This whole thing sort of reminds me of night before last...

You all know I'm more into live roleplaying than the boardgame variety, and this weekend one of the larp societies I'm a member of had its annual spring party at the medieval village we've been building in the woods out in the middle of nowhere.

Afterwards, when I and my wife and several others had decided to retire to the second floor of the inn, some people still sat in the common room downstairs to drink, talk and play dice. Around 2.30 in the morning I thought enough was enough, and I went downstairs to ask them to be a little more quiet. It actually worked, as I decided to be polite and reasonable and softspoken.

A flame war is not too different from an argument at 2.30 in the morning, when you have had a little too much to drink.

Even if you _think_ you are in total control of your arguments, you are not, just because it's 2.30 in the morning and you've had too much to drink.

If you're on the receiving end, you are not really listening, because you are also struggling with your arguments, simply because it's still 2.30 in the morning and you too have had too much to drink.

And somehow, both of the arguers are subconsciously aware of the fact that they are not coming across, so they both raise their voices, as that is the _only_ way to get across when it's 2.30 in the morning and both of them have had too much to drink!

Flame wars really aren't that much different, you know...

Willypold, Yeah, they are either unable to understand the other point of view or at this point just don't want to back down. They may also know something as fact but the other does not seem to want to admit it. Maybe a little trust that they know something we don't until it can be proved otherwise. I don't think anyone, "on these boards at least" is trying to snow anybody for fun or whatever reason.

My 2 cp:

Having been a long time member of a very active board and having some of the mod duties there, I believe that for any board with a wide range of members (international) to be successful you need to have a CoC of some kind to mandate the bevaviour on said boards.

Trolls, grammer nazis, political philosophers, etal. abound everywhere and in us too. A code of conduct, used correctly, is a shield.

I know for a fact that putting on a flame retardant suit and kepping on with your keep on is a hard thing to do when some one nails you with a maximized fireball, shooting back is human nature. A CoC helps soften the blow occasionally and makes it easier for the blastee to move along letting the flamer bask in their own smoky poo for awhile.

Also, some posters may even mean well when their post inadvertantly flames someone. A CoC may help to define that and teach said poster a lesson or two in internet communication skills (were no voice inflections and body language exists). Emoticons and formatting tools can only convey so much.

Thanks, carnivore. That's exactly what I was trying to express - the CoC isn't a sword, it's a shield. It's meant to deflect things, not to be used as a way to attack people.

Maybe I should have been more clear about that at the start -- I wouldn't expect the CoC to be used as an excuse to ban someone. Maybe eventually, but that would be at Jeff's discretion. At first, it would only be brought up to squash an argument, restore order, calm people down. It wouldn't be a threat.

Maybe a CoC would have helped here.

I will say that my response, while calculated, would have never been appropriate, in my mind, if the user in question had not repeatedly corrected other users spelling, cited expertise about fictional and imaginary creatures, lambashed users for asking questions, and criticized the style and organization of others posts.

I don't like a bully and quite frankly though I find the whole thing amusing it is very sad and kind of emabarassing.

I still feel the same way. As strongly as the community has felt about the behaviours in question, why was nothing done prior to my heavy handed inanity?

If a CoC had been acknowledged would the whole thing be averted? I don't honestly know. However, I've got to think that the user involved along with myself, is a an old veteran of boards and postings, and I don't think that he would find himself to be a stranger to these common rules of etiquette and conduct.

All in all, thar' will be trolls, there will be difficult people and the most important thing, in my mind, is to not neglect the community. If the community with some collectiveness had managed to reign in some of the past conduct I cetainly wouldn't have reacted with the vitriol that I had. However, when others started messaging me with links to threads of past behavior that went unpoliced I decided to have my say.

In general over time, I really do believe that my behavior and posts will be germane and light and topical. I however have a philosophy about bullys and people who treat other people poorly...and it doesn't involve just hoping the problem will go away. Yes, Virginia, there was a problem.

So, are you going to stop then Zuggy?
You signed on to this CoC and then acted the jerk and have continued to do so.
I think that your behavior toward the lady (DLH), my wife and I were way beyond what the allowed is by the CoC or any other behavior codes that you claim to hold to and said that they were/are common knowledge on the WEB.
So, by your own testimony, you behaved in a hypocritical fashion in all the time you have been on this forum.
Interesting.
As a result, I am laying here the CoC warning on you, and we will see if it is worth the salt that L and others claim it is.

I posted this in another thread, too, but for the record -- please, both of you, let the matter drop. If you must continue, do it in private. The boards simply aren't here for this fight.

Both of you seem to fail to realize that insulting each other is provoking a response. RF -- by calling him a jerk, by calling him Zuggy, you're practically DARING him to respond. And MZ, you have to know by now that RF is not going to be silent about these sorts of posts.

This back-and-forth simply has no end at all. In asking both of you to adhere to the CoC, I'm not making any judgements about who is right, who started it, or anything like that. And I'm not threatening anyone with a ban (a threat I couldn't even enforce, anyway) I'm simply requesting that you follow the CoC.

I second L's call to put this to an end and I thank RF for stating that he agrees to do so. Zug?
