quesion for people who create terrain or modify existing terrain. say i want to create a sign for a tavern or a computer screen on a piece to represent a computer of some kind. You locate picture on web and print it. my question is what type of paper do you use and then is paper glued on to piece or something else. thinking about creating some homemade barrels, drums or other bits and watn signs or labels on them. what do people use, how, and is there a website people go to to find thse signs or is it done a differnet way. im a complete noob in this
wicked cool

Hi,
Can't help you with sites, unfortunately, but I'm sure someone else can.

As for the rest -- it's entirely up to you. If you want to glue a sign onto a plastic or resin (etc.) terrain piece, regular paper is probably the best bet. It's thin enough that it should conform to the shape/curve of the terrain well, and you don't really want bulky for things at this scale -- thicker paper just looks awfully thick and wrong when it's meant to be something paper thin at 1:72nd the size, you know? So for signs on barrels and drums, I'd advise regular paper.

If you want a free-standing sign or something like that, something that might be hanging from a post or tacked to a wall but partly hanging free, cardstock is a better bet, it's more durable and will hold up better over time. That's available at any office supply place.

In either case, you may want to dilute some Elmer's white glue with water and run the resulting mixture over the label once it's been glued in place, just to give it a kind of clear resin coating to protect it.

As for websites -- until someone else here points you specifically, I'd advise using Google. That'll probably turn up some interesting hits. If you image search for things, you can also get some great image -- black and white head shots of mid-twentieth-century figures make fanstastic Orwellian posters for a sci-fi campagin, for example.

Good luck!

So far i have used either Card stock, or regular paper for my stuff, depending on what i want it to be like (ie how sturdy and what it is in the game) pretty much on the suggestions L mentions.

Some thing i have been meaning to try do is print out some straight up water transfer decals. From what i understand the "paper"/technology is out there for using inkjets, as well as laser printed, i did a search on it, and there are loads of stuff but everyhting i was was online orders. And to just try it once the shipping etc was more than i wanted to pay if i can get it local.

Yeah i just use random Google image search, and sort through the bulk of stuff that comes up till i find what i want.

I keep meaning to ask at my FLGS, which has as a top floor a Train shop, and LOADS and Loads of Models and RC cars on a different floor, so i am betting SOME where in that shop is some thing to do decal printing, and if not they have the resources to order it. I just forget everythime i am in... ;)

I don't know if this is what you have in mind, but Avery makes (made?) sheets of adhesive paper for printing and cutting custom stickers. They also have (had?) a variety that was supposed to have an adhesive that was easy to remove and reuse.

Yes, they still make the 8.5" x11" label sheets.

I use them for many projects -they're fantastic!
