Game Tiles Review 1 Year, 1 Month ago
Here are my first impressions of the game tiles, after playing around with my tiles (6 painted base sets and 8 add-ons) for the past day.

Positives:
-The tiles are nice and durable, and I don't feel the need to handle them with kid gloves.
-I haven't had any major misalignment issues with the bases, which fit together well for the most part.
-All my doors were working correctly, which is something I was afraid of.

Negatives:
-The expertly painted tiles look nothing like the examples we were shown, and it appears the gray dry-brushing step has been skipped completely. This was a major disappointment, as they have a dingy brown color instead of the lighter, stone-like color of the ones presented to us. I did not expect a finish as good as the tiles painted by Stefan, but I did expect the same color scheme to be followed. I think I would have preferred to paint them all myself in hindsight.
-Some of the pieces I received were badly warped. The floor set tiles have improved after some work heating them with hot water and bending them myself, but are still not perfect, and some smaller pieces seem to be beyond saving (I have contacted DF about these).

Overall, I'm happy to have the tiles in hand, but feeling a little let down by the inconsistencies with what I was shown and what I received.

Post a picture... the other pictures I saw seemed to have a perfect match paint wise to what was displayed.

Here's a side-by-side of the tiles I received (left) and the "Expertly Painted" version image from the kickstarter (right).

I may be crazy, but I can't see any of the first gray dry-brushing layer. Come to think of it, the pictures from the factory that were posted in an early update seemed to show them skipping straight to painting the brown highlight stones as well. This results in a much darker look overall, which isn't quite what I'd hoped for.

That said, I do love the tiles themselves. It's just a shame that the paint scheme wasn't what was advertised.

Seems your pic is missing. I would like to see what the finished product looks like. i got dungeon grey to paint them myself, but i was considering purchasing painted sets in the future.

Though it doesn't show up for some reason, you should be able to view the picture by clicking the broken image link.

I think the game tiles are much darker that the examples we saw early on (I could be wrong) so it may not be the paint job it might be how the paint job looks on the darker tiles that were manufactured.

Either way they are darker that expected.

And we need to know not just for this KS but also for the caverns KS.

Looks like the image is fixed now. and yea, those are significantly darker than the ones shown. Not that they look bad. In fact i like them like that, they're just darker. i think the tiles from production came out darker than their test ones is why. mine are really dark, almost black. i guess the testing ones could have just gotten an extra base coat to make them lighter. Who knows. But it's good to know for future purchases.

as near as i can tell, the earlier pictures had a light and color issue, and the red background isnt helping them any. DF should really consider getting a professional photographer to make the pictures in their store look better.

you see a similar serious color difference in the COS rooms from actual pictures on a table compared to the original KS pictures. its mostly the light and choice of backdrop. remember, colors look different in poor lighting.

I never liked the paint jobs on the kickstarter, but I love the actual darker finished pieces that I am seeing pics of. I think they look way better!

I agree with Frog. The darker tones make it look more like stone to me.

Can you post a nice hi-res pic of these 3 pre-painted pieces...

1. Green Demon Door
2. Stone/Red Column (not COS column)
3. Large Free Standing Wall

Thanks!

If you saw my post from ~2 months ago comparing a set of the Stefan painted tiles with a set of the the castle add-on production models, you can see some of the same difference:

www.dwarvenforge.com/forum?func=view&catid=517&id=55303#55576

The one in the middle is the one Stefan painted, and as we discussed later in the thread he wasn't trying to match anything, but does look like it was a heavier drybrush at the end.

Having hand painted a few tiles (I'm in the video! :) ) I can say that, as always, a little dry brush goes a long way. The production models look 'kissed' with drybrushing and I think it looks perfect. If they had skipped teh drybrushing entirely the tile would look much "flatter" and I'm not seeing that in your photo. The ones Stefan did look a bit chalky to me (or perhaps dusty) which is another awesome look. I think I prefer the lighter amount of drybrushing, but that's purely a personal opinion.
