The short answer is no, there has never been any serious discussion of an oriental themed DF set. There have been calls for it in various wish list posting, but no attempts to define features or measure overall interest in the DF community.

These threads come closest, I think.

So let's start here.

The simplest thing DF could do is to make a set of freestanding "paper" walls. This is a smooth white wall with a thin wood grid on it, possibly framed by wood beams. Placed in a GT dungeon room, with MBS floors in the interior, this might pass for an oriental castle.

For me, roofs have always been the main distinguishing feature, but DF doesn't do roofs. What other features define oriental architecture?

I have purchased asian 28mm terrain from renaissance miniatures which did an asian village kickstarter. Their asian pagoda and their asian junk were excellenr designs. They are currently running a pirate kickstarter with awesome ships and docks.

Renaissance Miniatures stuff looks pretty awesome, but I was turned off by the wood. I'm hooked on dwarvinite. I've got a lot of resin but I wish I could phase it out. I've also got some plastic which I don't mind, but dwarvinite is where its at for me.

@jackattack If you compare the building styles of the ancient orient and medieval Europe side by side they are clearly very different, but I'm not the type of guy that can describe those differences very well. Yur certainly right about the roof though.

I live in Japan, and the older buildings are very beautiful, but I am not sure how to do them in Dwarvenite or resin. The sliding paper doors are a good idea, as are flat wooden walls with murals and also just plain wooden walls.

The problem with a lot of interior Japanese decor is the lack of decor. It is very subtle, a sprig of green here, a splash of color there. Not sure how that would translate.

As for resin vs dwarvenite, I am definitely a dwarvenite guy.

I'm inclined to leave the resin-vs-Dwarvenite decision up to DF. If they think the line would have limited appeal, it will probably be done as a resin limited edition. If they think the line will fly off the shelves, it will probably be done in Dwarvenite.

The lack of decoration actually works to DF's advantage. Plain, generic pieces that lay a foundation for multiple specific environments have greater versatility and appeal than highly detailed pieces that only represent one specific environment. Far easier to dress up a plain room than to dress down a heavily decorated room.

Ancient oriental architecture emphasized balance, but that should probably inform our layouts as much as the design of the pieces.

Ancient oriental architecture also relied on wooden columns to hold buildings up, rather than load bearing walls. Thus, timber framing was mostly vertical beams, with smaller horizontal beams between them to define windows or doors. Panels (walls between timbers) might be exposed vertical planks, or might be plastered for a smooth surface. In addition to putting a wooden beam up each side and corner of wall and corner pieces, oriental MBS will want lots of wooden columns.

Japanese interiors favored sliding panels, which I still think would be simulated best by freestanding walls.

I need to dig out some of my DVDs -- The Seven Samurai, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and Ran have some terrific references.

Corrections and additional input welcome, as always.

Personally, I wouldn't need them to be historically accurate or anything. Mixing different Asian cultures would be fine with me. Just as long as they came out as an awesome looking eastern themed set I'd be pretty happy
