I purchased several different shakers at the dollar store so I have small shakers for all of the colors.

I make colored flocking from saw dust. For model work you can sift it and use natural colors. The girls made this for flowers for a school project.

You can make roots or vines with a hot glue gun.

In addition to the usual use of flock, I've found that the Vallejo stone texture paints such as the Grey Pumice and Black Lava work well to create some moss/lichen effects, I just drybrush over the top in various shades of green. I've also grabbed a jar of the Liquitex fibers to see what that looks like when worked.
