The mats are crap in comparsion to DF 3D terrain and the other is resin.

I am so spoiled by the Dwarvenite that they aren't really an option (and if there will be a medieval building set in Dwarvenite, I am ditching my resin sets).

Medieval Buildings for KS3 FTW!

I don't think there's really a comparison to be made. They serve different and very specific functions. If you were going to use one of the mats that had a map of a dungeon on it, let's say, then you could compare and I would even agree.

However, what I'm clearly talking about in the context of this thread are mats as grid'ed stand-ins for terrain such as grassland or cobblestones, etc. Tiles would be entirely impractical in covering a similarly large surface just to represent terrain... in fact, the cost of it just to represent terrain becomes comically excessive when comparing to a mat in use in a fantasy game setting... jackattack's very concise point that outdoor terrain being the same as negative space should be enough for most people to understand why there are better solutions.

The resin Tabletop World buildings are absolutely beautiful, and while I'm not keen on resin either because I am klutzy and have kids, to boot, there is no comparison between them and DF tiles either. The two are used for different purposes entirely. In fact, I am just at the beginning of getting into miniature building and plan on building a modest town with various building models from various companies. If or when DF creates medieval buildings I'll be using them during play for buildings/spaces that are important parts of the game because I'll have much more room to lay out the scene I want. Both the buildings and the DF stuff will co-exist and if I do it right then they will successfully.

I love the idea of having a DF catacomb and ossuary pieces. From the typical skull wall, arched shelf with linen wrapped bodies, temple like places with urns & candles...to the creepy displays like they have in Capuchin Catacombs in Italy.

Regarding roofs for sewers, I don't see how that is any more viable than roofs for MBS.

Roofs only work for layouts with fixed dimensions in one if not both horizontal axes. Thus, the roof pieces either limit the floor plan to fit the roof pieces, or there have to be so many different sizes of roof pieces that the cost and inventory space required become prohibitive very quickly.

Unless you are creating dioramas that are open on one side, you can't see the interior of the covered layout to appreciate the artistic merits of the interior/underside of the roof/ceiling pieces. Once removed they serve no purpose.

Small accessories and freestanding walls aside, I really don't see the point in buying DF pieces I can't put a mini on.

I think modular arched roof sections could be inverted to also provide a second type of tunnel for sewers and might be very versatile and add variety to the builds.

Since I have been talking about sewers for over nine months it is obvious I want Sewers really bad. But even more than getting sewers in Dwarvenite for myself I want DF to have a really good 3rd KS, because I want DF to have a 4th KS and 5th KS and so on and so on. So I hope Stefan gives me Sewers in Dwarvenite in the best way he can to make a successful 3rd KS. Oh and by the way a successful 3rd KS could make a lot less money and have less backers than KS1 or KS2 and still be successful. Sooner or later it will happen and we need to not call a $1,000,000 or even a $500,000 KS a failure.

I just found were Stefan talked about Sewers as a KS

It sounds like you are suggesting a sort of sewer passage piece, a single piece with a "U" cross section that more or less mirrors the sewer tunnel below it.

Given the size restrictions on GameTiles, I still don't see how these can cover anything other than a 2"(+/-) wide sewer tunnel, nor how it aesthetically enhances the sewer tunnel it covers when you can't see through it.

while I like the idea of roofs, the need for them in my gaming style is low.

here is a link to a crafter/artist who make and sells roof compatible with DF (they are awesome looking) www.dwarvenforge.info/toits/toits.htm

you can find these on Ebay also. While they are beautiful pieces ,they have two issues; covers the buildings and cost. at current cost of about $5.56 per 2x2 tile. it would be pretty expensive.

now more math for comparison, resin cavers are about $2.79 per 2x2 piece (i know the are a 4x4 piece and I did the math already.) in KS2 painted cavers 2x2 tiles (with stretch goals) were 1.71 per piece or about 61% of the resin cost. if the roofs were made in dwarvennite were comparable, they would be about $3.40 per 2x2 coverage.

while I am sure DF could come up with a way to make it a bit cheaper, roofs would still a expensive proposition.

i should not be allowed around calculators after 10pm :D

Have to admit, Sewers does nothing for me, so I probably get a KS off if DF goes that way. What I am pretty psyched for would be ruins pieces stylistically compatible with the existing Dungeons set, so that I can use the Ruins pieces entirely or in combination with Dungeons pieces to make varying degrees of damaged dungeons.

After that, most of what I'm after are more accent pieces than an entire new library of base tiles. I won't put it past Stefan to make amazing new sculpts that get me hooked.

Ruins would make an awesome add on set. As would accent pieces: traps, bookshelves, pools, grates, barred/boarded up doors, etc. this list is endless.

So what i am hearing from Lork is that he REALLY wants the ability to buy add ons without buying base sets ;)

I have no interest in medieval buildings. I'd prefer the focus stay on dungeon settings like KS1 and KS2.

I realize each has their own style of play, but dungeon crawling is so much a part of the game that I just don't see the practical application for buildings. In my group I *might* pull something like that out once or twice a year and that wouldn't justify the cost or time in painting.

Personally, I'd like to see sewers that are compatible with KS1 and add further value to that set or catacombs.

Again, just my 2cp.

One of the developers at Paizo (James Jacobs, I think) once said that his definition of "Dungeon" (for the purposes of "Dungeon Crawling") was any sort of place with defined spaces and combat encounters. This includes actual dungeons, caves, sewers, castles, houses, or any other kind of environment.

Just as examples of "dungeons" where a medieval building set would be useful for me, I've recently run the following (bonus points if anyone can name the adventure paths I'm running):
-A haunted manor, filled with ghosts and other undead.
-A keep overrun with ogres, where the top floor was wooden.
-Longhouses with giants in them.
-A farmhouse and barn, with more of those nasty ogres.
-A sawmill full of cultists.

That's what I can remember off the top of my head, and I know there's more coming in future adventures.

I totally get that some people don't use buildings in their games, and that's fine, but a lot of people do use them, even people who focus primarily on the dungeon crawl aspect of the game. In the adventures I run, probably around half of the "dungeons" are actually buildings. Some are stone, but lots of them are made of wood. The practical application in my games would be huge.

Again, not saying your wrong or anything, just pointing out that medieval buildings and dungeon crawling aren't mutually exclusive.

I'm also saying I want medieval buildings. :P

Looking at the list of areas that I just made, I realized two things.

First, that's actually only one adventure path. I didn't end up listing anything from the other one I'm running right now. :P There have definitely been buildings in that one too, though.

Second, many of the buildings I have encounters in are more like the PSOM "Barn" set (all wooden) than the Medieval Building set. So I would have a lot of use for a set like that as well.

I would have to say I would opt out of a medieval buildings KS. I don't see myself using something like that enough to make the investment I have in these last two KSs.

Ruins, maybe if they were done in such a way to allow me to integrate them into my exisiting tiles.

Catacombs how ever would really be a Wallet Drain on me. I would buy in for sure.

And as kiltedyaksman wrote, a sewers KS that are compatible with KS1 would bring my support as well.
