I think it's far better to play in bigs rooms offering many strategic possibilities. In the corridors and in the small rooms, i beleived that there are not varied actions, especially when fighting.

i am reading DF forum and when i find photo, many of them present small room

have you ever think about that?
what about you?

Bigger works for the DF sets. The corridors are tight enough for close quarters fighting, let the rooms be larger to add some variety.

We use larger rooms typically in battle scenarios.

Depends on the map. Some are small others are large.

I Would Have Liked a "Both" Catagory... Small Rooms are Good for Offices, Quarters, Storage what Ever... More than one Entrance/ Exit is Good... And Big Rooms are of Course Excellent for Massive Combats... (Sort of Easier to Set Up Tooo)...

Strangely enough, I wish I had more stuff to do smaller rooms...! I know, it sounds weird, but check out your AD&D modules: they tend towards a bunch of smaller rooms and long hallways.

The problem I have with small rooms is that they're too damned small for the miniatures!

In real life, a dozen people can fit into a 30'x30' room easily and with room for everyone. However, if you're using Master Maze and miniatures, you'll be lucky to fit six. Of course, that's because the miniatures are brandishing their swords and spears, which real people wouldn't be always doing. :D

So as a result, I often end up building my rooms with more space than I initially expected they would need, because I want to have enough area for a decent battle scene.

That is the point of the "effective" 5'x5'. You need room to swing weapons, draw bows, etc.

Mister Sharkey,

That is prcisely why I Prefer Smaller Miniatures to The Biger "Over the Top" Stuff... In Fact I Use Plastic 1/72nd Scale for as much of my Sci-Fi Stuff as I Can, which also of Course makes The Bigger Monsters more Impressive... At 1/72nd Scale there are a lot more options over all... Of Course there is next to Nothing Fantasy available, but there are Plenty of Normans, Vikings, Romans, Etc...

I'd vote both, as well -- a typical layout during one of our games would likely end up being 3-4 rooms/chambers/caverns, all connected together -- the size ranges from 4-inch square rooms up to massive 2-cavern-set caverns.

But I'd agree that rooms smaller than 6-inch squares are more for close-quarters fighting.

The only problem with a lot of small rooms is corners. Never have enough.
