TOPIC: Diagonal Walls & Passages

A couple of forum-goers have mentioned (the lack of) diagonal walls lately, and I realized that there isn't a single (basic Fantasy) set left that features them. That makes me sad.

So here are some diagrams of rooms that we can't build without diagonal walls. I'll follow up with some other related pieces that might be designed and packaged with diagonal walls, possibly as part of Advanced Builder Set 3, or maybe as a special Diagonals set.

Not pictured, along with diagonal walls I'd love to see the triangular 1/2-floor piece that goes with them, and perhaps a diagonal door as well.

This piece won't do much from a practical standpoint -- it doesn't even give us a complete square to put a figure in. However, 45-degree corners (absolutely have to have two, mirror images) do provide a certain aesthetic that I think would enhance certain room designs.

Rather than purchase lots and lots of diagonal walls to make diagonal passages, or design new 2" and 6" passage pieces, a couple of 45-degree conversion pieces will let us cock passages at an angle.

Obviously, every piece "beyond" the conversion will be canted, and getting a canted section of a layout to connect to the uncanted section in more than one place might be tricky.

One piece will allow us to put a standard passage piece at the corner of a room.

I'm not going to show the larger pieces that I rejecteed before I got to this one. They involved odd angles, or odd floor squares, or large sizes, and they all required two pieces (mirror images) to accommodate all angles.

This, on the other hand, is a single piece that would allow us to put a standard passage piece at a 45-degree angle to the end of another passage, or to a wall in a room. One "square" is too small, and the other is too big -- GMs might rule that the small square gets skipped over when counting movement.

If the post on the narrow end of the piece is too fragile, or prone to warping, we can probably leave it off -- the space left unfilled is actually smaller than that of standard wall pieces arranged to form an "outside corner" of 90 degrees.

Edit: Using two of these is the same as a regular 90-degree passage turn, but three together make a 135-degree angle that's kinda cool.

That's a total of seven distinct pieces.

6 Diagonal Walls
6 Diagonal Floor Fillers
2 Diagonal Doors
1 45-Degree Corner (left)
1 45-Degree Corner (right)
2 45-Degree Room Corners
2 45-Degree Passage Turns

That's a set of twenty pieces. If that's too few, throw in more Diagonal Walls (and the floor fillers to go with them). If that's too monothematic, there's room for some other stuff as well.

And bear in mind that every one of these is actually smaller than most standard DF pieces. That means that a Diagonals Set might have lots more pieces than other sets.

I'd buy that!!! (great drawings & ideas JA!)

Its time to return to the Regular old Master Maze Line and give it a good solid boost!

Yeah yeah, ABS2 is AWESOME - I completely agree!! However, we do need diagonal walls...and maybe a new large floor tile with a different design?

Jack, that 45 degree angle piece is a very cool idea.

I'd buy that set, including mulitples if the usual bonus item was offered.

cheers for the cool idea,

but do you guys really use df often and regularly in a roleplaing session???

I do and i found out the following:

the complex, fiddly pieces see use only on rare occasion or are never used
it takes too much time to set them up, when you are in a hurry to put
the combat evironment together.

So the following are rarely used:
- Advanced Builder II (except for the doors of course)
- Half Floors, Walls, Corners

For me the diagonal thingys would be nice and i would get a set for collectors
proposes, but for pratical use i see not much.

If you set up the dungeon the day before, it may not cause as much hassle to
use the complex pieces than for me, so it would have more use.

enough rant.
I would rather like some more decoration stuff like:
- new columns
- new pedastals
- larger pedestals etc...

Everyone uses DF differently, and maybe specialty pieces don't get used for simple set-ups on the fly. But a lot of people set up in advance, or according to a prepared plan that may include specialty pieces. (If you already know which piece goes where, and have the pieces ready, setting up doesn't actually take very long and can be done during a break.) A number of users also want to set up dungeons from classic (or new) D&D modules, which frequently feature diagonal passages and odd room shapes.

Really well thought out pieces! I really hope these come about. For each of the sets.
