TOPIC: Table with LED Centerpiece

Table with LED Centerpiece 3 Months, 1 Week ago
I started work on another piece I've been planning for awhile. It started out as an idea for a table with glowing crystal ball. If you have seen my other posts about crystal balls and tarot cards then you know my idea is to set up a gypsy scene complete with the glowing crystal ball on a table covered with a tablecloth and tarot cards.

But, as with most of my ideas I like to make them modular so they can have many purposes with minor adjustment. So now the idea is that there will be a table with swappable centrepieces such as a crystal ball, crystal skull or even normal skull with glowing eyes/mouth, book with glowing runes, candle, etc... I'm open to others suggestions. The Really cool part is that I plan on also making the LEDs swappable too.

When looking at the pics keep in mind this is a very primitive prototype. I actually plan on modelling the table in resin so that it will fit the electronics exactly how I need.

I like the idea of interchangeability of the table pieces.... Cool.

That Fire Pit looks Familiar?

Can you recess the LED into the table so as to be able to set your prop parts on top and still be lite?

That will be the plan. In the pic it's sticking out a lot because the wood was bored out with a forstner bit and weakened. When I put the base into the recessed hole of the tabletop the tight fit with the spring that I was using as my positive contact broke and pushed the wood up. I'm trying to source parts to build the battery compartment for two small batteries... And I just bought a bunch of mini slide switches like the one I'm using on the table which you can see in the pics. The whole thing should work much better custom cast to fit the small parts.

@kitenerd,

Thanks for that. By the time I'm done getting the pieces to a point of producing them your wallet should be recovered. :-)

With two little kids I'm only able to do my work for small amounts of time after they're asleep... and then it's only when I'm not too exhausted from the day.

But, I've found what feels like the perfect creative outlet for my artistic and technical skills. This is something I hope on growing and turning into a business like what GiffinTamer and Keeblerorc are doing. I also love how creative and encouraging the community is here. I appreciate everyone's feedback and advice.

My wife and I were talking today about the concept of a table with a removable centerpiece. Here's what we have come up with:

The Table Styles
I will be sketching, sculpting and producing several different versions of tables, ie. round ones, square ones, rectangular ones... all with a fat, middle base to house the battery pack. Some tables might be adorned with a styled edge for a fancier look, others may have the tablecloth sculpted as part of the table (depending on how hard this is to mold in resin).

The Centerpieces
Here's what we have for a list already:
- crystal ball - slowly fading between colours, one 'breathing' colour
- crystal skull (same effects as crystal ball)
- plain skull with glowing eyes.
- candle, flickering
- lantern, flickering
- book on small pedestal with glowing runes
- mini cauldron, glowing green
- bubbling and glowing chalice
- crystal formation, 'breathing' colour
- alchemy set

Help & Advice from those with Experience
I'm trying to source some button cell battery holders. I'm looking for tubes that will fit two batteries. The batteries I'm using are AG3 Button Cell batteries, 5/16" dia. x 1/16" thick (8mm dia. x 1.6mm thick).

I've found this place, but it's for a 3-cell setup... which ends up being too tall for a 28mm table:
