First Impressions... 11 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I attended GenCon this year... it was my third one. I usually take my family out to Indy and my wife takes the kids all over while I enjoy the "best 4 days of gaming". They go all over the place... to the zoo, the Children's museum, stuff like that. They have seen far more of Indy than I have, that's for sure.

Sometime around May, after the kickstarter ended, I decided I wanted to pull out all of my resin sets and set them up before the crazy amount of Dwarvenite pieces arrived and make it pretty much impossible. At this stage I am more a collector of DF than a user, because I have no one to play with. That will change as my kids get older. But as it is now, most of the time I get a new set, open it, build it, then pack it up and put it away. So, I have never had them all opened at once, and figured I would do that before the Dwarvenite arrives. I am almost done with the grand set up, but work has cut severely into my free time, and the "big build" has been waiting to be finished.

Anyways, when I started to put it all together (no plan... just piecing it together) I decided to enlist the aid of my two daughters, who were 7 and 6 at the time. They have been "helping" me set it up. Leah, the older of the two, really took to it. She has a vivid imagination and she just got caught up with the whole Dwarven Forge thing. I told her it would be used to play Dungeons and Dragons when she gets older, but she seems to prefer referring to it as playing Dwarven Forge every time she reminds me that we are going to be doing it. Anyways, as any true DF fan, every "next set" we opened became her favorite... with the favorite lasting as long as the next set. Through all of this she learned about Stefan, as I told her about that "crazy guy" who could make all of this neat stuff. She became a huge fan of Stefan. I happened to mention to her that I met Stefan at GenCon before, and that he would be at this year's GenCon too. She begged me to promise to take her into GenCon and let her meet him. I told her we could probably do that, and it was all she talked about for the month of August.

Fast forward to GenCon... I brought my whole family over to the Dwarven Forge booth, but Stefan was out. We returned some time later, and he was still out, however, someone in the booth called him on his cell, and he interrupted whatever he was doing and came right over.

Sometimes, you get to meet one of your heros, and they don't end up living up to the excitement. That was definitely NOT the case with Stefan! My daughter became very nervous and shy when he showed up, but Stefan was too cool to keep her shy for long. He was wearing some kind of an animal fur, and he mentioned how he was getting ready for the winter season. She got a kick out of that, since GenCon was in August (and she doesn't miss a beat!), and that loosened her right up. Then, Stefan went into the booth and came out with a set of Dwarvenite stairs and gave it to her. Wow! She was so excited! Dad didn't even have Dwarvenite yet! She then proceeded to tell him about the idea she had been thinking of for the last month or so... a desert-themed DF set. Pyramids, tombs, traps, all kinds of stuff. Stefan told her that it sounded pretty interesting, and, well, just acknowledging her idea with enthusiasm pretty much just made her day.

So, thank you Stefan, for not only creating this wonderful product, but just for being the cool guy you are, and making a memory for a little girl that will last a lifetime!

Doesn't surprise me a bit.

I've never met Stefan, except through the forums. And while I don't always agree with him, I've always liked him.

Great story, thanks for sharing.

Completely awesome story! Sounds just like Stefan, even though I have never met him either despite attending 3 different Gen-Cons and stopping by the booth multiple times!

One question: where are the pictures from the momentous meeting?!?!

That is a great story and memory for both your daughter and you! I too have not met Stefan other than these forums and exchanges on Facebook. But I know gaming with kids and getting them into gaming is very big with him. So this sounds exactly right in line with what I know about him.
Thanks for the post!

Thanks for sharing that awesome experience with us shoe. Having met Stefan this past GenCon in person as well I was very struck by the sincere joy and passion he has for what he does. The fact that he is so good at sharing it with everyone no matter their age is just icing on the cake. Keep up the good fight Stefan, you rock man!

My players rue the day I bought "Dragon Mountain". Ever since they give every creature a bit more respect. You never know when the GM will decide that this group is crafty...

How cool is it that your daughter is the first one to get Game Tiles!

Great story and just confirms how i feel about Stefan and DF. I am a newbie, but the more i learn the more genuine this company seems to be. Great folks

I am soooo jealous of your daughter, i would be building stairs and dais(s) all day long!

Cool story! It looks like your daughter is already having a blast with that one pack!

Who knows, because of "playing dwarven forge" she might just be inspired to be an architect or artist!

Great story!!
Thanks for sharing it with all of us!!! :-)
I've been quiet about it to my 11 y.o. son.
He would ask every day otherwise, I'm sure!
He spends a lot of time playing Minecraft.
He is going to pop when he sees 10 sets plus stretch goals plus 7 add-ons.
Hehehe

Thanks Shoesan! Of course I remember meeting you and your family, sorry I was never around...you really were persistent so I think it is YOU, her Dad who really is the hero here:) She is lucky to have a father who cares so much for her and who spends time with her...it is these special stories that really bring joy to me, my mother, and Lulu and help me persist when things don't go smoothly or when your too tired to go on...knowing that what you do matters to so many people gives you strength and happiness:)
Hope to see you and her next year!
PS
She seemed like a great kid, genuine and smart! Hope you post some stuff she builds!

That is a great story. My kids call it playing monsters. We have modified the rules for them so they have fun. However the fun part for dad is spending the hours building together. The actual "play" time where they take their knights and destroy dad's monsters is only 30 or 40 minutes.
