TOPIC: Caverns Kickstarter - Wish List

Re:Caverns Kickstarter - Wish List 1 Year, 1 Month ago
First off to address sci fi. The point of this thread (way back when) was to discuss ideas for Cavern Stretch Goals. About the same time someone posted a thread with amazing pictures of sci fi caverns with custom built pieces and those ideas made there way into this thread. I think that as a stretch goal a sci fi piece doesn't make a lot of sense as it would be of limited utility to many players. I don't think any of us would be opposed to a sci fi line in dwarvenite (at least i hope we wouldn't, if you don't like it, don't pledge... but don't be obstructionist) be that base set or add ons available in a future KS. Not sure that caverns make sense as a place for that add on, but in the end do they really need to make sense? Is there any reason why caverns couldn't have new add on sets that were intended for the Dungeon line? That is a discussion for a whole nother thread.

Getting back to caverns:

While the dark color of the Dwarvenite in the dungeon Game Tiles seams to be quite well received.

I am thinking that it is just to dark for Caverns, I feel that a Limestone color is the way to go.

But I wondered what others think?

Hmmm, hadn't given it a lot of thought. My first impresion is to stay dark; matches existing and it is good to layer paint upwards getting lighter as you go (based on my vast knowledge of painting, never having actually painted anything, but i watched the video... so i'm an expert!). I am imagining very dark walled caverns with highlights of mineral or flowstone deposits, but there are soo many other options...

Wanted to bump this thought to get ideas from others. In the end i think Stefans plan to match existing will win out, but for those who buy unpainted, what are your paint scheme plans? What base color would be the best starting point?

I guess no one cares.

Cause they are all playing with their Game Tiles.

Boo on you, I'm still staring at my phone waiting for it to say Fed-Ex :P

I am really looking forward to this I'm apprently highly unobservant as I has no idea there was a Caverns KS coming up not to mention the sewers one. (As a DM I love sewers...slimes and kobolds and beholders oh my...definately gonna set me up some stormreach sewers)

As for suggestions, well I'm artistically inept the best I can do is some basic spriting so I'd rather just enjoy the genius of others :D (than photoshop it to suit my needs :P)

In nature there are two main types of caverns:

1. Water eroded - usually through limestone, and

2. Lava or magma tubes that will be a dark stone like basalt or andersite.

I assume that "Mallet-head" black is the standard Dwarvenite colour so it may be the case that if you want the lighter limestone you'd buy unpainted and then paint to the desired colour.

I am sure it is one of the issues Stefan et al are pondering as the current KS winds down.

I have to vote for at least some 2x2 pieces. Also some passage pieces that are at different angles than 90 degrees like 30 and 60 so that there is more of a variety there.

My wishlist for cavern:

1) Soon :)
2) Multi-level pieces:
a) stalactite/mite columns: aka artistic support pillars
b) navigable rock piles: aka stepping stone/natural stairs
c) longer ramp type piece (might be pushing the limits of dwarvenite,
but something like a 2x8? sculpted ramp to allow transitioning
from one level to another
d) cavern floor tiles (like the 4x6)
3) Wall with tunnel (sculpted so that a standard humanoid could
crawl squirm through) -- most mini's probably wouldn't fit due
to outstretched weaponry, but should look conceivable for them
to fit through.

If we/they are floating ideas that incorporate possible multi-level content, I'd like to throw out the idea of a waterfall (of sorts).

Think of it as a subterranean stream that pours forth and falls down into a pool. Not a raging waterfall hehe.

I guess I have this idea of tiles that would have water / stream / shore (kind of like some of their current products). And we could position this waterfall from the upper level down onto the lower.

I guess I am envisioning a "playset" (hahaha) that would function as a room that the PCs walk into (using the rest of the cavern pieces) and it opens up into this larger space. Using the pieces, DMs could fashion the room to their size and space liking. One section of the room would be made of pieces that stand higher, to create a higher elevation. The ramps and steps that other spoke of could be used to reach this level. And one feature could be a waterfall that you could use as "dressing" to fill the water below.

Anyway, action takes place in this "multi-level waterfall playset" and then once complete and they make their way out ... you would go back to using the single-level pieces as the action is now back to one dimension.

