Winding Cavern Passages Solution! 9 Months ago
I'm loving the Caverns Kickstarter so far and I can't wait to see what comes next, but one minor thing that's bothered me is the very cool but rectilinear passageways. Dwarves may build square and true, but nature abhors straight lines! I've happened upon an easy solution though... slice them curves in half!

Wedges! Corners A and B could be chopped into wedges, and you could use them at the beginning (or end or middle) of a passageway to create a 45 degree angle. Or insert a few in different directions throughout the passage to create a snaking tunnel, where your PC victims can't quite see what lurks around the bend...

The nice thing about this is the curves are a constant radius, so you don't have to worry about the width of the hallway changing like with the diagonal walls in the dungeon set.

Now, I could definitely do this myself with a bandsaw but it would require some cleanup and resculpting, and would probably result in a little General Funkiness. Stefan, please don't make me carve up your gorgeous cavern tile sculpts! Work up some proper little wedge curves for us.

That is a very interesting suggestion!

P.S.: I know I am "Not The Stefan You Are Looking For"!

I can predict Setfan's response... he is hesitant to do anything that gets people "off the 2x2 grid"

That said this idea has merit. I know i like to use tthe diagonal walls in the GT set to create rooms that are on the 45 degree axis. Makes the room seem special somehow, like a throne room or a private chamber

Here's a quick and (very, very) dirty example tossed together with map maker images chopped and assembled in Photoshop. You could get some great curvy, organic shapes with this, and there's no reason they all have to be 45 degrees either.

As I said there is always Mr. Bandsaw of course, but I trust Stefan could sculpt us a very useful piece which would make this look goooood...

...Excellent example where 'Less is More'.

Love it!

The passage piece we have in the Game Tiles Cavern Set is part of the Narrow Passage Set. My guess is there will be an upcoming Cavern Passage Set kickstarter, just like there will also be an upcoming Game Tiles passage Set. It would make much more sense in my opinion to create a 45 degrees piece as part of a full 2" wide passage Set that is not respecting modularity. Narrow passage pieces are respecting modularity and I think it should be kept this way.

Or, ya know... I suppose you could just totally already be sculpting these nifty little pieces at the exact same time I posted asking for them. That'll work!

Thanks, Stefan! I SWEAR I don't have a secret webcam hidden in your studio.

cletusk 82,

My thoughts upon a Game Tiles Passage Set can be found here.

No info that I know of has been revealed by Stefan about Cavern (not narrow) passage pieces.
