DF Game Tile Mod tests 11 Months ago
I started work on these last Friday after getting them Thursday. I did a bunch of tests just trying to get use to the material. Its a little more rubbery than I expected but I love the way it looks both painted and unpainted.

The material is fairly pliable. I first attempted using a jewelers saw, though thin, and you only need to drill a tiny hole to insert it, the blade and the material bind up, making it difficult to control. I found it easier to hard mount the saw blade and then move the piece along the blade. there is no picture of this initial test piece. Yet.

The next day I used the band saw. Using a block of wood to help keep the tiles at a constant angle. I made the three sewer tiles. I tried acetone to help smooth out the blade marks but it really didn't affect the Dwarvenite. I then used a wood burner to make the tiled blocks at waters edge. Though it melts the material, it only displaces it, you then have to file and sand it down. I found it easier to use a hacksaw blade to make the grout lines then to go back and use the burner tool. WARNING- THE FUMES CREATED ARE EXTREMELY TOXIC. USE OUTDOORS AND WITH A FAN BLOWING, IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A GOOD FILTER MASK.

The next pieces were the sewer openings. I created a wood jig with a 2 inch square to hold the Game Tiles still while using a drill press with different sized Hole saws. The first one I drilled a 1 inch hole straight through, forgetting I wanted to put the sewer lid in having a lip to rest it on. I decided just the lid was boring so I used a larger Hole saw and only depressed a little and then used the wood burner to make the surrounding blocks.

The last one was the arch. By this point I decided a coping saw was better at cutting through the material free hand. Using a hole saw I made the arch, then used the coping saw to cut straight down to the floor. I then taped a heavy duty business card to the tile surface with a few layers of masking tape while I cut across the bottom. The card protects the floor tiles from getting cut by the saw blade accidently.

I will be trying out a few different water techniques and also adding steel bars through one of the sewer opening and of course painting.

That is seriously cool. Looks fantastic! Makes me wish I had the tools and setup to try this.
Thanks for the post.

Nice custom work. It'great that the Game Tiles are cheap enough so that we can "dare" modify them. Dogsmile, are you aware that an official Sewer Set will soon be released by DF?

those are excellent.

I would buy some of those tiles.

I will aso get the DF resin line when it comes out but I like the dwarvenite line for its durability. an essential element for use at my FLGS.

But then he wouldn't have the fun of making them, would not have the pieces he wants and would have to buy the new sets!

Nice work!

Band saws terrify me, probably because my 9th grade shop teacher lost two fingers from his hands to one. @_@

Thanks so much for the positive feedback.

I'm looking forward to DF's sewer set, but I just wanted to see where I could take the Game Tile pieces. Sewer entrances and floor grates are always great ways for critters to get into the room with the PC's. I've got a few more ideas I'm playing with. I'll definitely post up finished prototype pieces soon. Once I can produce cleaner looking pieces I'll probably offer the conversion up for interested parties.

Only problem is I would need like 3 sets by Saturday. Too soon? (ducking swiftly). LOL, running a session in the sewers, what can I say? The players probably won't go back in them for a year after this now. Go figure.

Closer pics.

The paints were of course Pokorny, the water is the scenearama Ripplin' Water Kit. I'm testing it out. I've already added a second coat of water since posting. The sewer cover was from a RAFM Iron Lords pack of 6.
