Caverns Kickstarter - Wish List 1 Year ago
Was going to start this thread a while back as sort of a day dream playground for all of us. I decided it was too soon. Then it got started in another thread, so i guess i was wrong.

With a Caverns Kickstarter proposed for January, i thought it would be fun to start a wish list of what we would like to see for stretch goals and add-ons. There are a lot of creative minds on these forums and i am sure it will be an interesting thought experiment. Plus, you know Stefan is reading these forums so if your idea is good enough to inspire him to sculpt it, it just might end up in production!

So water tiles have already been suggested, but i will mention them again here because they seem to be the obvious choice for an add on set. Probably not translucent, given the limitations of dwarvenite, but certainly painted water would be possible. Possibly an alternate paint scheme for a Kickstarter only stretch goal: Lava pool, Acid pool, Lake of Blood.

Quick list of my random ideas:
Wall with crystal deposits
Pit (perhaps even four 1/4 circle pit edges for a larger hole)
1/2 tiles with rough edges for making chasms, rivers or just changing levels
Ladder (uh oh someone has been here before us...)
Wall with fossil protruding (oh my god, what was that?)
Bridge (again if there are 1/2 tiles we can make rivers and chasms...)
Boulder pile trap (sort of a door hinge thing that releases a few loose rocks - natural looking)

I could keep going, but the main point of starting this thread was to tap into the collective creative juices, so i will leave off here and open the floodgates to your ideas...

I'd like some Kickstarter-only optional paint-schemes.

1. Ice Caverns
2. Hellscape

This way you don't have to take a risk on these paint-schemes and tie up inventory. You just have the factory paint up however many are ordered during kickstarter. Since they will use the same pieces as the regular Caverns kickstarter it's just a paint scheme.

Sculpted shorelines instead of partial and full water tiles. Less material, more versatile, and reduces the number of sets overall. (And that can actually be an impediment for new customers -- it's easy to be overwhelmed by the prospect of having to buy multiple instances of multiple sets to get an environment to work to its fullest potential.)

Or increases the number of accessories that can be matched up to shorelines, in the kickstarter or later.

I STRONGLY support jackattack's view!

You can make shores and chasms with the same pieces! I would suggest that these pieces be 4" long for increased stability of 3D builds. Imagine if there was ever a defect with clear resin poured on PVC/Dwarvenite on a 2 million dollars kickstarter!?!? Cavern Game Tiles supporters would simply have to buy rolls of shiny wrapping paper that are plain red, green, blue or red to assemble their cavern tiles on top of it to respectively have a volcanic, underground rivers, ocean cavern or endless chasm setup... that is for people that do not have a light box of course.

Agreed.

Resin water effects on flexible DT is a bad idea IMHO. However, having shoreline pieces could double for chasm & shore with the right underlay just as Biowizard has said (and demonstrated!)

But PLEASE - make sure the resin line comes back in stock prior to the end of the next KS!!!

I'm not sure if I am reading jackattack's last bit as it was intended, but if the intent is that accessories separate from the chasm/shore line tiles could be made, I like that idea.

It seems like it would give the best of both worlds. The versatility of open pieces that Bio and jack are suggesting (which I do like), and the option to then have accessories that line up to them to give some sort of water/lava/slime/etc. effect if desired. I realize that would depend on what processes are feasible financially and technically, but it would be pretty awesome in my opinion. I would bet many would be willing to do that portion as a paid add-on. If it can't be done, it can't, but I like the idea.

yes - absolutely - that is what i meant with these ideas:

then it can be anything from lightbox, to fabric or even printed paper - plus there could be optional (or third party) 3d pieces made to fit inside: turbulent water, bubbling acid, flowing lava, etc.

We had a whole thread on this a while back and there were a lot of good ideas there. Like the idea of the 4" long sections for stability, but that is an issue for Stefan and Jeff to determine the feasibility in Dwarvenite, also not sure if they want to step outside the 2x2 footprint for consistency sake.

Meanwhile lets toss out some other ideas for random stretch goal pieces to make caverns interesting:

Mushrooms/Myconids
Stalagtites
Petrified adventurer? (perhaps embedded in a stalagtite...)
An adventurers camp - deserted of course
Large skeletal remains

Fungal forest type accents could be cool, perhaps even something similar to the accessory add-on pack. I would think a decomposing or decomposed adventurer with fungi growing on or through would be a pretty cool piece!

Stalagmites we could freely position could be pretty nice as well. Stalactites are harder to do, but in real caves they most often don't reach the floor anyway. Instead they fuse with a twin stalagmite growing up to meet them making a column with a narrowed point in it, which would be much easier to do.

Maybe Stefan could sculpt one to have a sort of "holder" in it, a space that can receive an insert. There could be one insert that comes as part of the initial offering and another one or two could be free stretch goals maybe? The socket could take a crystal, a staked corpse, a fungal growth, or even some sort of cavernous fauna that lies in wait...

My last thought is a couple pieces with strange mystic glyphs etched on them, or maybe some cave art inspired by native american, Hindi, or prehistoric influences?

My only Wishes are:

- That they are 100% compatible with the original Resin Lines. In terms of colour and scale.
- That they look different so that I will buy into these and that it expands the look of my 'larger' caverns without the obvious 'repeat' look you currently get.
- That if they are a 2 x 2 and not a 4 x 4 that the tiles can be used to build some (even if limited) sections of corridor. (IE - Narrow passage sections etc)

I have not even got my game tiles of course, but just talking about Dwarvenite caverns and sculpted shorelines/chasm edges is making wish I could fast forward to having both on my game table.

I like to have my smaller underground rivers come out of a cavern wall or go into a wall so a free standing cavern wall with a low opening could be used for this or a opening for lava to flow through and could also be used with a floor piece as a tight space for the adventures too crawl through or creatures to crawl out of.

Kitenerd, I know you would want us to propose accessories instead of Set designs itself but only 1 month ago Stefan asked for our help in the design of the Game Tiles Cavern Set.

Stefan wrote:
The Design of the new Caverns is still up in the air....we may do 2"x 2" footprint if it turns out it is best or we may do 4"x 4" or both.....

Now is the time for suggestions as sculpting has not started yet!

I am sure there are plenty of great idea's out there....

For some reason beyond me, I believe most people already think the upcoming Set will be 2*2. I for one would prefer a 4*4 foot-print. Cavern walls are so organic that I wonder if they would not look very repetitive when you would put 6 straight walls next to each other in a row. The argument that 2*2 caverns would "fit" better with the 2*2 Game Tiles is false. Present cavern pieces already perfectly fit the resin classical line. Furthermore, if you really want to mix both Sets, you use a transitional piece.

What I think would be great are "Free standing walls": straight 4" long pieces and curved (4*4) walls, as in the River Set. These pieces would allow 3D builds that would create very high walls! It would also allow for creating Cavern "Passages" by putting a straight wall on the same tile as normal 4*4 straight wall piece, but opposite to the actual wall. This approach would be important because with PVC/Dwarvenite, you want to limit the number of different pieces (possibly skipping a Passage Set altogether) while increasing versatility! Finally, free-standing walls would allow builds that would be "free" of the 4*4 footprint since you could put them in any position and angle you would want on top of rock slab pieces.
