I agree a futuristic add-on set is a great idea. Reach out for those players also, for minimal investment of resources.

I think a cave mouth would be an outstanding idea, ala the Ancients set.

Also, as someone who doesn't have a cavern set I'd like some that closely resemble the resin sets.

I agree with kiltedyaksman I have yet to get my hands on any caverns/lake sets they are either out when I want them or or I am out of money and the two have yet to coincide so I would really like something close to the resin sets. With enough caverns and regular game tiles I will never have to worry about setting up a dungeon again I cant wait!!

So I apologize for the quality of both the sketch and the photo. Just snapped a pic with my phone after I hurriedly sketched these out in like 2 minutes. Just wanted to get them out of my head.

Here are my thoughts of some neat things to add into KS2: Caverns

1. Transition Tile from dungeon set to "hidden" caves. Could be more uniform, my sketch is some what representative of an explosion.

2. This would be equivalent to cave pillars connected by rock, ground down to a 1x1 path supported by the pillars. option of a mine trolly track would be awesome as well. So many thoughts about how I could use the mine cart in a large cavern.

3. This is a standard cave wall tile (2x2) with a 1x2 ledge at the top of of the wall. Basically allowing the "enemies to come out of lairs." Great for archers in caves. so much potential for a natural rounded sloped up stair case to make caves dual level with this piece

4.Free standing wall with a hole in it. Allowing transition into caverns behind book shelves when placed over dungeon tiles, or stacked on the ledge wall (my no.3) cave lair to shoot from.

5. This is a dream/hope. Man made luge, about 1x4 that would allow a boulder (1.5x1.5) to be placed on it. The kid in me wants to see a rogue fail a trap pick and see this thing rolling at them.

Anyway... my two cents.

The problem with adding Sci-fi pieces in as bonuses is for many (I would be willing to bet a majority, they would be almost worthless. I know I don't run sci-fi and have no interest at all in such pieces. For many it would almost prove a disincentive to have such pieces.

Something like that really would need to be a separate KS or at the very least an add-on so those of us that have no interest don't get stuck with a bunch of unwanted pieces. For the Sci-fi fans, you might end up with 30 fantasy pieces and 3 sci-fi pieces, which probably isn't what they want either. (Just made up amounts there)

Just my opinion of course.

Cavern pieces are not inherently fantasy-themed. They are generic/universal to every genre.

Ideally, all of the core and incentive pieces in a cavern kickstarter would be non-genre specific. However, if DF thinks that a particular item (set) needs to be included in the core/incentive in order to meet production minimums for the factory, that's where they will be. Rather than considering it to be a "disincentive", it might be thought of as something you can trade for other gaming items.

I think all genre-specific items (sets) could be included in the kickstarter as add-ons under "not everyone wants that" logic. (I stayed out of the Reaper kickstarter because for every mini I liked, I'd've had ten I didn't.) Some people might not want fantasy-themed items like iron seals set in natural stone, or monster nests, or dwarf mines. The same people might consider those to be disincentives.

As long as genre-themed pieces are done in a way that they can be added or removed seamlessly, there is room in the kickstarter for all kinds of themed sub-sets. I would prefer that they be done as add-ons (which was one of the suggestions in my post) because that is a better measure of the demand for that particular theme, and it allows backers to get as many or few genre-specific items as they want.

There used to be a fair number of posts by people asking for more sci-fi sets (new and restock), but they gradually died down. Sci-fi gamers who come to the website may also be put off by the overwhelming ratio of fantasy sets over sci-fi sets. A kickstarter is a good place to take a quick read on demand for sci-fi themed pieces, whether as an add-on for something so generic it is universal to all genres or in a kickstarter of its own.

the real problem with scifi, is that it has a much larger range of styles than fantasy does, and often includes the jungle temple as well. simple things like pipes and grates makes sense, in a way.

wishlist- do another alternate-paint room like the chamber of sorrows. Cavern of Sorrows! maybe do a slime-green cavern section, complete with 'pool' (perhaps set between chasm ledges). or perhaps the blood-soaked cavern that lies below those grates.

perhaps an 'ice cavern' color scheme add-on? just the basic pieces, in a new color to fit in with the ice cavern set. or maybe even make a per-set color choice option for the kickstarter. if we can choose multiple color schemes for our sets, that would probably increase overall sales of painted sets.

Yeah I'm not a science fiction gaming fan. I'd prefer to see core sets relatively time period agnostic. Caverns, even more than the original GT, should work well in many environments. Fantasy is a given, but I can easily see them working for asteroids, Starship Troopers style bug-warrens, smuggler's caches, etc. Have some science-fiction themed addons would be a great way to check the demand for such and to hopefully pull in more backers. In order to not feeling condescending to them, it might need to be more than just one token addon pack, which then starts to get into the "annoying" range for the people who don't want them. Its a fine line, I trust Jeff and Stefan to find a path through it through.

I like this idea a lot! While having different colored, pre-painted caverns may not be feasible, I think making the colors available in Pokorny Paints would be amazeballz. The amount of unpainted sets ordered probably would be multiplied by the number of color schemes available: ice, lava, swamp, 'natural', bio-luminescent, etc.

+1 for the idea of sci fi addon sets! The versatility of caverns is what really interests me in them.

While I wish we DF could make every single item we could ever possibly want, we have to deal with the realization that DF is a small business being run in a weak economy. The Sci-Fi resin lines (though HIGHLY sought after by those who like them) aren't terribly popular. So if DF were to make these "Sci-Fi add-ons", they would be sinking thousands of dollars into making the molds, using up sculpting time, factory time, container space & warehouse space when all of those resources could be better utilized on more popular items.

Perhaps the answer to this is a Sci-Fi specific Kickstarter at some point in the future to serve this small but passionate sub-set of the DF fanbase, with a "pre-order only" system for restocks (as I've seen mentioned on these boards before) so DF can reprint without getting stuck with too much stock sitting on warehouse shelves. This would keep the line alive, serve the fans aching for more Sci-Fi items and limit DF's risk in the process.

With kickstarter, they would have to risk designing the set, but they would know how many they need before orders are done and molds made. Setting a minimum number of orders should work also.
