Confession of a long-time fan 8 Months, 1 Week ago
I can't believe it, but I didn't back the KS2.

I wanted to. I expected to. Well, to be fair, I was considering not backing it when it was first announced, because I'm literally DROWNING in DF cavern sets. I have three of the basic cavern set, 1 of the cavernous passage set, 3 chasm sets, at least 4 river sets, at least 4 lake sets, both Hellscape sets, and the ice caverns set. I may have even missed something. I have TONS of money and spaced tied up in DF cavernous pieces, and I couldn't justify getting more simply because a) it was a different material, and b) it was a different footprint.

But then the pics came out. And the extras. And it got realllly tempting. And I remembered how much I regretted passing on the Catacombs set, a set I'd STILL be waiting for if I hadn't lucked out and scored one on ebay last year. And I figured it was only a matter of time before I caved. (see what I did there?)

BUT -- somehow, in the end, it never happened. It really did come down to money and space, both of which I need to be as conservative as possible about right now. I've been in this hobby for well over a decade, and when that happens, you have to get very careful. You either greatly reduce what you get or you start tossing out old stuff. Sometimes the latter is an option, because the older stuff gets replaced by newer, better, cooler stuff. But this is DF. The older stuff is still freaking awesome.

That said, I very much may end up picking things up when they show up in the store. A lot of it is just outrageously tempting. I may come to regret my attempt at restraint, if it ends up costing me more just because I lost the advantages of being a backer. At hte same time, maybe I can space out my purchases so I don't have to go "all in" at one time, which would have been pretty much impossible. We'll see.

But I do say "congrats" to Stefan, Jeff and the whole DF team, on a KS that somehow managed to surpass their first outing. And congrats to all the backers, and thanks for supporting DF. And welcome to all the new DF devotees, I'm so glad that the KS campaigns have been so effective about bringing people to this amazing company and their fantastic products.

Can't wait to see people's "in hand" pics and what everyone puts together!

Enjoy!

I understand where you are coming from Law. I have so much gaming crap at
my house it's spilling out into almost every room. If you have a good supply of the classic stuff then I dont blame you for passing.

I was not going to back KS2 at all. I sold all of my bowtied caverns for a good price about 6 months ago with plans to buy NEW bowtie-less versions when they came out. I made enough profit to replace pretty much everything with new sets and get a few more goodies out of it. Well I'm still waiting for those restocks and who knows what the price will be after another round of resin price increases. Also I much prefer the classic paint jobs on the dungeon line vs the KS1 paint jobs so I was sure I wasnt going to get any KS2.

Well the improved level of detail, the amazing add ons ( I'm looking at you elevation pack) and the cheap water tiles made me pull the trigger. I figured if I am changing out my entire cavern setup at least it will match. I hope I am happy with these new sets but worst case I can always trade them out for classic resin caverns in the future. The DF snob in my still wants the resin but I think I will be happy with these new sets. I ended up spending 985.00 but I might get two more water sets and another stalagmite set haha.

I only pledged for two sets for the same reason.I have a lot already. I wish the PVC product was available when the kids were younger.

I am actually the opposite. I never heard of DF before KS1... and I jumped on board only after the hubby laughed at me and shook his head. But once we got them, the kids loved to build 'castles' and I love how they are multipurpose for me. I will probably never own resin pieces, my lifestyle and home couldn't withstand them (they would either be broken or never used)... so GT are the best of both worlds. I can paint, hubby can play, and kiddos can do whatever the heck they want to them...

the were the perfect product for my particular family needs. but i can also appreciate where you are coming from. I see some of the pour your own resin, sculpt your own pieces and I sit here thinking... i could do that.

and maybe someday when the kids are bigger the resin won't be out of the question.

just not right now.

I know what you mean Law. Having so much invested in Master Maze it was tempting to not back the kickstarters, but I went in for both anyway. But I did not go crazy like some of the backers and get 10-20 sets. With what I have 5 with some add ons is plenty. I chose not to get any of the limited edition sets for the same reason. I didn't see a point of adding a new line to what I have. This order will put me at well over 50 sets with add-ons galore.

Re:Confession of a long-time fan 8 Months, 1 Week ago
...Seeing as we are all confessing:
I backed KS1 because I felt that DF 'Needed my Investment' I was also anxious that another bigger badder company would move in if DF was not first. So for 'The Great Game' and for DF who I truly believe also love our hobby - I threw my money into KS1.
IMHO The sets are no way as nice as the original Resin lines and I use them only for the odd building, keeps, churches and castles etc due to their more 'Block' like design. However I have grown to love their robustness and 'Pick up and throw in a Really Useful Box ability' - They REALLY speed game play and take up ZERO space...

I was therefore not really planning to back KS2. I love my Resin Caverns and love the dampness and all the wonderful details, I knew that Dwarvenite could not look anyway as good (based on KS1) so was not that interested but planned to maybe get the minimum pledge so I could get some nice Add-Ons that would be compatible with my resin caverns...
I was wrong. So so wrong...

The KS2 Cavern pictures blew me away. These look MORE detailed than my Resin Caverns!
I was literally taken aback at how much better these looked.
Only downside is they do not look as 'Damp' as the resin products and there are (again) no proper corridors, yet.
(I for one will never be satisfied with 'Cracks and Gaps' everywhere. So the 'narrow corridor piece' for me will only ever be used for straight lines. as even on the 'corner' there will be 'Cracks and Gaps')

I have no idea if I will keep everything or sell some of the old or the new sets... But I plan to give the KS2 Cavern pieces a very good try out and close study when they are in my hands. These could be a real game changer.

I don't support at all the kickstarters.

first due to the price since it's about 800€ for 2 identical painted box sets + all strech goals and additional tiny boxes without postage & package.

So I only play with high quality detailed sets in resin released in the previous years I hardly bought each 6/8 months (the rhythm of the DF releases) to increase my collection and possibilities of sets up.

Even if I missed some cool new pièces in those KS, I cannot afford it and save my money for the catacomb set 2 which is coming soon.

I enjoy reading your comments about the new game line product and see the video posted on youtube. One more KS and all the main resin products are replaced.

Thanks, Stefan! It seems extremely likely that I'll be taking you up on that offer!

I really am excited to see what people come up with when these come in. The lava river looks absolutely amazing, it looks like it lights up the paint is so vibrant. And all the new little greeblies, they just seem like a blast. Totally looking forward to KS3!

I guess I complain too much to be a Hall of Fame backer huh Stephan? No worries as I already backed both kickstarters.
