Game Tile Question Before Kickstarter Ends... 11 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Can anyone speak to the difference in quality/design of the Game Tiles vs. the original product? After decades away from D&D I've gotten back into it. DF came on my radar pretty quick but I feel late to the party. I just got an account at DF today, 1-day before the kickstarter ends! I'd just like a little information about the differences, if in fact they're significant or not, so my rash decision to purchase a couple sets might be just a wee bit more informed.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Others will have to answer for the older products vs. now. All I can say is a new owner (addict) is that you will never find another way to get into DF at this low price per piece. Buy into it if you can afford to.

The "older" existing product is gorgeous, cast out of resin, heavier, and more expensive.

You will cherish it, and probably keep it in the original packaging.

Your players will be in awe...

The "new" kickstarter line is gorgeous, molded out of Dwarvenite, lighter, and less expensive.

You'll throw it in a shoe box, and take it to cons.

Your players will love it.

I agree with the previous poster - if you're just getting into it and can afford the kickstarter, I don't think you could go wrong.

... especially if you get the pre-painted sets.

Unfortunately, none of us have seen the new Game Tiles in person, so we can't judge any better than you can by comparing photos of new Game Tiles to photos of Classic Dungeon sets on the Products page. In addition, many of the Game Tiles pictured are actually pre-production mock-ups (stretch goal pieces that were designed on the fly when Jeff and Stefan realized that $50K was a ridiculously low number).

What I can tell you is that photos of DF products rarely do them justice -- as great as they look in pictures, they are so much better in person.

I can also tell you that Stefan is an artist. That's not his job, it's his personality. He is compelled to create beautiful things, and that has guided every DF product that has ever been released.

Finally, DF has spent 17 years fighting to keep doing what they do. Of changing their business model from store supplier to online distributor to keep their prices low. Of keeping their prices frozen for nearly a decade when the market might have borne more. Of customer service that eats into their profit margins. Jeff and Stefan have never compromised on the quality of their products or their business ethic, and they have more than earned my trust that Game Tiles will be another high quality product that meets their own exacting standards. Game Tiles may be less expensive than classic resin sets, but I cannot believe that they will be cheaper.

Guys, thank you so much for the speedy response. It did not occur to me that no one has seen these yet, but of course they haven't! When I started browsing DF this past couple weeks I decided to slowly, over time, get a set or two. Then last night I discovered the kickstarter and realized I've entered the picture at the 11th hour. Your responses do help me play catchup.

At this juncture 3D environment stuff would be mostly for collection purposes but as my boys get older I'm seeing strong possibilities for use. Anyway, the feedback helps. I've got a few hours to make up my mind about whether or not to go with the kickstarter offer (which looks amazing!) or go with the old "buy the original tiles slowly over time" approach.

PS: I found this video very helpful in terms of understanding what you get for various pledges:

PPS: I love the passion Stefen shows in the kickstarter video. It's always a great pleasure to watch people discuss and work on things they're passionate about.

Another thing to bear in mind, I beloeve Stefan had mentioned (and naturally I forgot where) that the metal molds used to make the Dwarvenite pieces can only maintain a certain level of detail when compared to the resin pieces. What I've taken away from that is that most impressive DF pieces (think the cavern line's stalagmites, hellscapes lava plumes and gate, for example) just aren't possible with Dwarvenite.
