BotM and Alternate Builds

Post by Rabbit Burner » Thu Apr 08, 2021 6:00 am

So this feels so anticlimactic after just seeing Sorns latest thread and video.
But for us mortals hopefully this is helpful.

The idea here is again to show the modularity of DF Castles.

Please note we did not add all the details such as flags and barrels etc, we focussed on the bread and butter castle pieces.

There were a couple of things we did not have, small tower battlements and offset windows, also we can only find one small tower door (going to have to have words with Bob again :( ).

We also did not use any TTs we have a grass mat permanently on our table, and we could not find all our 2x2 Small Cutout Flagstone Floors to curve around the small towers on the walls - specifically the inline tower when its used.

We should also mention we ran out of KS4 crenellations (double sided) when it came to the deluxe builds so had to use KS3 crenellations (single sided).

So Nate built this during last months Building of the Build of the Month:

So we got a list of the sets and did the following:

We built a castle as we went along getting each set out (non deluxe), and came up with this:

Then we added the deluxe sets, Artillery post and Inline tower and added them to the above build coming up with this:

As you can see the deluxe package adds a lot more playable area inside the castle :)

So having all the sets and pieces we went about recreating Nates build.

IE this one:

So we came up with this:

As you can see we added the roof and balconies as Ime needed a monologue balcony.

What Nate finished with and was shown in the actual BotM video was this:

Again please appreciate that we did not build with all the detail fiddly bits and we missed all the stairways!

So we then added the deluxe sets and came up with this:

Image

We tweaked a few things, added the second balcony, moved a CBS level from the roofed square tower to the Artillery post to get to this:

Image

So we did not get a top down picture of this one, but we got a ropey one of a very similar build, so apologies for that and the dodgy camera work, not easy standing on our game table and holding the camera almost on the ceiling to get it all in.

But hopefully you can see again the extra playable space you get inside the castle with an extra 2 feet of wall.

Then we just went nuts!

and did this one, which turned out to be so sturdy that the Ultramarines thought it worthy to turn into their Planetary Fortress :)

There may be more builds to follow, but the Death Guard have their eye on this one so things could get messy!

Nice builds there RB. As I mentioned in another thread, just playing around with our Castle Toys and seeing what you can build can be tons of fun and enjoyment. Just like when kids are building stuff with the old Lincoln Logs, or Bridge and Girder sets, or even just blocks. More expensive and better-looking toys, but still tons of fun. It is nice seeing just how much more playable space gets created by the additions to the deluxe package.

Ah Lincoln Logs... the find memories.

Still, I just do not have the brilliant imagination some of you fine folks do. It has really helped me better understand the versatility of this month’s build.... and since we have some of the pieces in the BotM, the versatility of our own small DF castle.

Now we just have to figure out what we need to build the Smuggler’s Fort....

The Bridge and Girder sets would fit pretty well on most gaming mats, since they sort of worked with HO gauge trains as well. Still have some / all of mine kicking around. They also had monorail sets, residential buildings, and even a chemical plant with working water pumps and food colorings to add into various tanks and reservoirs. Been building with toys for many many decades...

These are fantastic castle builds - especially the first one - that is a VERY realistic and very playable castle setup without involving $10,000 worth of pieces

Sadly all i have is a couple of towers... but i get much more joy from other parts of the DF line so i don't revisit castles

The painted version is an even better deal than the unpainted. You get almost double of everything due to the painting muck up.
