For some reason beyond me, I believe most people already think the upcoming Set will be 2*2.

You must have missed this post:

After talking with the factories, it seems that the best way to go will be a 2" x 2" footprint for Cavern Pieces...otherwise we will not get significant cost savings...I WILL be using multiple sculptures for walls and corners so there will be much variety...i will use all my skills and experience, working with the talented Casey (catacombs) to make this an awesome Cavern utilizing the 2" x 2" footprint to it's best advantages, and it does have some advantages over 4' x 4" it can make small configurations and more closely match excisting modules for this reason...thanks for all the great suggestions!

So it looks like it is 2x2 for dwarvenite (possibly some 2x4 stuff?). Perhaps we need another thread for designing the tiles themselves with peoples ideas for how to shape them, and ways to arrange them etc.

My point here was to create a happy playground of the mind for ideas of cavern crawls and what little tidbits would make those crawls come to life. The "Updates on restocking" thread was headed that direction, but that thread is already too long and everytime i see the title it makes me sad. Seeing that someone posted to "wish list" just makes me happy ;)

Once a thread is started it takes a life of its own so i'll follow this wherever it goes. I am just looking for something to do with all of my excitement until the big boxes show up in October!

I had obviously missed Stefan's very informative post on page 8 of this thread: link.

Nevertheless, I would prefer to see free-standing walls over many other possible cavern accessories. Transparent crystals would be nice too!

Assuming GameTile caverns are similar to existing resin...

Stalagmite/stalactite columns.
Stalactites on a clear plastic post and base.
Stalactite arches (full and half height) as doors or spawn points.

While I am personally glad the dwarvenite caverns will be 2x2 so I can mix them in with the game tiles to form half completed rooms or rooms that underground rivers have taken back over. I must say it is a shame to find out that dwarvenite 4x4 tiles would not be very cost effective I was hoping that as the line expanded some special over sized pieces could be done.

I think the hardest part for Stefan and the DF crew with the caverns KS will be at the very begining. With the first KS you only had 4 pieces to start, OK for the world of rectangle dungeon rooms but not workable for natural caverns. I am sure even if the pledge goal had to start at $250,000 to have enough pieces it will blow past that very quickly.

Seems to be much agreement about rolling shores and chasms into the same thing. Something not too different from what I've seen some people do with the existing Cavernous Chasm Set, I would assume. In the event that we do get clear plastic pieces for water/lava/slime, I like the suggestion of having them line up adjacent to the "shores", as apposed to an insert that would have gone over the Dwarvenite.

I'm fine with 2x2 wall pieces if there is enough variety, but I think we'd also need at least one convex wall mixed in there to create smooth layouts. Having some 4x4 floor pieces should be doable, if only to have something akin to the 4x6 floor-pack. Freestanding walls are perhaps even more important for caverns than for dungeon layouts; these could reasonably be longer than 2", since there isn't a floor to deal with.

Since caverns wouldn't have doors, a "cavern mouth" piece could be an effective gameplay equivalent, along with a stalactite arch.

Not sure what I'd want in a "Cavern Dressing" set, beyond what's been mentioned: ladders, bridges, bones, mushrooms, stalagmites, and columns? Transparent crystals may be too far removed from the rest of the production, unless the liquid pieces happen as well.

What I think would be great are "Free standing walls"

Just one look at the quote under my avatar will tell you if I agree with this statement.

Aside from that, I echo what others have said about making sure the Dwarvenite line matched up well with the current resin sets. I would even welcome a few transitional pieces that would better facilitate this endeavor. So in short:

WISH LIST-
Transitional pieces that blend the patterns of both resin and Dwarvenite caverns. :-)

will this include cavern passages, or will those be a different set?

with the 2x2 format, there is a lot we can do. what i would love to see, would be some pieces in the advanced builder style, like the 2x2 dead end, and the alcove.

we need some walls with holes in them- dark holes from which anything could emerge. kobold-sized holes, perhaps.

how about some tribal add-ons? be they kobold or troglodyte, we should have some little extras to make that cave feel occupied. nests full of eggs, piles of bedding, discarded stone weapons and simple pottery.

this may also be a great time to explore the non-stone cavern options as a stretch goal. mine shafts or burrows would be a great addition to the natural caves.

10 resin sets, 5 KS game tile sets

I feel like looking at a map would help draw out the ideas.

For instance, the map for the Caves of Chaos (D&D module B2 for those of us who aren't a million years old....I'm slightly younger :) is easy to download or Google Image. I'd want a set that would easily build many of the rooms/corridors that this classic cave crawl has. Narrow passageways (something that was completely lacking from the first KS, even as an add-on pack) would be great, and yes, more free standing cavern walls would be perfect. Making some low rubble piles (for placing in a room perhaps), stand alone stalagmites, cave-in segments; these would all make great stretch goals or add-on packs.

We have to make sure too much doesn't get stuck in the specialty department piece-wise, and enough pieces are in place to build nice caverns. The dungeon KS really only had 3 main pieces, a 2x2 floor, wall, and corner. I'd propose four for caverns: a 2x2 floor, two different 2x2 walls (one more straight and one more curvy, for natural and chiseled caverns), and a slightly curvy corner that would work for both wall designs.

I'll come back later and add more, it's getting late. :)

I am fine with the 2x2 tiles but I also would like a way to have narrow passage areas, made a bit more naturally than putting a wall against the exposed side.

I do think there will need to be a wider variety of pieces in the initial offering, like 4-6 walls, 2-3 different floors and maybe 3-4 different corners.

Variety is very important, I think.

Proper narrow cavernous passageways

Mushroom forest pieces

Large 'plonk down' rock pieces (some relatively flat and some like huge cavern pillars)so we can break up lines of sight and provide ambush points in large cavern set ups

Some more free standing wall shapes

some watering hole pools

waterfall piece

bigger and more 'fortified' looking cavern to dungeon transition piece

natural surface cave entrance with secrety door at the back, leading into the underdark (Goblin cave style as per the Hobbit).

Dave

I would also like to suggest that the kickstrater pieces need to be compatible with the resin and the deal needs to be arranged with an attractive option for those who already own lots of basic cavern wall/floor/corner pieces and who only want all the extra, new, fancy pieces to complement what we already have.

Are "proper narrow cavernous passageways"...
- any passage with two opposing walls
- a passage with two opposing walls and two complete squares between them
- a passage with two opposing walls and one complete square between them
- or something else entirely?

Similar question for "cave-in segments". Are they...
- dead-end passages with jumbled rocks at the back end
- accessory pieces of jumbled rocks that go on top of floor pieces
- straight and/or corner walls with a slope of tumbled rock taking up the floor
- free standing walls with a triangular (for slope) or trapezoidal (for minis and stacking) profile
- or something else entirely?

I agree about natural columns, stalagmites, and flat rocks (1/2"high?) to break up line of sight. In 1'' and 2" footprints, please -- anything bigger can be made using 2x2 cavern pieces.

No matter how DF decides to do cavernous rivers and lakes for GameTiles (painted, inserts, shoreline edges, whatever), waterfalls can be done as columns and free-standing walls. The columns could be double height for that sense of a long drop, and free-standing gives us broad (straight and curving) sheets of water that might hide enemies or secret tunnels. As accessories, they could be put anywhere in any line DF makes. I'm picturing clear (tinted?) plastic for water, with a white frosted base for froth.