The non-technical drawback that I see is that the waterfall might be somewhat single-purpose. But maybe it can be rolled into some sort of cavern dressing pack that could be offered as an add-on that provides opportunity to mess around with elevation differences. Dunno, but there's a lot of creative folks out there who could flesh out this idea.

It's a natural waterfall, it's a decorative water feature, it's a water trap, it's a healing spring, it's a poisonous screen in front of a door, it's a naiad's home, it's a spell effect. A stand alone waterfall accessory would be plenty multipurpose.

Re:Caverns Kickstarter - Wish List 1 Year ago
I apologize in advance for the long post, but please bear with me. First, some background thoughts. The beauty of the first kickstarter was that it not only provided a way for those new to DF to more economically put together a dungeon set, but also provided an opportunity for those of us with many dungeon sets to expand on the variety of things that can be done with them. When the kickstarter began, I saw it as an opportunity to get alternate tiles schemes (by buying unpainted sets and adding variety that way, even if just by varying the placement of the off-color stone patterns). But as the addons grew (such as the ever popular free-standing walls), I couldn’t resist the value of the painted sets. So I wound up buying 5 painted sets and a mixture of painted and unpainted addons. Now that they’re finally in my hands (Yes!), I am even more excited about the caverns kickstarter. We already know that, at a minimum, we are going to see a wall piece, a corner piece, a floor piece a straight shoreline/chasm piece, and a rounded shoreline/chasm piece (thanks for that idea jackattack, biowizard!). So since this is a wish list thread, here goes.

- I assume that the corner pieces will resemble the rounded corner pieces in the DT set. I would like a matching floor fragment to fill out the corner to a 2x2 square. Even though they may not perfectly line up, that would give the opportunity to place two corner pieces in an “S” pattern to provide a widening effect or a curved passageway.
- Diagonal walls with matching floor fragments (can use for both caverns and passageways).
- Paints set, please! They will allow me to buy some unpainted sets and vary the paint patterns. Alternate color scheme paints (hellscape, ice) would also be an added bonus.
- If economically feasible, multiple shapes for the wall, floor, and corner pieces.
- Something akin to the Dungeon Dressing addon (flat rocks of various sizes, stalagmites, columns, entrance arches, mushrooms, cavern “stairs”, bone arrangements, skulls, secret door). The flat rocks could be used with the shoreline/chasm pieces to provide raised ledges.
- A bridges/ladders addon set.
- A rubble addon set (cracked floors (thanks again jackattack), rubble piles, blocked passage, etc.).
- A waterfall addon set.
- A floor/platform addon set. The floor pieces should be no larger than 4x4 to minimize any warping. The platforms could be oddly shaped and have rounded corners, allowing for a 4x6 piece to work.
- Transition pieces for cavern-to-passage and cavern-to-dungeon connections.
- A free-standing walls addon set with both curved and straight wall pieces, as well as half-height/length pieces.
- A specialty addon pack akin to the Chamber of Sorrows pack. This could either be a webbed chamber pack or a mining pack (with carts and rails, please). But if it comes down to either one of these options or the waterfall, then I’d rather have the waterfall.
- A large cavern entrance piece.
- A “stairway” addon pack.

The first cavern and cavernous passages sets were beautiful. The more recent sets (Cavernous River and Walls, Hellscape) are both beautiful and brilliant in the way that the conversion pieces allow the transformation of regular pieces into something completely different. I’m full confident that Stefan will come up with something that we all love. Can’t wait!

I also would really like to see transition pieces. Some could be simply a wall with a hole in it: your standard dungeon backs up against a cavern - the hole is the transition.

However I would also like to see wall-transitions that are caverny, that give way to stonework. Like the original builders built the stone wall into an already-existing natural cave wall. This would also include the floor of the "L"-wall shape.

Along those same lines, I'd also like to see some flat floor transitions as well. I wouldn't expect there would need to be a lot of them, since the transitions mainly occur along a line. Just a neat way to smooth out what would otherwise be a hard cut-off between cavern and dungeon flooring.

:)

Great ideas Xav_Dwarf I would like to see some transition pieces also.

Perhaps part of an add-on pack?

I've been debating whether to take the revolving center section out of one of my Secret Door pieces to use as a "broken wall" piece, and as a simple transition to future GT lines.

If that is something DF can do at the factory, they would be able to use an existing mold for a "new" piece.
