungeon Stuff.

Looking forward to seeing pictures when you get them done. (hint hint)

Hahaha, me too! Sadly I have no idea when I'll have time to paint this thing. As soon as I can, there will be pics!

In the meantime, here's the doomwheel. This thing is freaking awesome!

I like the Doomwheel as some sort of mining machine. I'll add my voice to the chorus clamoring "nice paint job".

Re:I think I'm in love.... 9 Months, 3 Weeks ago
After much debating and delaying, I finally took the plunge and ordered one. It took me forever to decide how I was going to handle it, because I didn't really want a "wagon," so much as I wanted the stuff that goes on it. At the same time, the wagon itself is nicely elaborate and I wanted to see if I could make some kind of room furnishing with it, a pulpit (most obviously) or something.

In the end, I decided that would be too difficult, and wouldn't QUITE work. So I'm going with a minimal conversion.

My plan will be to mount the Dark Crystal piece (I like that!) on some kind of base, since its actual base is way too small to be stable if you don't glue it to this thing. That will be the centerpiece for a DF observatory, which will have curved corners (and possibly be surrounded by curved passageways, so the whole room kinda looks like a ringed planet).

Then the rest of the kit I'll assemble as intended, with the long telescope thing attached. I'll put on the various telescope accessories (looking more closely at the kit I see that there are various options for how you trick it out). I won't attach the horses, but I'll otherwise leave it as a mobile telesope device. It can be parked near the observatory as a kind of "mobile observatory" which will be used by the astromancers. The kit comes with at least two figures, maybe three, and those will be my astromancers.

So it will be, all together, a neat kind of astrological set. Three figures, a centerpiece for an observatory, and a mobile observatory. A neat thing for adventurers to find in some DF setting, I think. ;)

The painting I'm going to try my best to simplify -- I'll spray the basic wagon in a light ivory color and pick out the details in gold trim. Simple and regal. And then the Dark Crystal piece will be burnished gold and copper and silver.

I look forward to seeing your results Law. This thread has inspired me to try to find a way to get a very small custom map globe, so I can get one with the campaign world's map on it and use it as dungeon dressing. If push come to shove, I can look into getting a little globe and replacing the sphere with styrofoam I seal and then hand draw and paint up the maps myself...

That combined with the orrery, or "Dark Crystal piece" as we have dubbed it, could be used as an awesome set dressing combo. Maybe part of a well preserved laboratory/observatory in the heart of an ancient ruin?

I had one of these included in a trade I made for a large amount of tau (40k anime style) army.

I traded the taus for some Den of Evil.

I may now have to review the hurculanium mini for alternate uses.

LordDust ive actually been working on a globe like that for my forgotten realms campaign but with a map of faerun on it. Mine is small though i hadnt thought to make it as big as that telescope i might have to go back and rethink this now lol.

Glad the idea inspired you a bit. If you think of any cool variations or neat ideas related to it, please share them! Another idea I had while driving earlier was to use some sort of sculpting dough or clay to make a 3D map of the main region for a campaign. It could be used for both standard map uses and/or for dungeon dressing depending on the scale.

A smaller one would make an awesome center piece for a kingdom's war room in a setup. Doing the work would be a bit time consuming on that scale, but the results could be amazing. A bigger one would just be a fun replacement for the standard maps. Now I just have to figure out how to get enough elevation data out of the common campaign settings!

Once I finally get my dedicated work space ready (2 year old daughter makes it impossible to do much without one) I will have to try these ideas out and maybe post some results.
