Re:Caverns Kickstarter - Wish List 1 Year ago
Is it possible/allowed to have an add-on with its own funding minimum?

If, for example, the kickstarter was all generic cavern sets and had an overall funding goal of $X, could there be a sci-fi add-on with its own separate funding goal of $Y? That would allow the funds for developing the add-on separate, and it would allow DF to drop the add-on if it doesn't generate enough orders (and keep it from reducing the profitability of the kickstarter).

I realize it might be easier to do cavern add-ons (sci-fi, fantasy, or any other genre) as a separate kickstarter, but i think it is unlikely that DF will hold such a specific sales event anytime in the foreseeable future, if ever. Not with multiple lines they can convert to GameTiles, new resin sets on the drawing board, and expansion into painting supplies.

The problem with making sci-fi pieces as an add-on to a cavern set, is that you may end up with too few people selecting that add-on to make it worthwhile. That would eat into the funding for the project without benefiting most of the backers (and without providing much of a boost to the total to get to the next stretch goal).

I think it would be best to stick to one core theme for each kickstarter. For example, as much as I'd like to see dungeon passage pieces rolled into the caverns kickstarter, I don't think that would be healthy for the project as a whole.

I agree sticking to one core theme would be healthy for the project.

I think the caverns KS is going to need to stay very on target at least at the start. Caverns need way more variety of pieces, I would think a pledge goal of $250,000 would allow for better variety in caverns, where $50,000 was ok as a pledge goal for dungeon walls.

Lots of stuff going on...

First, Sci-fi: I get the impression that this was not one of the more successful lines in DF history (i may be wrong, but most sets are still available and that speaks volumes). Not sure that many of us would have use for sci-fi cavern pieces, although i admit they would be VERY cool. I expect this might fall more in the realm of talented folk custom building and hacking existing pieces. I would not be opposed to a sci-fi cavern add on, but probably wouldn't purchase it. Kind of too bad because there have been some REALLY cool sci-fi setups on the forums lately.

Second, cost: I agree with kodiakbear that the Caverns present some sculpting challenges that Dungeons do not. (if you don't understand this, spend 5 minutes sketching out tile ideas on paper, suddenly your brain will hurt and you will realize that caverns require many more tile designs than dungeons) Sadly, that means that stretch goals won't kick in until later. I think this presents an opportunity for all of us to spend more in order to unlock more stretch goals. I am already saving ;)

Third, design ideas: Lots of good stuff out there. Kudos to Legendox, i love his idea of platforms at the top of walls, gives the kobold archers a place to hide and makes stacking tiles easier. His raised walkway works as both an archway and a free floating walkway, lots of cool things i can see doing with that either free standing or supporting higher structures, i really hope Stefan printed out that post ;) Plus he has the rolling ball trap! I would love to see an add-on cavern traps pack, lots of potential here and several good ideas bandied about.

And lastly, another random design idea - what about a buried door? Looks like a dead end, but remove some debris and it is a transition into a dungeon! We have had lots of ideas for getting from the dungeon to the cave, but what about a secret dungeon entrance our heros can find in the back of the cave?

Keep the great ideas coming i always love to see what people come up with!

If it's not popular, it's not popular. But I'll point out that a set with a major thematic departure from the first DF kickstarter did extremely well.

I like the idea of ledges on some of the straight walls and corners, but there are a couple of questions to consider:

One, will metal molds allow for anything other than an L-shaped cross section?

Two, are you giving up the squares beneath the ledge in favor of squares on top of the ledge?

Here's another idea "out of the blue"...

I know Stefan said that the 4*4 design was impossible due to production capacities. Is it still the case if all the walls were to be made free from the floor pieces? i.e. Only free-standing walls!?! I know a 4*6 floor piece is doable as per the Game Tiles first kickstarter. If a 4*4 corner wall is possible due to the PVC/Dwarvenite mold constraints, I hope Stefan has carefully considered that option as 4" long walls would probably look more natural than 2" long ones.

Just spit-balling, but perhaps a "Mines" theme might be viable. I'm thinking caverns but with a mine theme.

Free standing walls are very useful, but I think if the entire line was free standing walls, it would be too fiddly.

If I am not mistaken, the pieces that have walls on them have two squares partial obscured already, by the wall. so my ledge idea would actually give you the full 1x2 squares back, just raised in the air.

So... yes, but no :)

Kitenerd, Thanks for the compliment. wasn't sure the ideas were well received or not. Thought they might have gotten lost in the Sci-Fi talk.

+1 to the idea of walls with top ledges. (This would also mesh nicely with the idea I mentioned earlier, some system for creating multi-level caverns by placing floor tiles-- 4x6 like the big ones in the first KS, if possible-- on top of suitable wall sections, which these certainly would be.)

+1 also to the idea of 4" freestanding walls (if possible).

At this point I still believe that there will be 2"x2" floor tiles without walls as part of the caverns KS.

Can they have patterns on both sides with the mold machine technology that the manufacture uses, If so different patterns on each side would allow more variety.

I believe that would double the cost of the molds for floor tiles without walls.
