It looks to me like the lava ripples are painted on. Maybe, just maybe there will new sculpts that will also come in water paint to enhance the original water tiles too. :D

They are clearly different pieces, but I think the takeaway is that there will be lava pieces that mirror the water pieces everyone loves (not negative space) and then a transition piece to get down to a terrain tray. I agree that the textures of the lava river pieces look great.

Hmmm, they look quite different to me. Not sure how that can be a different paint job, but ready to be surprised.

Definitely looks similar to the CD water transition piece. Looks like lava river tiles, then a transition tile, then a terrain tray. But the flowing lava texture on the river is very nice.

Well that's because the contrast is so much that you can't see the terrain really except the lava. :P

Start date is 6/16, Father's Day here in the US. Smart move, DF....

I think they could do lava lake tiles on stiff pieces of plastic or acrylic with a graphic overlay printed on top. So terrain trays but a different material.

I think if they were going to do so however, it would still need to be opaque without a backlight.

They could even texture it, as opposed to the KS2 lava river/lake smoothness, which as stated earlier isn't super appealing.

If they stick with the normal terrain trays, which I can see them potentially doing, then I can also see lava banks and a lava river with a transition piece to the terrain tray.
If it is not clear I will not get any. I do not want terrain trays or care much for the yellow pvc. I passed almost completely on city builder and castles. I have no desire to be a completionist.
