In the Fantasy forum, Kaladhan posted a thread titled "Boat Set", in which he expresses his desire for a modular ship set. There is some question about feasibility -- this is my take on it. This is not necessarily anything that DF would or should do, but I thought it was an interesting problem and decided to play with it.

In the first image, two Port Forward pieces and two Starboard Forward pieces are arranged to create a canoe hull vessel 40 feet long. Each piece is 1"x4". The heavy line represents the edge of the deck, which ought to have a railing -- if the railing has openings (beam on top of risers, for example), wooden oars might be slotted through it.

In the second image, a Port Stern and Starboard Stern piece are used to create a 30 foot vessel with a square stern. Each piece is 1"x2".

The third image is where things get complicated, but versatile. Port Bow and Starboard Bow pieces are placed diagonal to Port and Starboard Forward pieces to extend the length and breadth of the deck. "Amidship" pieces have been added to each side AND the stern to lengthen and widen the deck. And Deck tiles (no rails, just wooden floor) in standard 2"x2" (and one 1"x2") are placed to fill in the expanded deck size.

Note that the Forward pieces need to be designed so that the railing/edge joins smoothly with Amidship and/or Stern pieces at one end, and with Bow pieces at the opposite corner.

A ship can be lengthened using two Amidship pieces and some Deck pieces. A ship can be widened using two Bow pieces, one Amidship piece, and some Deck pieces.

For a mast, a simple wooden column should do. If it is highly desirable for characters to be able to move in the rigging, it might be possible to create a column that accepts the ends of two flat spars -- the outside end of the spar might have a clear resin post to support it, allowing minis stand on the boom(s).

To fancy things up a bit, alternate Amidship pieces with wire or resin "rigging" might be made. Pieces with figureheads might be made for the front end of the ship. If folks are dead set on stacking, Amidship pieces with stairs and railings can be made to go on the outside of the deck, and Deck pieces with walls and with doors can be added.

Thoughts? Questions? Other ideas? Post here and/or in "Boat Set" over in the Fantasy forum.

Hi
I think it is a brilliant idea!
I would love to see a similar set for Sci fi space ships.Taking our own space shuttle as a model.

2 front/cockpit sections
2 or more rear engine pieces
2 doors/possibly ari loc or iris valve pieces
2 or more side pieces
Floor pieces as needed
at least 1 roof piece

and that would be a set that could handle any starship needs.
And if you took 2 set you could easily make one large ship and one small ship.

I could use a set like this for
Starport battles
EVA space boarding actions
Ship to ship combat
Combat inside space ships

You wouldn't really need more than one basic set and maybe some individual pieces here or there.the Sci fi line is only a few set and this one set would only make the sci fi/Fantasy sets even more enjoyable.
Thanx for your time,
jackevil

I also think the basic framework would work perfectly for your
Fantasy sets as well.

One set for each Sci Fi and fantasy and it would open many new doors

Hi guys!

Yeah, it's me, ole Mister Reality, stoping by for a check.
OH YEAH! I like both your ideas; unfortunately, without a positive survey response from a LOT of gamers, I don't see DF doing either one of these, because 1), it's NOT going to be a cheap design process, for either set (Fantasy or Sci-Fi), and 2), I'm not usre how big a market there is going to be.
I mean, sure, RabidFox* and I would both be customers for the sci-fi version (am I right on that, RF*?), and I might buy a Fantasy set, but right there, you've lost 25-50% of your committed buyers!
IF Jeff can find a big enough market for it, and
IF Stefan can design the pieces so they won't cost an arm and a leg, then
MAYBE the sets would sell enough to at least break even for DF.
Then, and ONLY then, are we likely to see the ship sets.

I hope it DOES come true; I really do. I just don't see it happening any time soon. Jeff has to get DF on a consistently profitable basis (remember, this is these guys and gals livelihoods; for us, it's just a game) before he and Stefan DARE take risks THIS big again.

See ya!

Thanks Jack Attack!

I really appreciate the input anyway and especially because you illustrated your idea on a graph...very helpful always. I like a ships idea both for starships and also for fantasy and hope that one day it can be possible...you never know! Keep the dreams coming because it cant hurt to dream and sometimes those dreams become realities...or at least little miniature dreams of reality!!

I am always going to need starships of all sizes and shapes.Hopefully enough other people will see this post and maybe someday there will be a great enough need (for both sci fi and fantasy) for ships.
I am currently looking for a gazillion lead/pewter ships for an upcoming Boxing day tournament.
Thanx again,
JE

Ship sets definitely sound interesting. And I'd likely pick up some sets (both sci-fi and fantasy). But, they are pretty far down on my list (there's a lot of other things I'd like to see first).

Yes, I would find often them useful and, presumably easy to use as well-(being smaller setups).

Overall, I think this is a great idea and a fantastic analysis of the requirements.

(If it hasn't been suggested somewhere before), I would also like to see some free-standing (2 or 3 sided) interior walls (perhaps with MBS-styled doors) that were sized and designed to fit within the ships hull/design as well.

(both sci-fi and fantasy).
Well, Fantasy ones for sure. If future shipping options change then I may be able to afford to buy/ship the 20-25 Sci-Fi sets I would require, especially if there was another sale/promotion at the time. Until then I will be content to continue expanding only the existing lines of my collection.

But, they are pretty far down on my list (there's a lot of other things I'd like to see first).
Agreed.

I have 3 (of 4) Lake Sets and 3 (of 5) MB Sets sitting unpacked awaiting stairs, pillars, railings, all-water and corner (shore) pieces.

I really like the idea, but I don't need those pieces/sets anywhere near as much as the ones listed above.
