TOPIC: A New Secret Door

A New Secret Door 10 Months, 2 Weeks ago

Our heroes have a problem... according to what the dwarf told them, the entry to the secret treasure vault should be right here. Perception checks all around...

There it is!

This secret door was proposed by jackattack in another thread (LINK). Seemed like a good idea. Basically it is a fee standing wall, hinged on a pin to one corner of a floor piece. Depending on which side of the tile you spin it to, the door opens right or left. This style of door can be used, with wooden doors, two next to each other for a big double door grand entrance.

Today my wife and son went to church and the twins were napping and i found myself with.... free time! Ignoring my task list i decided i would build a big secret door. Including pulling out the tools and putting stuff away, plus taking pictures, it still took less than an hour.

Looks pretty good. From one side it lines up almost perfect, from the other it is a tad off. Not quite perfectly square either (should have checked the drill press before i started), plus i freehanded the wall cut and i think it is a tad off square too. I was hurrying due to the twins nap, but it works as a proof of concept. It is totally usable and invisible unless you look close.

Here is a quick how to for everyone.

First choose your hinge (i just grabbed the first nail i saw that looked about right):

Cut off the head with the rotary tool:

Now time to destroy a wall. First i cut off a 2x1 floor section, that will come in handy somewhere else. Now i cut off the wall cutting through the top of the remaining floor (so i could cut the wall close to flush with the floor). I did my cutting on a miter saw because i have one handy and it cut like a dream.

Next i bult a small jig to hold the pieces in place. The goal here is to have something to clamp in the exact position to support the wall when you drill. It helps to have a bit of height for support, but you cannot go too deep or the chuck will hit the support and not drill deep enough into the floor piece. I happened to have a box of scrap under the saw and just used a bit of leftover shelf board with some redwood end cuts (i live in a construction site).

Find a drill bit that makes a hole the nail fits snugly in but still turns. Align the jig so that the hole is centered in the base of the wall and the distance to the end of the wall is the same. Tipping the jig at an angle allows you to measure the back without the post being in the way.

Set the drill stop so you will not go through the floor and drill the floor first.

Insert the nail and measure the length above the floor. Set the drill stop to this depth in the wall and drill the wall.

Slip the wall onto the nail and you have a secret door!

All in all pretty easy. If i take a bit more time next time, i think i can make it almost perfect. I may try this with hardwood instead of cutting up walls with the goal of creating a big double door entryway. Thanks jackattack for the idea, it is another good one!

PS - sorry for the blurry pics - my old eyes can't see that they are out of focus until i get them up on the computer ;)

I am so glad that worked!

Thanks for sharing the process with us, kitenerd. It looks great!

I'm curious why you cut a wall off of a Straight Wall piece, rather than use a freestanding wall.

I only have a few freestanding walls, and i wasn't about to screw one up! I have a LOT of regular walls so i felt safer destroying one (plus i got the bonus small floor out of the deal). In addition the bottom of the cut wall is smooth so it sits closer to the floor to help the illusion.

They used to make some of these pinned walls in the Traps II set. If I recall they didn't go over real big. I don't use the pieces or even the set very much. The idea was nice, but once you have sprung the trap on your players once it gets rather blasé. The present secret doors are fine IMHO.

Maybe so. And as I said in the other thread, you can do this with a freestanding wall without a pin to swing it on.

But I still like it as a very simple design for a larger door, or two together for a massive double door or gate (secret or not). I really hope that we can get a freestanding massive door in some future set to do this with.

And I mean to do this with pieces from the cavern KS, as it seems like one of the most seamless ways to add a door to caverns. To me, anyway -- YMMV.

But whether you like the idea or not, props to kitenerd for a very detailed, extremely well done step-by-step guide on how he made this modification.

It is a nice mod for those that would like to do it and it was a very well done step-by-step directions, I agree. I just don't see it being popular enough for a set is all I am saying from the Traps II walls.

FYI, I think it is cool that people can do all these mods with Game Tiles. personally, I have an autoimmune disease that has killed my fine motor skills and manipulation in order to do this anymore. I am lucky if I can sit in one spot long enough to run a game for 3-4 hours twice a week anymore yet work. So if I sound like a wet blanket, I don't mean to be. I can do the bigger stuff still, but it takes me forever. I do enjoy reading about everyone's mods and I think they are great, especially the pics!

Given that I do have my own preferences of what I would like to see like everyone. Me - more water sets and caverns. I like a lot of the 2'x2' ideas that have come up.

Great mod kitenerd-- I'll see if I can get some time this weekend and give it a go also. Keep the modification ideas coming!
