TOPIC: What do we WANT to see happen next?

Re:What do we WANT to see happen next? 1 Year, 4 Months ago
I can toss in my opinion on a few of these questions - what would i like to have producted next in dwarvenite and the 40k question.

Dwarvenite:

Another kickstarter either in the falll or next spring for caverns (w advanced notice)

A set of basic passages we can purchase. The avg KS purchase was in the $350 vicinity if my memory is correct. Thats 5 sets plus 2 or 3 addons. The need for additional rooms is less than the need for corridors.

A set of narrow corridors.

Gates or more elaborate double doors. Perhaps even a triple door. Dragons desreve a door of their own, don't they?

A throne room set of scenery. A throne room is integral to a lot of adventures. There does not appear to be one in the available line. Perhaps a giants/gods throne as well? Good for temples... Perhaps these should be under the regular DF line to attract both sets of collectors and lead dwarveniters towards the reg DF line.

A set of medieval rooms could be a future KS.

Down the road an amphitheatre might be possible - something along the lines of a circus maximus. But that might be too single purpose for Dwarvenite - although the lighter weight of the material would be an advantage for the second tier if seating...

Sci-fi rooms questions:

I play 40k. I have an extensive collection of 40k and fantasy armies (some of which I am in the middle of trading for DF).
I own all the GW games. I have even played most of them.

I really like the sci-fi rooms and passages. I was not aware they even existed. Some of the players in my 40k gaming community were aware of DF sci-fi but not too many. I really think awareness is extremely limited among that group of gamers.

Right now the room kit and passages kit are avail, as is the awesome scenery kit ( which is a great deal and could fit into mant genres). The alpha kit (essentially the wicked kit) is out of stock but looks to be soliciting requests for a reprint. The beta kit (curved passages) is absent. I can understand the reluctance of the DF leadership to invest in something that looks to have limited returns. I would purchase more alpha, beta and other additional sets in this line now that i know they exist. Damaged corridors perhaps?

I think the problem lies in the lack of cross polination between the two playing communities. 40k/space hulk players dont play at the same time in the same place w rpg players. Usually rpggers are scheduled on different nights. And we want to be on diff nights. Rpgs are conversational games. Miniature wargames are shoutfests. That being said, as soon as my recent trades and purchases arrive, i will be taking them into my local store for a 3d game of spacehulk or squad level 40k. I wish i could find another alpha and a beta or two but those appear to be quite scarce. Something to search for...

I was at Gencon in '96 and drooled over the initial release of DF during the 3 hrs I had to roam the sellers hall. DF was on my wish list. I was brought into this insanity via the kickstarter. Now that i know about the extensive range stefan & jeff and the rest of the crew have produced, I am on a quest to fill in the gaps that the KS does not fulfill. There are a lot of gaps. I amm starting w den of evil and next up will be the hellsscape caverns. I scored some sci-fi, DOE rooms and some other kits in trades and bought the current DoE availables today.

Next on the project list will be developing portable storage and arranging the KS painting assembly line for next november. - and sending my next purchase order in...

Thanks for reading my ramble. I appreciate the exquisite work stefan does. Happy gaming everyone.

What I want to see is a logical expansion upon the Game Tiles line. This is my first foray into Dwarven Forge (or any gaming terrain), so while I'm very excited and even a bit proud to be a part of this Kickstarter (the fat lot I did), I don't have any nostalgia for the company's previous lines. Keep that in mind when I say this.

Forget resin.

To me, recasting in resin would be a step back. Dwarvenite is cheaper, lighter and more resilient. (I think. Running on little sleep. Memory sketchy.) I'd rather see time and energy put forth into moving forward.

That said, there's a lot of things to consider when deciding the next move. (After a well-deserved rest.) There's now a solid base of dungeon tiles, and the next move will be somehow in relation to it.
  1. Expand the line.
  2. Supplement the line.
  3. Ignore the line.

Exploring these in full...

1. Expand the line. Simply put, make more of what's been made. Narrow passages spring to mind, as well as additional dungeon dressings and sculpts specific to dungeon and castle functions.

The strength of this option is it can garner interest in the original run of Game Tiles from folks who didn't catch the Kickstarter, and there's already a large install base. It adds a good bit of functionality to the existing line.

As far as weaknesses go, it gambles on how much it will draw people in. We have dungeons and castles, now. Needing more of it is simply a matter of getting pieces that serve more specific functions. Though, for that reason, it may serve well as a lighter Kickstarter if that's desired.

2. Supplement the line. That is, make something that works with the existing Game Tiles, but doesn't step on any toes. (Well, not very many.) Caverns, Sewers and Ruins are all good examples. Any one of those could offer an add-on that would allow those tiles to merge with the Dungeon set. You could start out in the sewers or caves and happen upon a subterranean dungeon. Or you could start in a castle, and drop into the sewers. Etc, etc, etc.

Strengths, it's something new to draw in a lot of people. It can work with the existing set, or it can stand alone.

Weaknesses are pretty few. Whereas the dungeon tiles are pretty darn universal to the fantasy setting, I could see every line afterwards becoming increasingly niche. That said, I don't think caverns would falter in the least, and sewers and ruins would certainly be popular enough.

3. Ignore the line. Don't even try to match or include the dungeon tiles. Go sci-fi, or coastal town, or modern urban. Yes, an imaginative GM could use any of these alongside the dungeon tiles, but the effort of DW's part to make the two work together seamlessly isn't required.

