Any reviews on ScotiaGrendel dungeon accessories? 1 Year, 9 Months ago
Greetings!

I'm looking for reviews on the fantasy line of Scotia Grendel accessories, after perusing the website, I came across a stimulating variety of atmospheric treasures, and I found myself wondering how many of you have gone about using these in your expansive lairs...

Are the resin pieces of good quality and do they assimilate well with the Dwarven Forge style of craftsmanship, or is there a sort of disparate marriage between the two? The photographs are quite small and of the quality of yesteryears, so it leads me to doubt and apprehension.

In particular, what type of 'quirks' are there if any, with purchasing and receiving products from Scotia Grendel to an address in the US?

And lastly would you recommend a competitor's product and why?

There are several examples of them in use in the Cool photos thread.
Many people have them.
The style of stone work is different, as you would expect, for some of the more substantial pieces, but if you choose a sympathic colour scheme you can get it to match fairly well.

The skull fountains are a popular piece. I have had my eye on the swamp monster for a while. But not bought it yet.

On the whole they are nice pieces. The scultping is of a different style of course, but then every other maker will be slightly different to DF..

But I would say you are fairly safe, as long as you try and get a colour pallete to match DF wall pieces.

I do have several Scotia Grendel pieces.

Pro: Nice additions to fill a dungeon - for example Altar or Torture chamber

Con: they sometimes seem to take ages (weeks) to arrive directly from the shop and communication is close to non existent

The Con might have changed - on the bright side - it always arrived eventually. But I felt I should set expectations. Maybe try to check via e-mail / contact webpage how long they reckon it takes.

And no - this was UK to UK. So no transatlantic extra time.

I like dwarven forge better, but grendel is ok when it comes to items that are not available from DF yet.

i have about 25 diffrent Pieces and they all seem to be of ok to great sculpts, with OK resin,, definitly not the best resin . pieces seem to be lighter then some others. They are great accessory items, and a must have (for most pieces) in my gaming realm.

ATM i am in the process of repainting a bunch of them. fun, fun, fun,

I received orders recently from both Scotia Grendel and Thomarillion. Overall I'm very happy with all the pieces. Good quality and very detailed. Even with a simple paint job they really bring a DF set up to life. I will undoubtedly make purchases from both vendors again in the future.

Below are a few observations from my experience:

- Products: The quality of the casting was better on the Thomarillion pieces. The Thomarillion items I ordered required little, if any, clean-up before painting. With the Grendel pieces I had to scrape off some extra resin and putty in a few holes from air bubbles. It didn't take very long to clean-up the Grendel pieces, just longer than those from Thomarillion. The Grendel pieces, however, seem to fit better with the scale of DF. Some of the Thomarillion pieces are a little taller than a DF wall (on items you'd expect to be the same height, while the Grendel pieces are almost exactly the same height. Thomarillion notes the dimensions of each item on their website, so I would just recommend checking those before placing an order.

- Shipping: From the date I placed my order it took me two and a half weeks to get my Grendel order and 3 weeks to get my Thomarillion order. In both cases I received prompt confirmation that my order had been shipped, so I suspect the time is just normal when shipping from Europe to the US (mine shipped to California).

- Customer service: I can't speak to the customer service at Grendel. I placed my order online and since it was received as expected I had no need to contact the company. The customer service at Thomarillion was exceptional. The owner was very responsive to my email inquiries, he provided me different options for shipping, and kept me in the loop during the entire process. I both cases everything arrived in perfect condition and nothing was missing.

Hope that helps.

I support Feymous' comments in regards to the Grendel pieces. Be prepared to patch a lot of tiny holes in your resin pieces with some green stuff! Regardless of the added effort, products of both companies are great. Just choose the pieces that are most appealing/interesting to you.

Concerning patching up holes for resin pieces, I recommend the Liquid Green Stuff from Games Workshop. Since it's easy to use and can fill the holes just by applying it with a brush, it's the easiest way to do it. It's even cheaper than the regular green stuff.

I put in a pretty big Scotia Grendel order around last Christmas; some of the cast turned out good, a few had severe air bubbling. Nearly all required cleaning up with a file and/or knife.

Good tip on liquid green stuff dwarf, I'm going to try that out.
