I'm not a backer of this, but I thought it looked interesting (I might pick up the PDF version). It just popped up for me today. A new dungeon crawl RPG from the makers of Mouse Guard. I thought some of you may be interested:

These guys did 'Burning Wheel' which is an amazing system.
$15 is very tempting.

Not familiar with their stuff, but it sounds interesting.....

Is it a good game for straight up miniatures style gaming with DF? Seems a bit more of an advanced game, which I'm cool with....

This looks like a pretty cool game but probably not a great game to play with dungeon tiles and miniatures. According to their FAQ:

Do You Need Miniatures, Maps or Tiles to Play Torchbearer?

You do not need miniatures, hex maps, tiles or terrain to play Torchbearer? Can you use them? Not really. They sort of get in the way. We designed the game so it can be played using nothing more than the character sheets, dice and pencils. Action cards and some GM sheets make it go more smoothly, but they're not required.

Most role play systems will say that they do not 'need' 3D terrain or figures etc.
That is because they do not!

When I started playing AD&D in the 1980s we all used graph paper and pencils. We had no figures or any type of terrain and the DM had the 'eraser'. That is all any game system needs.
Any system launched that say it 'requires' these add-ons makes that game prohibitively expensive. So they all launch not 'requiring' them.

If you like to use figures. You are likely to enjoy the enhancements that 3D terrain & 3D Dungeon Tiles bring.
Over the years we moved quickly on from using just pencil marks on paper to painting our own figures and using Dry Wipe pens on gridded mats. We dabbled with using pre-printed cardboard floor plans. (these are really not worth the effort IMHO) Now it is DF all the way!

Can you use them?
Most don't say 'not really' and they slow you down.
YMMV but I prefer a system that improves with the use of miniatures and terrain not the opposite.

As this Dragon King is not a complete experience nor would I want my gaming system
(Not to say its not complete into itself)

Dandare I agree with everything you said about most games in general, but the creators of this particular game seem to strongly imply that in this specific case that miniatures and 3D terrain actually detract from game play rather than enhance it.

I draw my conclusion based on them saying in their FAQ that you can't really use maps, miniatures, or game tiles and that they sort of get in the way.

I am unclear what the need for this game is. If I want to play a game with the old D&D feel, I will play the old D&D. My books didn't stop working the day they put out the next edition.

As far as I can see there is no reason to buy this game just for a style of play. If there is, what did I miss?

A quick re-watch of the video and it does all indeed look 'lack-lustre'.
(I do like the 'assist' idea where people pass extra D6 into their party cohorts hands)

However as you can see in the image - the DM does have a 'Map' and uses a pad and pencil. So there is a real-world to be described here and one that the player need to explore.
Seems 'restrictive' to the players for any DM to sit there and say: "Just sit and listen - You may not draw maps or use figures on my table."

If the Burning Wheel chaps think they can claim to be making a 'Homage to D&D' and try to exclude this element of fun for the players, the act of seeing & positioning a figure representing ones own character in relation to what is going on around you... Then this KS is not for me! (I have now retracted my $15 pledge that I made in haste)

I'll buy a copy just for the hell of it but it's doubtful it's a system that needs DF. On a related note, I recently picked up Dungeon World and I have to say I'm really digging it. It's a rules light throw back D&D clone. Just enough cool powers without boggging you down with rules.
