TOPIC: Rivers & Lakes
#63119
Re:Rivers & Lakes 5 Months, 1 Week ago
Thinking more about it, I think Stefan came out with this design so that we could put 2 corner chasm pieces or 4 straight chasm pieces within the same 2*2 square/footprint, hence the need for the 45 degrees beveled ends. I think this decision comes from the need to reduce the number of necessary pieces for that Set and/or to allow building of floor cracks. I unfortunately think this decision is a compromise on quality of what ultimately could be a much better Chasm Set. Why not get rid of the third protruding pieces then? We could build something similar with 2 corner pieces anyway. I think chasm pieces would be looking much better with a minimal width of about 1/2 inch and their ends fully flush with each together (not touching by only a corner on most occasions), as with the original MasterMaze/Resin Chasm Set.

These are the 3 pieces I suggest would be a better system (drawn quite fast):

The third piece I suggest is making a "concave turn" and is out of the 2"*2" footprint. This is not a problem for layout as chasm pieces are built next to emptiness.

Bio, your picture actually shows 4 pieces, unless the tiles can be flipped.

I had to stare at what he wrote for about 10 minutes, but I'm pretty sure the 2x2 floor with the 2 mirrored pieces on it is one big piece. Which means I think he actually meant to say "convex turn".

I do like the look of the design, but I feel like it might be too late to make dramatic changes. Maybe I'm wrong though.

I am excited about the chasm pack - huge bang for the buck. I was taken aback a bit by how jagged it is, but i decided Stefan was going for a "crumbling into the abyss" look as opposed to "weathered shoreline" They do seem a bit incongruous with the rest of the caverns set which is very organic. Still I am definitely in for one set. Was planning to get two but the number of pieces is so high i don't think it will be necessary. We'll see when they readjust the ratios to add the fourth piece. I hope they loose mostly pointy pieces, a few of those go a long way.

I like the current pieces in the chasm set, partly because they don't have the 'flush side edge' component to them.
This map shows what I was able to do with the chasm pieces and I like the possibilities, especially since as they are you don't HAVE to make a continuous section of them, but could have them spaced out. The attached jpg file I have circled areas that could not be created if they had the 'flush side edge' component to them.

Granted, I am mostly envisioning these pieces for chasms and not necessarily as a lake/river alternate. For those wanting a shoreline aspect, I would agree with Biowizard's suggestions, as they would help recreate shoreline. I would hope, however, that it won't mean discarding the chasm pieces Stefan has already created and made available as part of the kickstarter. I think these chasm pieces will have utility alongside the Dungeon tiles as well as the Cavern Tiles.

To be clear, I am proposing 3 pieces. The third "concave" piece is concave in regards to the chasm, not to the ledge:

What I am suggesting is a design that allows rivers and chasms not to look like this:

It is purely an aesthetic preference from me and I know Stefan very probably has considered this option and weighed against it for the slightly increased versatility of the present chasm Set. I see this as the same "problem" of notches in the outside wall of passages made entirely from pieces of the Passage Pack #2, I just prefer not to have notches between every piece...

Perhaps a solution could be to give up production of the third piece of the present chasm Set (the one that is a triangle that does not add to the "geometrical" possibilities of layouts) to replace it with my Piece #1 (Straight) and perhaps Stefan's planned 4th piece could be my Piece #2 (Corner) so that we would get a Set with both ultimate versatility AND beauty? In this scenario, my Piece #3 (Concave chasm) would be done by 2 straight pieces from the present Chasm Set...

I think the current pack can still be used to good effect, and has the advantage of being simple and extremely modular. It excels more at representing chasms than other negative space uses, but you can still put together all sorts of setups. It will be even better with the additional quarter circle chasm piece that Stefan is working on.

Nice maps Himajin - i like what you have done. They do illustrate how few of the big pointy piece we need. Those pieces are so distinct they draw your eye so a few go a LONG way. I am hoping that when the 1/4 rounds get added they drop the pointy pieces down to 2 or 3 - i would rather lose them then curves or straights.

Bio - i agree that a long straight river would look silly with chasm pieces (NES comment was perfect!) but i would always meander the river anyway

Don the Dime - super unique combinations of chasm pieces, makes me want to have them in my hands to play with even more - thanks!

...ok as we are chipping in. I will start with I like the Chasm pack, it is great as it is.
I too feel that the 'Triangle' piece is rather abrupt.... But I am sure it will have its uses.

If I could 'choose' what more i would like - I would go for more 'straight' piece variations.
I am seriously considering 'Cutting' some of the corner chasms in half.... (along the corner diagonal.
One corner = 2 new Straights... Sure the edge would need roughing up a bit and some re-painting, but this way I get more straights with a nice variety.

Now IF Stefan does as a 4th piece and double checks the 'Triangle' I think it goes from great to amazing.
