TOPIC: Double Doors?
#60294
Re:Double Doors? 10 Months ago
LordDust,

Yes, I've been checking out some interesting medieval hinge designs, sculpted knockers, etc. Looking forward to putting together something suitable for a grand entrance.

Jchunick,

Thanks! ...An artist by trade? Well-- I like to think of myself as a Renaissance man. My primary work for a long time has been as a custom builder, doing fine carpentry and tile work. My secondary job has been freelance writing & editing (I write for Magic: The Gathering, and also do a lot of work with Japanese literature adapted into English-- mostly mysteries and speculative fiction). For a few years now I've also had a shop on Shapeways.com selling original jewelry and unique dice (this is the place to go if you need a d18 or a d48!); you can see that here:

www.shapeways.com/shops/CornerstoneGaming

...But for several years now I've been increasingly interested in miniature sculpture, and just this week I officially launched Griffin Tamer Studio. The series of doors and dungeon entrances you've been seeing are my first official project. My goal is to create high quality terrain and miniatures to complement DF, Hirst Arts and the others on the market; I think there are certain sorts of terrain elements that are under-represented right now, probably because they are not well suited for production using the dominant methods, but which I can create quite effectively in a home workshop. At least, that's the plan! Stay tuned!

One thing you can try using for the door handles/knokers are jump rings. In fact, I just bought a set of 1500+ assorted sizes of antique brass jump rings from here (along with silver and gold). They're cheap and have a wide range of uses. As well, you could try some fancier twisted jump rings such as these there are all sorts of metal finishes that take a quick search to find such as copper, brass, antique brass, silver, antique silver, etc. With those you'd just need to find a plate and a small tube such as here (copper tube spacers).

These antique bronze lion head knockers would work nicely on the giant doors, I think.

Here's a pic, because you really have to see them:

They're supposed to be earrings (which is goofy), but it's easy enough to cut the points off with a dremel.

Jchunick,

Thanks for the idea; though those would be too large for the medium sized doors something like that might indeed work for giant doors. I'll stick with sculpting everything out of clay for my initial models, since I'm going to be selling these as original designs, but when it comes to mods such things could come in real handy. Who'd of thunk they'd make lion door knocker earrings?

I've actually already sculpted some tiny lion pull rings for one version of the small doors, and have been working on doing some interesting hinges on 'em. I'll probably wait till I've got prototype casts done before I post pics because they look a little odd right now with stuff in multiple colors, but anyhow they're coming along.

Rydendragons,

Thanks! Yeah, the dice are fun. I actually have an original game system where attributes are expressed as dice, e.g. a character's strength might be d12 or d16 (which is the die he'd use to make a check against a given challenge set at a particular numeric value), so having a full graduated set of dice is handy, as well as just satisfying for a confirmed dice nut. And the big d48's and d60's can be great for, say, when someone does something really stupid and triggers an avalanche... maybe they get out pretty much unscathed... maybe they're on the bottom of that really big heap of boulders...

The dice begin their life as CAD files and are then produced in various materials by Shapeways 3D printing tech. I've made them in polymer, alumide, 'sandstone,' and my favorite, bronzed steel. Very cool.

GriffinTamer, any idea of how long you think it will take to create the doors and them being ready for sale? I'm looking forward to them!

Arbados,

Well-- I expect to have the sculpting on the smaller doors done & the master molds made within the next couple days. But I'll also be making at least a couple more of the larger dungeon entrances, as well as some other interesting goodies so I'll have plenty of stuff for the stretch goals, before I'm ready to launch my Kickstarter. Don't quote me on it, but with luck I'll have all this squared away within the next month or so and then I can go live.

The good news is that once things are up and rolling, since I'll be making the pieces myself here in my home workshop, I should be able to produce them and send them out relatively quickly. I'm really motivated to make this happen. Thanks for the enthusiasm!

This may be obvious, but please try not to time it at the same time as the Caverns KS.

AnimeSensei - Yes. I wish I knew when DF is going to run theirs! I expect there will be an announcement soon, given the cool teaser photos that have been appearing!

Meanwhile I've made progress on my medium double doors. I cast the first batch yesterday; here are some photos:

So, amidst finishing up painting my Game Tiles sets, I found the time to also paint a few sets of my medium double doors. Here's how they look:
