The only problem I see - many (but not all) of you have not considered the impact of the mystery wicked additions sets. You may find that once Stefan finishes that set, you may very well want to buy at least one. That may throw you over your established budgets.

Blinky,

Thank-you for suggesting the 2 cavern sets + stretch goal option.
Excellent idea and I will definitely be doing this rather than my original plan.

Thanks again for the review and help.

Oh my god, i can't stop laughing at the idea of Wicked Additions throwing us over our budgets... seriously?!?!?, most of us were over our budget two weeks in to the Kickstarter, By the time Elevations came out some of us were unwilling to admit even to ourselves how much we were spending ;)

OK, calming down and getting serious. I really don't see Wicked Additions as a problem. We had a budget for the Kickstarter... we maxed it (or went 40% beyond...). That is all behind us. Kickstarter is over. Wicked Additions is a whole separate issue! Those moneys really should not count toward our kickstarter total, because they came later.

I am currently in at the 5 unpainted cavern sets. The only must have addon for me is the narrow dungeon pack. It is too awesome. They can be:

1. Free standing walls
2. Elevation blocks
3. Passages (duh)

Just so versitile. I also love love love the elevation and platform packs, but based on my experiments with styro blocks you need to go big or go home. I don't happen to have the budget to go big so I have improvised a durable, on spec, crafted solution.

Once again, thank you DF for such a great KS1

I thought I went crazy on the add-ons last time, but for this kickstarter I've really gone off the deep end...

My goal was to have enough to create a range of setups on my 3' x 6' table, with enough floors to create large, open caverns whether or not I use the water pieces. I think this is what I've settled on:

UNPAINTED: (I got painted sets last time, but I think I can do the gorgeous sculpts better justice by doing it myself this time. I plan to do a simple two-step dry brush, and use Tamiya clear acrylics for the water effects)

5 x base sets (should be enough for a cavern with 6-10 small rooms and winding passages, or a single large dragon's lair type cavern filling most of my table)
1 x Narrow Passage Pack (for passages, extra elevation, and the cool trap)
1 x Lava Cavern Pack (I'll paint these the same as the rest for extra wall variety - I don't think I'd use lava enough to justify painting in that scheme)
4 x Water Cavern Pack (enough for a lengthy river including a medium-sized pond like this: www.dwarvenforge.com/mapmaker/shared?mapId=ba9f2f896c0bb8deb95267a092fa8cdd4d5b4a31 - I really wish I could have gotten extra open water tiles, so I'll have to improvise if I want a larger lake. Kudos to Biowizard for helping Stefan with the pack composition. I can use all the tiles pretty much every time I make a setup)
2 x Elevation Packs (I settled on this based on the number of stairs I think I'll need. 8 of each is a pretty good number)
2 x Large Pedestal Packs (I'm looking forward to building elevated sections, and these combined with the elevation pack should be enough to line the walls and make setups like we saw in the DF sample pics. One example I came up with: www.dwarvenforge.com/mapmaker/shared?mapId=613db11af9eab25fcdfd57f65af37e37dc1187b0)
1 x Mushroom/Stalagmite/Chasm Packs (I have other options for the first two, but the DF pieces look great and will add variety. I wanted more chasm pieces to line the edge of raised sections)
4 x Floor Pack (To make large caverns, these extra floors are basically essential. I wish there were fewer Floor C and D, and more Floor A and B, but the large floors are perfect. I love how they incorporate elements from the other small floor tiles. This will be barely enough to fill in 5 base sets worth of wall pieces and make a single large 3' x 3' cavern/lair for a gargantuan nasty, like this: www.dwarvenforge.com/mapmaker/shared?mapId=e553c9df0aac8a256a603533b55c61313f8cae15)
2 x Wicked Additions (I haven't seen pics yet, but the pieces they've settled on sound amazing. I may give in and get even more depending on how they look)

PAINTED
4 x Narrow Dungeon Passage Pack (these look really useful for extra elevation and adding variety to dungeon setups.)
2 x Dungeon Passage Pack #1 (I'll be needing a fair number of these for long, straight passages)
1 x Dungeon Passage Pack #2 (These will probably see less use, but they add great flexibility that I don't want to miss out on)
2 x Dungeon Passage Pack #3 (I needed at least two for passage-heavy dungeons like this: www.dwarvenforge.com/mapmaker/shared?mapId=5e5efa3f238f9af959d9378077d1c9fc3844a566 I'll still need to make up more corner pieces myself using the diagonal pieces from the first kickstarter)
3 x Dungeon Passage Pack #4 (Playing around with the pieces, I used these more than anything else. 3 packs is barely enough for my needs, and I'll probably still have to sub in some #2 pack pieces and put up with the gaps sometimes)

As an international backer, I considered waiting on the add-ons to reduce my shipping costs. In the end, I decided I'd rather get them all now, just in case pack compositions change in the store like some of them did last time. I'll also get less wife aggro with them all arriving at once :p

If I'm missing anything, let me know!

Advice sought on which add-on packs are worthy of buying multiples. Any thoughts appreciated.

My plans and pledge changed a bit since my priginal post in this thread.

My buying parameters: Don't own any 3D Dungeon terrain. Dwarvenite made me take the plunge! I have neither the time nor skill to paint anything myself. Don't plan on prebuilding megadungeons often if ever, though would like the flexibility to prebuild a largish layout if desired. More pieces for my kids to play with is OK too.

