Rolling Ball Trap - potential bonus 4 Months ago
I have a bad cold - i wake up in the middle of the night having fever dreams that for some reason involve lots of caverns...

As i was becoming conscious this morning it occurred to me that there was talk about a wall with a round opening in it that small creatures (or burrowing worms or what not) could enter through. Then i was thinking about the rolling ball trap, Indiana Jones and the game Mousetrap. It occurred to me that you could make a setup where the party had to enter the deepest caverns THROUGH the small hole, adventure on, trigger the trap and here comes the giant ball! Reflex saves, no problem we are all experienced adventurers. Whew!, that was close, lets get out of here... Except when they get back to the small hole there is a giant ball of stone wedged into it! Uh oh, now how do we get out?

Just throwing it out there. If it is not too late, Stefan should make sure the size of the ball and the size of the hole work together

that is a nice and clever trap. even funnier if you make it an easy save so the players think it is lame. then "oh heck how do we get out?"

If you have a maze of tunnels, put the stone in perpetual motion so that it does laps around a set course in the maze.

Your party may think they are setting off multiple traps.

Or they may try to mark the stone as it passes, to see if it is the same one passing again and again.

That is an excellent and devious idea.
We need a 'beast' or 'bolt hole' / semi concealed entrance.. This gets my vote.

So that it is general purpose - one of the many 'loose' free standing rock piles that were so great in the original DF resin sets could come into play and be used to block this 'opening' when not being used as an entrance etc..
(Hopefully Stefan has something similar lined up for this series as well - A few well shaped rock piles / mounds are so versatile at blocking / narrowing / making a plinth / staircase / something to stand on when the waters flood in...)

I once had a dungeon game where the boulder that kept trying to roll them over was an imprisoned sentient earth elemental. They discovered this after discovering it was the same boulder every time and then discovering that it had no set pattern and pursued them purposefully.

Eventually, they even talked it over several hours of avoiding it and learned about it. It never stopped trying to flatten them, but became quite affable about it and even let slip some of what it had learned from its centuries imprisonment in a very clever trap...

That is just beautiful. I'm imagining one of the "false alarms" from Labyrinth as a rolling stone.

And I just had an idea...

Whether the ball actually fits through or not, the lizard face opening we've seen previewed should be able to spit it out like a cannonball!
