I don't think Stefan would have shown it as translucent casting if he thought the factory could only do an opaque casting, but confirmation would be nice.

I'm thinking that a light diluted wash in a slightly darker blue might enhance the visual texture of the piece. But that should be left as a mod for the customer, not as a factory paint job.

This brings up some interesting questions. Is it possible to make the PVC cast clear or translucent. Can you imagine the opportunity for ice and lava caves if this is possible.

Stefan has bent over backwards to make this a great set. I can not wait to see more.

Kitenerd, I was not proposing making the waterfall Dungeon Gray: I think it's totally cool that it can be made translucent and that DF is willing to do so, as it opens up so many possibilities. I'm proposing that it not have color added to the translucent casting material, as that way we would all have the options of leaving it colorless, adding a colored wash to make it the translucent color of our choice, or painting over it for an opaque finish.

Some of us had a discussion on this topic not too far back in the KS comments, so you can read more in-depth arguments there if you wish.

My opinion is those that don't want it painted should get unpainted sets like the rest of the KS rather than force those paying for painted to paint their own.

My personal experience with the Translucent materials from the Bones line haven't been very good. The material isn't good enough looking on its own to be left as-is, and the material is hard to paint convincingly while retaining the translucent qualities. Some people can certainly do it, but the skill bar is higher to get a passable result than an opaque version. I've seen A LOT of terrible translucent bones minis.

That's my opinion. For whatever that's worth.

Other than an extra 2 base sets I got everything painted. I would definitely not want unpainted waterfalls. As to if it's clear and then washed with a translucent color or the color is infused into the dwarvenite I don't care either way as long as it looks good. I definitely would not be happy if I received unpainted ones.

I have to agree 100% on this one. I have paid for painted because I don't paint. I would hope that even the waterfall would be useable out of the box, lighter or darker blue either one.

Personally, my biggest preference is that the waterfall match the water tiles as much as possible so that they go together well. I paid for painted sets because my painting backlog is too big to justify more unpainted merchandise right now.

My players rue the day I bought "Dragon Mountain". Ever since they give every creature a bit more respect. You never know when the GM will decide that this group is crafty...

I can do a passable simple paint job on the tiles, but painting water like this is beyond my skill-set so I ordered all painted water.

I've been inquiring for a long time about the possibility of casting translucent PVC and the possibility of doing a translucent ice cavern set. It would be nice if we could get an official answer on this.

As for painted... if the translucent would look better with a wash to bring out details (it would), i would expect the painted versions to come like that. We all COULD do it (super easy) but thats what the extra $15 is for. I paid for the right to not HAVE to do it, so i hope they enable my lazy! ;)

I'll go back to my original point that this single piece gives DF a great opportunity to figure out the learning curve of translucent without too much risk. If all goes smooth, pandoras box is open. If it is a nightmare and hugely costly, they give up, cast it in gray dwarvenite (thats what we thought we were getting when we pledged) and paint it... lesson learned.

I hope it is a simple and cost effective success. I would love to see add on's and potentially whole sets (Ice Caverns, Crystal Palace, City of Atlantis, Sci-fi EVERYTHING...) of translucent pieces, but i doubt very seriously that DF will commit to or promise anything until they see how this one piece works out.

I do find it interesting that you have asked and inquired about translucent PVC for pieces such as ice cavern set and I have for items like water in sewers and water in caves and never have I seen Stefan or Jeff even hint one way or the other. Perhaps they are playing their cards close or perhaps they just have not read the dozen or so times it has come up. Who knows maybe this waterfall is as other have said, the test run to see how it works.

Good point about the translucent piece perhaps leading to more translucents.

I hope it does.