Current pledge: 1500 (up from 1200 originally)

Current must-buys:

5 cavern sets (painted, as all the sets and packs will be)
2 Elevation Packs (largely for stairs as well as the other pcs)
2 Water Caverns (hugely versatile & cheapest per pc to boot)
1 of each of all other add-on packs EXCEPT chasms and large pedestals.

Stretch goals seem to give me enough chasm pieces for my needs and felt no need for large pedestals as I'm getting 2 elevation packs and have the capability to use foam or other materials to add elevation if necessary.

Current cost of above must-buys: 1300$
I've got 200$ (or a bit more if necessary) to add multiples of add-on packs.

I'm debating getting multiples of the following packs:

Lava Caverns and/or Lava River - These are supposedly not evergreen products, and I can't paint! I like lava environments. Will I regret not getting 2 of either or both of these? Probably yes.

Narrow Cavern Passages and/or narrow dungeon passages - As Teazla so aptly pointed out, these seem super versatile. Is it worth getting 2 packs of one or both? More than 2?

Dungeon Passage Pack #4 - People have noted that buying 2 of pack #4 along with 1 of each of the other passage packs allows you to use all the tiles at once. Is this really necessary if you're not planning on building megadungeons a lot? (I personally can't see using every single game tile every time) Is there a reason to get multiples of this pack otherwise?

Floor pack - I know floor packs are vital, but with 5 sets and 1 floor pack already, is 2 floor packs really necessary for any non-humongous builds? I guess if I wanted very open caverns it might be necessary...

Water caverns - Worth getting more than 2 instead of doubling the above?
Elevation packs - worth getting more than 2 instead of doubling the above?

Chasms - Worth getting if you've got stretch goals for 5 sets already? Can't see the versatility as much. For a long chasm I could go with straight edge look. Stretch goals give me enough pieces to make pools or small chasm edges and such. Any versatility I'm missing?

The other add-on packs seem specialized enough that one of each is sufficient.

----

Any thoughts on which add-on packs are worthy of multiplying would be immensely appreciated from veteran DF terrain users. Thanks.

Re:Cavern KS - Peer Pledge Review 6 Months ago
the only reason i am not getting lava painted is because painting lava doesn't frighten me. I was some, but not as much as a full add-on.

if lava is an environment you really like, i would spurge for them as they may be very few and far between after this first run.

if you want to use the t junctions (4) and the corners (4) at the same time you need 2 full packs of set 4. the extra 4 makes and X junction.

if you are going for passages it seems essential (unless you are also getting set 2 and don't mind having some beveling gaps between the walls). a set 4 and a set 2 together can mimic 2 set 4s.

Personally I am having trouble deciding whether to add all the dungeon passages or just getting them later in the store. i may sacrifice my pride and wallet to make sure they are available by christmas for my kids.

Re:Cavern KS - Peer Pledge Review 6 Months ago
i skipped out on the narrow caverns b/c for the most part (barring the trap) it was covered in the SG when I jumped from 3 sets to 5 sets. so that was my rational to drop them.

i picked 3 water... 2 will be water, and the last will be some lava, some slime, and possibly some dry river beds/difficult terrain...

I was using them as assistance for the floor packs. 1 have only 1 of them, as I might drop the 2nd one i pledged for to add the wicked add-on.

someone told me of all the dungeon tiles that the narrow dungeon passages where the best if I had to drop down to just one... I just might bite the bullet and add $200 more into the pledge manager. and new brushes. the 7 y.o. is suddenly interested in helping me paint the dungeons and I know he is going to want to help paint these... but don't want to give up my brushes... my wallet hates me.

Haha, I know the feeling. This fundafull pledge manager is a walletkiller. Juggling the add-on pack composition to fit inside the pledge total is hard enough with so many great options. Resisting the temptation to add money to the pledge is yet another issue to deal with :-),

Thanks a lot for your advice in the previous post. I was trying to talk myself out of some items, but I suppose I'll go in for 2 packs of Dungeon Passage #4.I may double up on Narrow Dungeon passages as well for the elevation effect. "Sigh" It's so tough to decide to go overbudget again, after already going overbudget on the KS pledge! I think many are facing that choice with the fundafull manager now live :-).

I am simply telling myself, "It's for the kids..."

It has been really useful to read so many peoples pledge plans. Ideas and concerns.
I have not 'got the answer' but in the end, this is what I settled on:

I have now gone over my budget of $1k (all in) - todays Fundafull link has basically enabled me to spread the costs over another month..... any reason to up my pledge total!

Rewards Selected:
1 x 5 Cavern Sets (Expertly Hand Painted) $620

Add-Ons Selected:
2 x Water Cavern Pack (Expertly Hand Painted) $140
2 x Chasm Pack (Expertly Hand Painted) $100
1 x Elevation Pack (Expertly Hand Painted) $90
1 x Mushroom Pack (Expertly Hand Painted) $40
1 x Narrow Dungeon Passage Pack (Expertly Hand Painted) $75

Changes:
From 3 sets to 5 sets - I found all those 'Add-ons' irresistible. The floor pack grew on me and so added one.
Dropped all the LAVA in the end as upon reflection I decided that the coloration was too different from the Den of Evil: Hellscape 1 & 2 Sets I already have.
I added Narrow Passage Pack for the Dungeon KS1 in the end. Only one that had a 'reasonable' piece to P&P ratio and I really want some of those new Triangle pie wedges...
Chasms back up to 2. (I just think I need to be able to make huge chasm set ups)
Roll on November :)
