Re:Caverns Kickstarter - Wish List 1 Year ago
I really hope the cavern pieces don't get wasted on weird things like "spider web covered walls" for use in extremely specific and limiting situations. It instantly becomes a worthless piece if you aren't using some type of spider creature. Stefan should focus on vesatile, diverse, natural rock walls that go together nicely and don't look overly repetitive when used together. We can stretch cotton or something over the sculpted/painted walls ourselves on an as-needed basis...

I would not want "spider web covered walls" to be part of the KS right away but if when the KS gets above 2.5 million I would love to have wall variety including "spider web covered walls". 10 spider web walls could be used through out a cavern system to add variety or all used in one cavern to show a spider lair.

At $10,000 per mold, 10 web pieces would be $100,000 worth of molds. Doesn't that seem excessive for something very niche?

I believe it's more like three web pieces would be a single mold at $10K, for very atmospheric pieces that will break up the repetition of long stretches of blank cavern walls.

10 of the same web pieces, not 10 different web pieces is what I was thinking.

Also I think just because a few walls have spider webs does not require a spider encounter but that is just my thinking.

I just don't see those things as very useful - beyond my not having a personal interest in webs, etc.

I really think it should be more focused on things like:
Multiple sculpts of walls, floors, dead end/alcove, natural stairway, etc
Free Standing walls, stalagmites, rock formations, etc.
Sculpted shorelines for shores & chasms, etc

And really stray away from esoteric pieces:
Sci-Fi/Steam stuff, pipes, control consoles, etc
Walls with spider webs, fossils, etc

It's best to have pieces that can be used anywhere. Example: If they make a wall that has a dinosaur skeleton in it - you are going to end up with MANY walls with the exact same skeleton embedded when you buy your sets... and it's either going to look repetitive (or you just end up not using those pieces?) I think the caves can look more "natural" if Stefan just made like 4+ variants of each "straight wall", "corner wall", or "floor".

Think versatility and using the tiles over the years for multiple campaigns and modules...

The title of the thread is "Caverns Kickstarter - Wish List". And when all of the requisite structural pieces are done -- like straight walls and corners and passages and alcoves and stalagmites -- I wish for a couple of pieces that include spider webs.

They don't have to be part of the sculpt. They can be freestanding accessories, or clip-ons, or whatever Stefan and crew come up with. Or maybe someone here will post an alternative that works better.

They don't even have to be part of the kickstarter. If it isn't what people want, or what DF offers, that's fine. It was just an idea.

But I would appreciate it if you could phrase your objections without resorting to loaded language like "wasted", "weird", and "worthless".

Jack, I'm not trying to argue or fight with you, nor am I saying those things as a personal attack. I'm sorry if you are offended by my saying a-typical things like: cryo-tubes, generators, or pieces of walls with dials and gauges are going to be essentially 'wasted/worthless' pieces for the majority of users interested in caverns, who are probably fantasy gamers. But what person playing D&D is going to be able to use 10 generators if they buy 10 cavern sets (with any amount of regularity)? Expedition to Barrier Peaks is a weird and rare occurrence, right? I think that is the most diplomatic way I could put it?

Webs as a clip-on accessory or something? Eh, maybe, yeah sure. I can see that.

I didn't read the whole thread but for gnerators... I don't know what Id use a single generator for but a handful of this style of tech could be very useful. I mean what is the generator gonna power if there is no more tech to go with it? A steampunk dressing set including a generator would be very cool. When it comes to webs, that's up there with exra stalagmites in usefulness for caves. However you could simply use some Halloween webbing and it would look freakin awesome, prolly way better than a resin web could ever look

That's why we have add-ons, and Wicked Additions. So that people who want esoteric have a chance to get it, and those who don't want esoteric don't have to. Some lines, however, have pieces that some are very enthusiastic about, but others are not. We rely on DF to make their own decisions about how many of what pieces to put in any set.

For example, I think there are too many LED fireplaces in each Catacombs I set. Others disagree. I am free to buy as many or as few as I like, or to sell and trade my "extras" as I see fit. But when I wrote about it, I expressed my opinion in terms of my preferences and my gaming needs, not the merits of the piece or the packaging decision.

I'm not disputing your right to express your opinion, I'm asking you to be polite when you do so. You did not simply state your individual preference, you called another forum user's idea, in an open-ended "let's all share our wild ideas" thread, by some highly charged terms. We try to be more polite on these forums.

Personally I think some mad scientist type gear would be awesome, like Frankenstein style or something. A single generator by itself not so much but a whole set of that stuff including the generator would be great
