Re:Holy Polar Bears! - We have ICE CAVERNS coming!!!! 3 Months, 4 Weeks ago
I am going to wait for some pics of the dry brushing and might try a light touch of it. My wife has a northern campaign that she wants the ice for. Frog God is still working on the expansion of it now so it may be awhile. I am going to ask if they can make their maps more DF compatible as most of theirs are not which is one of the reasons mine sits so often. I mean, it is real tough to to 10'x15' or 15'x15' rooms even with AB I and II.

Instead of painting the bottoms of the pieces, why not put a few sheets of plain white paper on the table? Or go to the fabric store a buy a yard or two of white fabric? Either is simpler and much less permanent.

On the painting/highlighting front, how would a wash with a very thin solution of light blue look on transparent pieces? Maybe not as light as sky blue, but certainly lighter than true blue.

I use ink washes on my torches and they turn out quite nice.

I think I'll do some tests with some translucent thick gel to get a better idea and post the results here.

Over on the Reaper forum, many painters have excellent results from the Tamiya clear paints. Maybe the blue here would be of interest.

You can make those lines better by drybrushing the piece with one simple light drybrushing of white or bluish white...easy and does not take long...the whole set would take maybe 10-20 minutes....but then you sacrifice a bit of the transparency I suppose if you wish to shoot light through them...the trick is doing it really, really lightly....

Thanks for the follow-up Stefan. I may still get some ice caverns down the line, but I'd probably want to paint the outer walls and base bottoms in regular cavern colors, then do some white or pale blue drybrushing on top to enhance the ice effect. I'll experiment with some clear resin of my own, and see if that would help the issues I was worried about.

I can confirm that clear Tamiya paints look awesome on translucent pieces. You'd probably want to thin the clear blue out so it didn't look too smurfy, though. I've been using a few drops of clear green and clear blue in the plain clear Tamiya acrylic to simulate puddles of water, and it works great.

For those that are looking to paint their caverns into ice caves but aren't getting the ice-nite or want to create transition pieces check out this youtube video on making ice bases. The concept should scale to the 2x2 scale of caverns.

It seems her lava tutorial would work most excellent for lava rooms.

What other cavern pieces are on everyones wish list for dwarvenice? I am hoping for stalagmites and the stalagtite arches and the wicked addition double high pillar. Honestly I would love all the cavern sets in dwarven ice.

I would wish for DF to add the pieces below in ice.

All the stalagtite arches and the bridge

The other two non-water pot Stalagmites

All Chasm pieces

I want the Chasm pieces for ice sheets on top of normal floors, ice floats on lakes and of course ice Chasm pieces.

I like the idea of using the ice caverns as the heart of a cold spot in a cavern but using the above parts in a ice cavern or mixed in normal caverns to show the transitions of cold.
