Holy Polar Bears! - We have ICE CAVERNS coming!!!! 5 Months, 2 Weeks ago
This was originally posted in the "Updates about restocking" thread and i decided it warranted it's own thread to explode with peoples excitement....

Just saw this on Stefan's Facebook... Ice Tiles

This was followed by me suggesting that we wait until John lit them up with LED's and Jackattack reminding me that Biowizard posted instructions on how to make an illuminated gaming surface so you could make them REALLY glow... That original thread is here:

www.dwarvenforge.com/forum?func=view&catid=3&id=53383

It has been awfully quiet around here. I think many folks went into a self induced coma just to make the wait time for the caverns shipment go by faster. This should jolt some folks back into the world of the living!

Its been to Quiet Kitenerd.... So I will"SHOUT THIS"

"STEFAN THOSE ARE SUCH COOL ICE TILES"

OK....back to normal insanity.

Kitenerd.... I think this deserved it's own Posting anyway.

As to the Restocking Post.... It's old news until they get stocked.

PS.. Glad you got excited as i did seeing the clear cavern piece.

Okay, I know nothing about chemistry or materials science, so excuse me if this is a dumb question.

Would an acid wash (such as a glass etching kit) allow an enterprising modder to create a frosted surface effect on these pieces? The floor would be easiest, but the stalactites/icicles on the walls might be cool.

jackattack - Because this is likely still just PVC, I think you'd want to avoid using an actual acid bath. But you could probably get the look you want by drybrushing and/or inking. Yeah, a light drybrushing would probably give you the frosted look you're talking about.

The acid works to create microscopic pitting in the glass. I'd try 000 or 0000 steel wool instead.

Btw, good mod idea. :-)

AWESOME.

Stefan go big right away with all the needed sets!

Ice Elevation
Ice chasm (oh man....chasm pieces can work at icebergs in a lake)
Ice stalagmite/cicle
Jagged Icicle floor pack
Narrow Passage ...with giant rolling ice ball ;)
Vanilla Ice Ice Baby Wicked Edition

The chasm and floors area MUST for me, I can see myself wanting it all.
What would people like to see in a wicked additions set?
Archways
tunnels
transition walls

jchunick,

Thank you.

That is a startlingly clear material. It's gorgeous, but I think that the color of the table surface beneath it will greatly affect its appearance.

This is what i am talking about... Fertile minds throwing around interesting ideas!

I love the idea of using acid or a solvent of some sort to frost some of the surfaces. We'll need pieces in hand to experiment with, but hopefully we will find something that we can apply gingerly with a brush to "highlight" some surfaces. That combined with adding a wash to deepen the shadows should produce some really cool effects. My thinking is if you do a neutral wash then it would work regardless of color scheme.

I am excited to experiment with this... i'll add it to my list. LEts see... paint a few dozen minis, make pools for my COS, paint my alternate scheme DF game tiles, paint all of Elye's gates, build an LED illuminated gaming surface... THEN mod some Ice Caverns! Thats it there is officially no time for parenting or home renovation. I'll be forced to sell the house. Anybody want any children? Will sell outright or trade for DF.

I'll make sure to buy lots of Clear PVC pieces... AND use them on my LED table. I'm glad my idea to pour clear PVC into PVC/Dwarvenite molds finally found the light of day, pun intended! Sweet!

SOOOO glad I ordered Elye's Ice Cavern entrance unpainted... Now I can light the whole mess up with LEDs, too... Of course, now I'm already thinking that Stefan should make transition pieces, especially if he's just repurposed the Corner "A" mold- is it possible to do stone floors w/ ice walls or stalagmites? That would make it easier to use the water packs for frozen (not-quite-frozen-enough) rivers and lakes...
