Well, in the light of recent events, I thought it would be helpful to post a Code of Conduct that we can all agree to follow. I encourage everyone to suggest additions/modifications to what I'm listing here, and hopefully we can avoid future chaos by having a CoC to point to in case of emergency... ;)

1. Above all, be courteous. Everyone is here to have fun, to talk about a hobby. Nobody comes here to be scolded, belittled, insulted, etc. If you can't be polite, find somewhere else to spend time.

2. If you have a problem with a member, take it off the boards. Exchange PMs, e-mails, or miscelleneous bad vibes. But after a post or two, the fighting should be taken off-board. Stefan and the others are being EXTREMELY GENEROUS in letting us have this forum, and in particular letting us post freely on off-topic areas, including products from other companies. WOTC wouldn't let you talk about GW on their D&D minis forum! Since we're allowed to talk about a LOT of stuff here, let's at least make flamewars strictly forbidden.

3. Discussion of personal history/education/career experience is fine to share, but nobody here is an authority but the admin. Your education, experience, career, or personal relationship with God, none of it makes you a "Preferred Member" of the forums. (This is not aimed at anyone in particular -- I've been guilty of posting my credentials in the past myself)

4. Nobody here has spent too much money on DF. (I'm sorry, but that irked me -- we don't come here to be upbraided for having a lot of DF, most of us can find people in our own homes perfectly willing to express that sentiment! :) )

5. Nobody here has a bad setup. If you don't like someone's setup, just be quiet about it. If you have suggestions or things you think could be done better, helpful suggestions, worded politely, are fine. But "Oh, I'm so sick of that sort of setup!" is out.

6. Remember the newbies. This is the official DF forum, we have to expect that casual customers and curious newbies are lurking or just finding us. They shouldn't be discouraged by a critical, negative atmosphere. They shouldn't be afraid to post what they have, or want, or like. They shouldn't be afraid that they'll be a second-class citizen here.

7. Remember the Principle of Charity -- until someone proves otherwise, assume that they mean well. If they list the amount of DF they have in their sig, assume they aren't bragging. Etc.

8-9. Nobody cares if you win a fight on the internet. You aren't in the UN here, nothing is usually at stake, and nobody is impressed. No matter how strongly you feel, sometimes you just have to let it go for the sake of general peace.

10. Not every opinion is just an opinion. Everyone is welcome to post their opinions, and every opinion is valid -- BUT -- "I happen to think you're a moron, and this is childish, and I'm better than you" is not really an opinion. There's always a courteous, open-minded, friendly, and encouraging way to express an opinion (and to express the truth), so if you fail to be courteous, open-minded, friendly, and encouraging, the fact that you're telling the truth (or "hey, I'm just giving my opinion") doesn't excuse you.

I really do not mean to single anyone out here, so if you feel like this list is somehow picking on you in particular, I promise it isn't. (item #7 applies here) If you want to add, or subtract, from this list, please feel free! I'm not the Forums Police, either -- I just want us to have a CoC around to settle future disputes.

Hope this helps, let's get back to talking about DF! :D

I agree that something like this is badly needed, but I have to say that I find your point #8 highly offensive. You admit yourself that this might be the case, and that you feel guilty about saying it, so why didn't you just delete it before posting it?

Paralympic athletes (not 'Special Olympic') are incredibly courageous individuals who are certainly not 'retarded', and should be admired, not ridiculed.

You seem to have covered all of the really important issues. Whenever a discussion on a topic starts to focus on how and why people said whatever they said or thought the others were saying, it should be a signal to stay out of the way!

I agree on the comment on number 8, though.

For a more tasteful way of expressing point 8 you might appeal to the old "wrasslin with a pig" saw.....ie you both get dirty and the pig likes it....

It might be nice to indicate who the Official Dwarven Forge representatives are on the forums. I know that "admin" is official but I'm unsure if there are any others.

This way anyone new to the forums can easily tell if a post that sounds like someone speaking for Dwarven Forge really is some speaking officially for Dwarven Forge.

And point #8 really needs to go.

Yeah, guys, I officially apologize for #8. I've actually worked with several people involved with the Games, and they've never been taken aback by the remark, but I understand. It just seemed like such a succinct way of stating the point. Point is, it doesn't matter who wins a flamewar. It's just a waste of everyone's time.

So, apologies again for everyone who I hurt.

See how easy it can be sometimes?

Actually, that was the ruckuss. Oh dear, I started with the best intentions of calming things down and we've already hit a snag.....

For the record, I've never quite gotten why "retarded" is taken to be offensive. It literally just means "slowed down." In other contexts, talking of something's growth being retarded is perfectly acceptable. It was originally a medical term for precisely this reason.

Still, I accept the fact that people ARE offended, and it is often used thoughtlessly, so I relented. I edited my original post to take out the original reference to this oft-cited bit of nettiquette. Again, I'm sorry to the people I offended, and I hope the newly revised Code is something we can agree to.

Can we add a "no name-calling" clause.

It's a pet peeve of mine.

Either way, I agree with this list.

It's that way for MOST pea-brained people.

Too much Dwarven Forge to list!

I particularly liked the part about "nobody has too much DF." I've always felt that way, but my dwindling closet space in my office may indicate otherwise. I do know that my car won't hold it all. Good thing we're thinking of getting a minivan. :D

I can't help it. I love this stuff!