As far as strengths, not many. There's no toe-stepping, and you could break into a whole other genre of gamers. (40K was mentioned earlier.)

Weaknesses, though, is a huge leap into a more narrow market. Believe me, a sci-fi set would have me rearranging finances, but I can't say the same for a ton of gamers. Fantasy certainly rules the roost. But, again, if a smaller, more controlled Kickstarter is desired, this could be the choice.

I would hate to see them ignore the resin line, and I have yet to buy any. From what I understand the resin allows for a lot more detail in the casts than the dwarvenite does. I think I mentioned earlier, but the dwarvenite seems like the go to material for all the basic stuff going forward. The resin then is reserved for limited editions, awesome set pieces, or highly detailed add on packs for more specific functions. This makes the most sense to me based on what I have heard and recall, plus it caters wonderfully to everyone.

I can see the appeal of sci-fi sets, but most of my players don't really seem to want sci-fi games. Their tea appears to be modern or fantasy flavored. So while I love the look of the sci-fi stuff, I can't see myself investing in it in the near future. I am looking to pick up more players soon, my current group is no longer entirely local so games are harder to set up.

I do not doubt Jeff and Stefan's ability to discern what the fan base wants, nor their ability to deliver it. I just have to cross my fingers that it matches up with what I would like.

My players rue the day I bought "Dragon Mountain". Ever since they give every creature a bit more respect. You never know when the GM will decide that this group is crafty...

I see the resin lines continuing as deluxe products, so the basic resin dungeon line should continue adding Wicked Addition and Advanced Builder sets.

New Dwarvenite lines ought to be kept fairly basic. One of the complaints I've heard from people who don't buy DF is that the number of sets necessary to complete a line also discourages them -- the price per set multiplied by the number of sets in the product line.

And I would much rather see new designs for Dwarvenite, not just redos of resin lines. It gives everyone something new to buy, and doesn't make the original resin sets redundant.

I have never considered DF because it's way too expensive to buy enough to be practical.

I have always wanted DF, but if I need several hundreds of dollars of cash to build out a 4-hour organized play session, I'm not wealthy enough. Now, with Kickstarter, I have a base to grow my collection $20 at a time :-)

For example, before DD Mini's ... I only buy/paint miniatures for PCs and VIM (very important monsters). Since DDM, I've managed to collect them all through the years. But, much of my collection began with $20 buys at FLGS when I game there. I make it a point to unbox at my table by telling my players what I "throw in today's encounter". These frequent visits eventually added up.

I would love to do that with Dwarvenite Game Tiles now that Plastic Minis are more expensive. I'm running out of things I want to buy at FLGS that are less than $20 and makes that day's game more dramatic.

I must agree with jackattack - new sculpts for Game Tiles keep us long-time collectors buying and reserving the existing resin sculpts as only resin give people collecting Games Tiles a special something to purchase once in awhile...or more often once the addiction really sets in!

I vote for:

-Sewers
-Catacombs 2
-Cavern Chasm expansion Set (as I guess it should be called, more on this very needed set here)
-Wide-angle bigger curved wall classical resin (special individual pieces) to make towers (description here and here)
-Half-floors to match classical diagonal walls
-Half-floors to match classical curved walls

-Kickstarter Game Tiles Passage a few months after Game Tiles are produced and delivered.
-Kickstarter Game Tiles Cavern (including "chasm" pieces) a few months after Game Tiles Passages are produced and delivered.

I guess it would be very wise to have other kickstarters, but separated by many many months. It would allow some slack on the budget of customers, it would increase even more the number of DF fans and it would max out the very concept of mass production that allows the cheap production of Game Tiles.

Rough Edge pieces - If you have embankment edges, then an old battle mat or even a yard of fabric in the right color can become what lies past the edge... One set of these edges and you could have a subterranean river, or the banks of a lake of fire or whatever. These would be very versatile and easy to adapt to whatever you need

I didn't do a very good job of explaining this, but i found a whole thread on this with images elsewhere on the site:

Very useful, very versatile, very easy to make and even... very cheap! This tops my list of dwarvenite sets i'd like to see

Hmmm I'd like to see more treasure/dressing sets.

I have some old dwarven forge vase/sack individual items that are invaluable to my collection yet they are impossible to find now?

I am happy that DF included barrels, curved corners, and diagonal walls in this campaign. Those pieces really expand the look and feel of what you can accomplish with the traditional sets.

We need more crates, jars. pots and vases, urns, sculpted pedestals to put urns, pots, or treasure on, levers, dais, basic altar, evil altar, stone altar (imagine having your player manually push the altar to the side to find the hidden stair tile under it? Awesome), well tiles, but like an official well not a pool, a fountain tile, statues (heroes, animals, broken statues, men, women, cloaked) Who hasn't wanted to push a statue after playing zelda?, If you made 2x2 tiles, one with two dungeon base and 2 water base and one with 3 dungeon base and 1 curved water corner, you could make sewers and small water ways within castles or man made sewer systems. With TWO tiles! Then you could made a little stone bridge that could connect both sides of the water way. Again I'm thinking old school Zelda in mind as inspiration.

Put me down for a Lake expantion set, another river, and another Lake. And I cant wait for Catacombs II.
I would buy some more Open Water tiles too, but I only need like five.
A set of Cavern Columns would be welcome as well.
