August 16, 2007 (Renton, WA) – Whether you storm a mad wizard's tower every week or haven't delved into a dungeon since you had a mullet and a mean pair of parachute pants, one thing is certain - millions of D&D players worldwide have anticipated the coming of 4th Edition for many years. Today, Wizards of the Coast confirms that the new edition will launch in May 2008 with the release of the D&D Player's Handbook. A pop culture icon, Dungeons & Dragons is the #1 tabletop roleplaying game in the world, and is revered by legions of gamers of all ages.

The 4th Edition Dungeons & Dragons game includes elements familiar to current D&D players, including illustrated rulebooks and pre-painted plastic miniatures. Also releasing next year will be new web-based tools and online community forums through the brand-new Dungeons & Dragons Insider (D&D Insider) digital offering. D&D Insider lowers the barriers of entry for new players while simultaneously offering the depth of play that appeals to veteran players.

The 4th Edition rules emphasize faster game play, offer exciting new character options, and reduce the amount of "prep time" needed to run the game. D&D Insider includes a character creator that lets players design and equip their D&D characters, dungeon- and adventure-building tools for Dungeon Masters, online magazine content, and a digital game table that lets you play 24/7 on the internet — the perfect option for anyone who can't find time to get together.

"We've been gathering player feedback for eight years," said Bill Slavicsek, R&D Director of Roleplaying and Miniatures Games at Wizards of the Coast. "Fourth Edition streamlines parts of the D&D game that are too complex, while enhancing the overall play experience. At its heart, it's still a tabletop game experience. However, D&D Insider makes it easier for players to create characters, run their games, and interact with the rest of the D&D community."

Wizards of the Coast will release two 4th Edition preview books in December and January — Wizards Presents: Classes and Races and Wizards Presents: Worlds and Monsters. The first live demos of 4th Edition will happen at the D&D Experience gaming convention in Washington D.C. in February 2008. The full scope of 4th Edition books, miniatures, and adventures will be available in the spring and summer of 2008.

Since its first release in 1974, the fantasy roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons has taken millions of players on imaginary adventures of epic scale. Today, D&D is universally regarded as the original game that created the roleplaying game category, and the inspiration for generations of game designers. D&D is enjoyed by millions of players worldwide, while countless more remember it with fond nostalgia

ill reserve judgement until final product . if 3.5 is fairly compatible then im ok with it. if its a whole new sytem similar to the jump from 2-3 then ill be very hesitant. wouldnt mind some streamlined rules, a better bard and other core class's such as ranger . id be shocked if they stuck in warforged as a core race.
wicked cool

And me just about to start law school! How convenient. When I eventually have time to return, I can pick and choose which 4e products seem to have worked. Until then, I get to know I'm not missing out on any cool 3(.5)e releases!

After finally getting a chance to read the saga rules almost cover to cover, and i think i have it all puzzled out, in some ways i kind of hope D&D doesn't go sagaesk. There are some great things in it, but i am still totally up in the air on the way they are doing skills. I like the streamlined system of far fewer, but Gosnargh, people complained that feats made Ftrs the same, with the Saga Skill system skills are very cookie cutter and generic in points allocation, if it's a class skill and you didn't train it, you still get points in it everylevel, if you trained you just get +5 to your check... With fewer skills and auto upgrades it means it is far more likely for people to have the same skill bonus in something at the same level.

I will be reserving judgement until I see it. I personally think that 3.5e is the best to date system and most versatile and easy to manage as a DM. 4e could be just a money making thing.

Wow, over at the official DDM forums things are going sour rapidly.

Seems that DDM is going to transition to a new rules set, a kind of 2.0 version that's compatible with 4e. Part of that is going to mean that the old stat cards will be out of date -- WOTC will offer replacements online that can be printed out. Someone did the math -- there's something like 692 minis all needing new cards. Sure, you can print 'em out, but that takes time, effort, and isn't really hte same thing as having nice official cards. There's an incentive now, albeit a slight one, to give up.

Ugh.

I don't play, but I like the minis -- I really hope the game isn't killed by this decision.

I am all for it even though I have $400 worth of books that will be obsolete. IMHO 3.5 is so horribly broken that 4.0 is a welcome thing. I actually just switched my campaign back to Advanced Dungeons and Dragons due to my frustration with 3.5. Don't think for a minute that your 3.5 books will be compatable. This is a business for them and they make their money by making you buy all new books. GamesWorkshop has been doing it for years and years.

Crap on a crap-cracker !!!

I just, no more than 2 months ago, picked up the 3.5 core rule books and several supplement books !!! And don't even get me started on all the miniatures over the last few years !!!! We all see how well "upgrading" to a v. 2.0 worked for Mage Knight !!!! Granted Wizards is a bigger company, with a bigger following and deeper pockets.

Oh well, wait and see I suppose. Obviously I don't need to upgrade right away (as evidenced by my only just picking up the 3.5 stuff) !!
