Double Door Mod 2 Months, 1 Week ago
Hey all,

Since about half way through the kickstarter I was hoping there would be a double door option but sadly that didn't happen. Shortly after the kickstarter ended I thought it would be possible to make two single doors into a double door and today I finally decided to give it a go.

Obviously since the doors would open the same way it was a little more complex than just cutting the middle out of two doors.

A thought of a bunch of different ways to do it but settled on the following as the easiest method.

First step was to remove a door from the frame and then cut the 'decorative top' off. That way I could turn the door upside down and end up with two doors that are hinged on opposite sides and will open in the middle

Next I cut off the non hinge pillar side of both doors.

With the pillar pieces removed the door isn't wide enough to fill the gap in a wall.

So the pieces I cut off are going to need reattaching.

Then of course the floor needs fixing. So I cut off the floors from one side and reattached on the other.

Finished !!

Originally I was going to cut the top off only one half of the new door and reattach it after I turned the door upside down but I butchered the top a bit when I cut it so that wasn't possible.

I've since made another double door with unpainted doors and have got the top attached ok.

I've joined all the pieces with cut off nails as pins and will glue it eventually but with just the pins it all holds together pretty well at the moment. I will probably leave the door in two halves though rather than joining it in the middle.

Edit: Sorry I've been editing heaps trying to get the pictures correct and then I closed the browser by accident. Hopefully all the pics are correct now and people can view them ok. Let me know if not.

Great work and thanks for sharing. I am a big fan of double doors (and doors in general!).
You have shown us all what many may think about but few will try!

I may well have to get my sharp craft knife out!

P.S - whilst I was looking at all your pictures I could not help but see a 'double demon' door image.. Q. Are you working on something with them or is that a 'mock-up' image ??

Thanks for the kind words, took me a while to get the courage to start chopping but the material is pretty easy to work with. I started at home just with a sharp knife but was struggling to cut straight so I took a trip to my fathers house to use his decent work bench and vice. Ended up doing most of the cutting with a junior hacksaw and smoothed the edges with a stationary belt sander.

The double demon door was my original idea when a few people were complaining about there being too many demon doors in the sets during the kickstarter campaign. That image I made all the way back then and posted it in the kickstarter comments.

In the end I got 5 painted sets and 5 unpainted so ended up with 15 painted and 15 unpainted normal doors. Because the demon door has a large and prominent key hole in it I decided to start with a regular door as I thought two huge keyholes on the demon doors might look a bit funny. I may still think about a double demon door but because you couldn't flip it upside to get the hinge on the correct side the method would need to be different. It would likely have to involve creating new hinge pins in the opposite side of one of the doors. Now that I have a little experience with the material that actually doesn't sound like it would be all that hard.

Too many demon doors? Piffle.

Set up a room with demon doors on every wall. Now you have a trap/puzzle room, and a pretty foreboding one at that.

Demon puzzle rooms were the trademark of Argellus Mikklefoom, the gnome dungeon designer of the Second Reconstruction. He designed dungeons for anyone with the coin to pay, and never repeated the same trick twice in his demon puzzle rooms. If you find yourself in one, conventional wisdom is to leave the same way you came in.

If you are adding posts to the other side of a demon door, have you considered cutting a single demon door so it opens in the middle?

Yeah I like the demon doors and certainly never thought there were too many.

I hadn't thought about cutting a single door to make it open in the middle. That would be possible as well I guess but I'm not sure it is something I want to do at the moment.
