TOPIC: Mosaic Tiles Warped
#57623
Mosaic Tiles Warped 10 Months ago
All of my mosaic tiles (3x2) are warped pretty bad.

Can't tell if the softer plastic shrunk over the hard plastic insert or if they just did a poor job of glueing in the insert.

In some spots the hard plastic is flush with the edge and in other spots it is inset.

Tried squeezing the two pieces flush but the glue won't give.

The left side is flush, the right is inset.

But I think there is shrinkage as well, it's sort of bowl shaped - a little sunken in the middle with the corners jutting up.

No significant issues found with other pieces yet, other than minor warping that is barely noticeable.

Still have nine sets to go.

If you press down on any one corner, the other three corners come off the table.

These tiles are still awesome and worth every penny. I look forward to buying many more sets in the future.

Just providing honest feedback, who knows maybe those pieces can be tweaked for future runs.

My big floor tiles were all slightly warped but not that badly.

I worked years ago for a company that made injection moulded plastic parts and a large void was a no-no.

As the plastic cools it shrinks and "pulls" towards the middle. A large void tends to pull the plastic in that direction which leads to warping.

In many respects this KS was a test run for Dwarvenite. Teething problems like this will be worked out for future releases.

Has anyone tried the old "soften in hot water, bend into shape, set with iced water" trick with dwarvenite yet? I have a warped door to fix.

I assume the hard plastic insert is supposed to be inset and flush to the roof of the tile.

As much as I hate the risk of ruining a piece, I think I may try ripping the insert out, cleaning the cavity, and reinserting it flush.

My thinking is that will straighten the bowl issue. Thoughts?

To my understanding some PVC glues actually bind to the PVC plastic to such an extent that it would be like ripping the material directly to separate them. Maybe Jeff or Stefan would be able to let us know what the glue type used is if we ask them?

The hot water shouldn't do anything to most PVC compatible glues and it should soften the piece without damaging it. I would have something flat and hefty on hand that you can get wet to sit on it while it is in hot water. Once it flattens I would then pour off the hot and slowly pour in cool water while the hefty object remains in place the whole time.

Whichever solution you pursue, good luck and please post results! I unfortunately do not have any large floor pieces so I can't offer any more insight than this...

My players rue the day I bought "Dragon Mountain". Ever since they give every creature a bit more respect. You never know when the GM will decide that this group is crafty...
